Neema was beside herself. The fact that Yareha Afaer had returned to the pride was unavoidable, especially since he'd brought a mate back with him and she had barely gone to sleep before waking up in the High Class! Normally, Neema was an easy-going lioness who was friendly with everybody but this wasn't a situation she immediately knew how to react to. If her mother was here, she would be beside herself too. And that, before everything else, was the primary contributing factor to how Neema was handling this information.

She hadn't even spoken to her uncle since his return and she'd made a point of avoiding him during the High Class "meet and greet" for his mate. How he'd ever found someone so beloved by the Great Lion was beyond her!

Pacing in the dark and occasionally muttering to herself, Neema felt the distance between herself and her mother all the more keenly tonight. Lailah was fine with everything that was happening, Iah and Lelijaali were as indifferent as ever.. but was there something Aysu would have said or done if she was here now? Was she the only one thinking about that?

"Uh...Neema?" a timid voice asked as its owner came near. The monochrome male did wasn't small, and looked somewhat ridiculous when he curled in upon himself. However, no one in the Mwezi'Johari saw Yksivarinen as any kind of threat, despite his rank under Shangyue.

Of course, the other reason for the male's timidity was the fact of Neema's very obvious anger. She never seemed to be angry with him (something that continually amazed 'Varinen), but sometimes she did get very angry.

"Is something wrong?" he pressed her, anxious as she muttered indistinct words to herself.

With a yelp, Neema nearly jumped out of her fur when 'Varinen approached, seemingly out of nowhere, and asked her if something was wrong. She stared at him for a long moment, realizing how out of character she must seem to him now.. he hadn't been so much a part of her life the last time she felt so conflicted and upset. It wouldn't have made sense to let him in then, but now.. it didn't feel right to cover it up and tell him everything was fine.

But.. that didn't mean it was easy to figure out where to start. He was a slave, and had been here his entire life, he had to know the story of Yareha Afaer and the time he almost killed a slave.. if only because Mazin's refusal to fight back was either an example of proper slave behaviour.. or dangerous slave behaviour. She'd be surprised if Shangyue hadn't used the story as an example of what was wrong with slavery in the pride at the time when he rallied the Low Class to his cause.

"My uncle Yareha is back," she said, starting with the simple truth.

"Yareha..." The male trailed off as he tried to remember why the name sounded so familiar. He couldn't put much of a face to it, nor had he heard it anytime recently. But he did know it...

Yksivarinen fiddled with his amulet, the one he still wore despite the looks people gave him for it. Then he remembered something that had happened long ago.

"Is he the one who nearly killed Mazin?" the monochrome lion asked at last, face screwed up with the effort of dredging up the old memory.

Neema waited patiently as 'Varinen worked out where he had heard the name before, nodding when he came to the correct conclusion. It wasn't something one should want to be known for, and she understood that there were a handful of lions here known for killing others by now.. but this attack had been personal. And because of Aysu's involvement, Neema had an especially bad view of the whole thing.

"I know it's not the worst thing a pride member has done, and after everything Shangyue did and so many others had to do to either keep him happy or fight back against him.."

She trailed off for a moment before coming back, shaking her head.

"He brought a mate back with him, and she became a part of the High Class," she explained, "Making him part of the High Class. I don't know how far that information has spread yet but it's kind of hard not to notice when you're one of the ones invited to the party because they're supposed to know everybody in their class.."

It was a good thing that Neema talked so much, because otherwise Yksivarinen would have been stuck trying to figure out why she was so upset about Yareha when she wasn't Mazin or anyone close to him. But the whole joining high class thing, that made more sense. If Neema hated Yareha before, she was truly pissed off now that he was in her class.

"Oh," was the most intelligent response the male could offer. Then he thought about how very long ago that whole thing had been.

"It's been years though...maybe it's time to forgive and forget?" 'Varinen offered tentatively.

Neema visibly drooped at the idea of forgiving Yareha and forgetting the whole thing had ever happened. That was the obvious solution, it should have been that easy.. it wasn't like that wasn't the approach of most of the pride, including her own sister. But the lingering loyalty to her mother, knowing she might be the only one left who still thought about her.. that made it harder. And that was hard to explain to anybody.

"I- I can't help but wonder if that's what my mother would want," she said after a long pause, immediately feeling silly once the words were out there. Her mother didn't have the kindest of reputations just because she tried to get involved in so much, but she was truly a good lioness. It was wrong for her to assume that Aysu would be unwilling to forgive her brother if he had truly grown up and settled down.

"I know that sounds wrong."

The male watched Neema, feeling helpless as she went from enraged to despondent. He didn't like seeing the lioness this way, but wasn't sure what to do. He'd only said the logical thing about Yareha after all, but now Neema was worried about what her mother would think.

But...it wasn't as if Aysu was dead. Well, she might be now, and they simply didn't know. But they could find out!

"Well...we could ask her! You could go find her...or we could send a bird...and then you wouldn't have to wonder!" Yksivarinen presented his solution with all the excitement of a cub finding a frog for the very first time.

We could ask her.

It was a simple idea with a very complicated, uncertain process to go through if you actually wanted to do it. She'd have no idea how to track her mother down now, even with Uthuli and his daughters with her.. and that was assuming they had all stayed together. A bird could cover more ground but was less likely to recognize their targets, and there was still a chance they'd never be found. No, the moment her mother left, she had known the only way they'd meet again was if Aysu came back on her own.. but staring at 'Varinen's excited face, it was hard to turn him down flat.

Slowly, she began to smile again and out came the first thing she could think of.

"Will you marry me?"

'Varinen was eagerly awaiting Neema's response, excitement in his eyes that grew as a smile crossed her face. He knew it! He'd found the very best way to help the lioness out and she was going to accept his solution and everything would be wonderful...!

...and then the words came out of her mouth.

The male was smiling eagerly, mouth open to encourage her in his plan and then the sense of the words penetrated. His wide smile became rounded in shock and Yksivarinen stared at Neema.

"Wait...what?" That...couldn't be right. Not just because it was the lion who was supposed to ask the lioness, but because who really wanted to marry him? Oh yes, he tried very hard at everything he did, but he wasn't very good at any of it. At all. Oh, and that was on top of being Low Class. And Neema? Neema was High Class. Which made it so much more than marriage. She was crazy, right?

Neema was almost as surprised as him when those were the words that came tumbling out of her mouth, if it weren't for all the fur she'd be a bright shade of red.. it was a terrible time for this conversation, it didn't make sense at all considering where they had started and what her mood had been even just seconds before. But looking at the bigger picture, at everything outside of this particular moment and this particular conversation, it all made sense to her and she meant it.

And she wasn't surprised by his reaction.

"Yksivarinen," she said, "I love you."

PostPosted: Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:34 pm
He could only gape and stare at her. Even though she said the words - the really important words that any and every romance that he'd ever heard tell of had included - Yksivarinen had never ever thought they'd be directed at him. Then he realized something important. So very important that he had to do something he'd never thought he'd do.

"I love you too, Neema," the male whispered, as if he feared that speaking up would cause the lioness to turn away from him. He still had a hard time believing that any of this was real and that it was truly happening.

It was a struggle, to try and stay rational against the flood of emotions that threatened to swamp him.

The lioness beamed when he replied. All the convincing self-confidence in the world wasn't enough when this was the sentiment you hoped would be returned, no matter what it was a hundred times more meaningful to hear it from the one you loved. It was a reassuring, wonderful feeling, but it still left one question unanswered.

"So.. will you marry me?" Neema repeated, taking a step closer.

"If...if you really want me to," 'Varinen stumbled over the words, still having a hard time believing that any of this could actually be real and happening. She was close to him, closer than she'd ever been before. They'd never touched, you didn't do that with people who weren't family, and she was close enough for him to feel her breath against his fur.

His answer was less than ideal but no more or less than she ought to have expected from him. The full moon had just passed, there was time for him to become comfortable with the idea and get a more firm, confident yes.. but, if it took more than one full moon, she could wait. Kimondo was a much younger cousin but she was also a friend, Neema would not dare introduce her husband-to-be for the Queen's blessing unless he could actually say it.

But for now, it would do.

So Neema closed the gap between them and nuzzled into his mane, forgetting about her worries about her uncle, her mother and her pride, content to stay right there.
