Physical Description: Riagan is average height for his age. He has short, black hair and violet-blue eyes. His skin is a pale olivey tone with very faint brown freckles if he stays out too long in the sun.
Personality: Riagan gives off the air of being a problem child, without actually being one. He has a devilish streak that likes to tease. He's not outwardly sweet or sympathetic, though he has a persuasive, charming demeanor around his friends that had a lot of teachers and creche-workers pegging him as the ringleader of certain ill-begotten plots. He has been known to bend rules here and there, to whatever extent he thinks he can get away with, but when caught he will confess his crimes, taking full responsibility (regardless of who else was invovled). The one thing he hates is to be accused of something he didn't do, and not to have people believe him.
He likes to mess around with his friends, but is understanding and obliging with (certain) authority figures. He was always the first in the creche to say 'alright, let's clean this up guys!' or the first to know when a joke has gone too far. In fact, Riagan can quite considerate, he just doesn't like to make a big show of it. As kids, he would often look out for his younger half-sister, and other younger kids as well, but would play it off as though it were something else. He gets a little shy about acts of altruism, trying to make it seem like he was after something else instead. Or, ideally, to have no one notice at all. Still, he has a soft spot for little kids and does not abide by anyone who would push them around. When it gets down to it, he can be surprisingly empathetic and usually knows the right thing to say or do to bring someone out of a mood.
He has a personality that finds it difficult to say no, whether to his parents, his friends, or a total stranger.. he always strives to be accommodating, and will never not help someone if he's asked. However, because of his indulgent nature, he tends to bottle up frustrations until they make him snap, going from kind and cooperative to furious in no seconds flat. Riagan can be short tempered when annoyed, but has a begrudging patience when it comes to his close friends and siblings that quickly cools his hot temper and has him taking a deep breath before going any further.
Despite his outwardly cheerful nature, Riagan might be a introvert at heart. While he enjoys company, he finds being around people to be draining and difficult. And when he finds himself close to losing his patience, he will want to withdraw somewhere where he can be alone. Or with a single, close friend. He can quickly become snapish, solitary, and withdrawn when overwhelmed, something his foster parents were quick to pick up on, but it's not for lack of love. He just needs some time alone to recharge and he'll soon want to be spending time with people again.
Riagan has a bold, somewhat combative personality when it comes to injustices or, particularly, to untruths. He can't stand it when someone gets away with lying about something. And he will not let things go when he knows he is in the right. Even when it relates to someone else, and they themselves no longer care, he hates it when someone is blamed for something they didn't do. Nothing gets under his skin more than things seeming unfair or biased. Unsurprisingly, he's not a fan of the unequal treatment of different colors in the Weyr. Though naive in his ideals, he is down-to-earth about the ways to enact them. He loves the secret politics of the weyr, the intricacies of gossip and influence. And though he holds himself to a higher standard, he doesn't have a problem with exploiting and manipulating others' dishonesty to suit his ends.
History: Like most weyrbrats, Riagan was raised in the creche until he was of an age to be fostered. Though he was intiially known as a quiet and careful child, if a little moody, he had a couple of bad early experiences with foster parents that he found difficult to get along with, sending him back to the creche several times, and getting him labeled as a problem child before he was even 6 turns old.
He had a particularly bad experience with one set of foster parents and their two natural-born children. The brothers would get up to all kinds of trouble, but would always blame it on one of their foster siblings instead. And the parents always believed them. Even when it wasn't the one being targeted, Riagan couldn't stand this, and it eventually led to a violent confrontation between him and his much older foster brother that had him in the infirmary for several weeks. He had a bad habit of starting fights with people he had no hope of beating, as age, size, rank, and strength never factored into his decision to stand up to someone when he thought they were in the wrong. Once he was taken in by his current foster parents, however, he started to show a different side of himself. He stopped getting into trouble so much, and now that he had people who actually believed him, he didn't feel the need to fight over every little thing.
Though hoping to be a dragonrider like his parents, like many weyrbrat, he took up a side craft to fill the time until he could Impress. For him, he'd always been fascinated by glass blowing and was able to find someone who was willing to teach him while he continued to live at the Weyr. He keeps up with his craft when he can, but it is still secondary to him compared to being a Candidate.
The fact that his mother was a blue rider gave him a different view of the Weyr. There was nothing wrong with Naeth for picking a girl, in his opinion. Or with his father for being chosen by a green. Because of his parents, Riagan has a soft spot for chromatic colors. He doesn't aspire to brown or bronze like most boys his age, but if he did impress one, he wants to use that influence to try and change the opinions of people at the Weyr. Its easy for people to write off blues and greens as griping about the situation. If things are going to change, it needs to come from the top.
