It was to a soft breeze gently rolling over her bare skin that Joshala woke. It felt exquisite after the suffocating humidity of the night before. Her face had been dripping with sweat after just a short walk outdoors. Drat that canine of hers, needing to relieve himself in the middle of the night like that. But there was little choice. She reached down to her knees, patting the mattress until she found the beast’s head, and have him an affectionate scratch.

Not that the Candidate barracks were any better than outside, really. The building was built out in the bowl, not carved into the stone of the caldera. Even with numerous open windows it tended to bake a bit in the sun and hold the heat in even after nightfall when there was no breeze, as had happened that last night. And it was noisy, sharing with other people. Even now she could hear the breathing of one of her roommates, though it was a little louder than usual. She wondered if she’d accidentally gotten into the wrong--

Aaaaaand then it all came back to her.

Walking with Rube in the dim moonlight filtering through the clouds. A sudden scream to wake the dead. Dragons in the air, raindrops that felt as big as fists pouring down on them. Hurrying toward the first shelter she could find when lightning began to strike the ground… bumping into another person, and suddenly being overwhelmed with the rising queen dragon’s lust.

She didn’t even want to look and see whom she’d ended up with. She didn’t want the awkwardness of having to recognize him or her if they crossed paths around the Weyr. So, carefully, she opened her eyes, looking away from the hopefully-sleeping body beside her to scope for an exit. And drat. Of course it was on the other side of the room. Joshala held her breath and slooooowly sat up, turned her head, and found herself face to face with a dragon.

She nearly screamed. The sound started to come up her throat, but the turns of avoiding trouble in the mines had made her very good at catching herself before she made too much noise. Instead, she took a moment to calm herself, realizing that the dragon was probably asleep. Its head lay on the chest of her bedmate… who appeared to be male. She supposed she could live with that, although she really, really would have preferred to have been elsewhere last night… somewhere far, far away from Western and its ill-timed gold flights.

As a recovering insomniac, L'fer's recent promotion to wingleader had done nothing to help his sleep schedule. And so, late as it was, the goldflight had found him still awake. He'd gone to wander the halls, hoping the cool air might help clear his head, but instead he'd found himself wrapped up in the arms of a woman he barely knew. A.. candidate, perhaps? Ah well. Not one of his wingriders, and that was really what was important.

Morpeth, sweetling that she was, was ever tolerant of her rider giving into a flight (though she would prefer it if the golds could conduct their business at a more reasonable hour!) Though she had removed herself to her ledge during the night to give her rider and the strange girl some privacy, after the two of them had fallen asleep, Morpeth crept back onto her couch to sleep. At some point during the night she must have nuzzled her head up against L'fer's bed, which she sometimes did even now (though not as much as when she was younger) and fallen asleep like that.

As the morning breeze blew through the weyr, still half-sleepy, her large, faceted eyes opened slowly. And were met with a rather frightened pair she didn't immediately recognize. Sensing alarm in the nearby human, she froze, afraid any more movement might startle her further. Er... Mine? Perhaps you should wake. she said, giving her rider the mental equivalent of an elbow to the ribs.

"What?" he asked, sitting up. Before it all came back to him.. The goldflight. The walk to cool his head. The subsequent chance meeting that had led to.. everything after. "Oh.. Good morning." he said, turning to the girl sitting in bed beside him. "Did you sleep alright?" It seemed like the polite thing to say.
