Figuring out who your Mwezi'Johari lion is related to can be a daunting task full of confusion and missed connections. This thread is here to help.
How to Use This Thread
Use Ctrl+F to find your lion and/or their parent(s) Trace their line back through direct antecedents, highlighted in bold and colorful font. Make sure you check both sides of your lion's family! Compare direct lines to your potential mate:
Simple Example: Shangyue x Kamia
Kamia's Pride Lineage [from Mwezi Line] Mwezi'mtoto > Kisura > Sarhna > Kamia [from Royal Line] Nesibindi > Unyezi > Bayana (married Sarhna) > Kamia (adopted)
Shangyue's Pride Lineage [from Royal Line] Nesibindi > Khathelela > Selene > Shangyue
Interpretation Shangyue and Kamia are not related genetically but by adoption: they are both three steps down from common ancestor Nesibindi. This makes them second cousins, which would be permissible in the shop even if it were genetic. Since both parties are known to be part of this family, the match may have been given some awkward glances if not for the fact that Shangyue was King, didn't care, and didn't give Kamia a choice.
Complex Example: Rashne x Tama
Rashne's Pride Lineage [from Royal Line] Nesibindi > Lela > Selene > Shangyue > Rashne
Tama's Pride Lineage [from Royal Line] Nesibindi > Unyezi > Alcmene > Aapep > Vesper > Hodari > Tama
Interpretation Rashne is Tama's Grandfather's third cousin, making them third cousins, twice removed.
Final Interpretation Rashne's mother and Tama's father are, by chance, first cousins. This makes Rashne and Tama second cousins on this external line. They are doubly related, but still within the shop rules on both sides. ICly, nobody knows the genetic connection between Azhar'Hilel and Parisa so this would not be a factor in whether or not they would be viewed strangely. On the Royal side, Shangyue created a rift in the Royal Family that makes the perceived connection between his offspring and the others somewhat hazy. Older relatives who know the family line well (i.e. Unyezi) may find it funny, but chances are slim anybody would notice or care that they're related.
Are We Second Cousins?
Fact: Cousins are confusing. So let's do this with examples.
Set 1: Mwezi'mtoto > Kivuli Mwezi > Yareha Afaer > Avahk > Boinedal Set 2: Mwezi'mtoto > Fafnir > Aapep > Vesper > Kimondo
- Mwezi'mtoto is the direct antecedent of both Kivuli Mwezi and Fafnir, this makes them brothers. - Yareha Afaer and Aapep are both two steps from Mwezi'mtoto, the children of brothers: this makes them first cousins - Avahk and Vesper are both three steps from Mwezi'mtoto, the children of first cousins: this makes them second cousins - Boinedal and Kimondo are both four steps from Mwezi'mtoto, the children of second cousins: this makes them third cousins
And so on! That's the easy part. Then this happens:
- Aapep is the first cousin of Boinedal's grandfather. Boinedal is two steps down from Aapep's first cousin. This makes them first cousins, twice removed. - Vesper is the second cousin of Boinedal's father. Boinedal is one step down from Vesper's second cousin. This makes them second cousins, once removed.
It's easy when you get the hang of it. Using Google to find a cousin chart is also extremely helpful!

Notes
Any lions listed in silver .. were not born in the pride and did not come to the pride as cubs, though they may have become members later. Descendants of lions born outside the pride are not being tracked, unless their descendants are born in the pride.
Adopted by vs. Adoptive Parent .. if there is a note by a litter saying they were adopted by someone, sole custody fully transferred to that someone. If an adoptive father is listed with the biological parents, he married the mother* and raised her cubs as his own. Stepparents, who marry a biological or adoptive parent after cubs are grown, are not listed this way and are not considered related to those cubs.
* This is the most common situation but is not the only one. In the case of Liuhe's adopted children, he married the father and not the unlisted mother.
Not all lions listed as rogues are actually rogues .. it's just the easiest way to denote an outsider!

Other Notes:
Kiwanja and his family were well-known for being strong and dependable guards. This tradition continued with Thoth, Otieno and Aureole's sons but now primarily rests on the shoulders of Thoth's adopted children and their descendants. Because Sini'ngozi, Thoth and Aureole all married children of Nesibindi & Khalela, inbreeding is already likely to be easily avoided. This really is just for the sake of remembering these old blood families.

Connections to the Ukuucha'Wafalme
About: By chance, descendants from a single family from the now disbanded Ukuucha'wafalme have crossed paths in the Mwezi'Johari. This now makes a section of the pride second cousins, though none would be aware of that fact. This list is here to help players who would like to avoid any degree of inbreeding! Color:Deep Pink
Parisa & Fasrin are first cousins of Azhar'Hilel. This makes Hodari's children second cousins to the children of both Parisa & Fasrin.
Since all three sets of offspring are currently related in others way, unknowing inbreeding is unlikely.
