Losing to the Firekin female had been a learning experience for sure, but accepting defeat was as important as success. Of all the things that Ikhti's mother had drilled into his head, that was one that always stood out. Failure was learning - no on ever learned a thing from always coming out on top. Failure provided the channels to perfection, failure taught humility, failure tempered ego.

He had absorbed this most recent lesson and he was here, ready to try again.

"Fancy meeting you again," he chimed, pleasant enough, though his eyes were alight with focus. She knew what he was here for - there was no reason for excessive pleasantries.

With the simple greeting hanging in the air between them, he dove forward, steadying now as he loped across the sands. The days in the desert had done him well, teaching him a little of how the sands shifted, and as he pulled back to strike at her with a heavy paw he knew it would land before it ever made contact.

Jahim hadn't expected the winged lion she had faced to return so soon, but she had to admit she was glad to see him back. He had been a talented duelist and looking back on their skirmish she knew he had the right stuff in him to be here, he just had to focus on his goals and go after what he wanted. The fact that he was back here so soon was a good sign and she greeted him with a grin, eyes narrowed with delight in the challenge.

"Fancy indeed," she said in return with a little laugh before squaring her shoulders for the battle. She noticed how he seemed more sure of his footing now - good! Improvement! - and his attack was convincing. The blow to her shoulder was strong and well-placed and it hindered her counter attack- keeping it to a hit but barely one to rattle him at all.

The counter blow wasn't strong, but the distance that she closed between them put him an awkward proximity. Sure, he was more certain of his footing on the sands but now, too, he seemed to overthink how they shifted. He could have tried to force his advantage, tried to propel himself forward and attempt to get inside of her guard, but he was wary of the way the dunes worked against him.

Instead, he absorbed the blow and made an even trade.

It wasn't a strong hit, just as hers hadn't been, but it was an worthwhile one. He felt not a drop of shame in choosing to play it safe on her turf - she had bested him once before, after all.

Jahim took into consideration his moves as he battled. Rather than charging in now that she'd kept the distance to a minimum he backed up a bit, returning her warning blow with one of his own. He was cautious now and that was good. Some thought battle was all about running in and beating up whoever you could find, but there was a delicateness about it as well. You didn't want to leap before you looked.

Wanting to keep him on his toes, Jahim dipped in again to swat at his legs rather than his shoulders and face. A good blow might have caught his paws from under him and sent him sprawling to the sands, but she didn't quite connect well enough to do that.

The female's paws grazed across his forelegs but didn't connect well enough to do aught but sting a bit. He could have backed away and played it safe, the tactic had been serving him well enough thus far, but he knew that he would not win by simply avoiding the best of her blows. He wanted to win and he wanted to impress - this female would be his pride mate, he was determined, and that meant making good on his prowess as a brawler now.

With his decision made, he dived into her guard and swung a hard blow at her shoulder, aiming to throw her off balance and take the upper ground for himself. His back paws dug hard into the sands and kept their balance in a way that was certainly practiced, aiding him in putting the entirety of his weight behind the strike.

As it landed, he knew he had stolen a fraction of success for himself, but he didn't even bother to look smug about it. The battle wasn't quite over..

Jahim had expected the rogue to play it cautious this time, so his sudden lunge and attack caught her off guard. The swipe to her shoulder sent her stumbling and as she tried to catch herself, she found her paws sliding out from under her. She hit the sand with a thud and a laugh, quickly springing up again.

"Now that's what I'm talkin' about!" she said with a fierce grin, shaking her head to rid her face of sand. "Come on now, keep it up!" This lion had grit, that was for sure, and he wasn't a quitter. He had gotten her on her back for a moment and that was promising in and of itself.

A mix of surprise and pride pulled across his features, not just because of the fact that he had managed to throw her off of her feet but also because she was so clearly pleased by it. It was an odd thing, he thought, to see a lion so proud of someone's physical accomplishments. There had never been someone quite so pleased to be on the receiving end of his might. Of course, she had already proved once that she could best him, so perhaps this was simply a lack of fear?

"Are you letting me win?" he asked as he circled her, though the small quirk of his smile suggested that he was teasing. He didn't really expect her to be the sort that would just let him win, after all.

He dove as his words died in the air, aiming another well placed swipe of his paw at her legs, hoping that he might be able to toss her off balance again. He could feel the good shift of his weight in the sands and the way it seemed to work with him if he moved just so. He was no expert but he felt like he was getting the hang of it.

The question made Jahim laugh again, an amused look on her face. Let him win? Even if it was said seriously to her it would have been a joke. She hadn't been raised to be particularly fierce or brutal - her father was a guard that had joined from a life in the rogue lands and her mother was a medic - but growing up around such competitive lions had demanded her to rise to any challenge given.

"If I was you'd know it," she teased in return before lowering her center of gravity so she wouldn't be knocked off her feet this time. She did take the blow head-on, but she managed to keep on her paws this time and returned his blow with one of her own, aimed for his jaw rather than his legs now that he was so close.

Ikhti let the words die on the air between them as she swiped at his jaw, managing at the last moment to tilt his head forward so she smacked the solid top of his skull instead, giving him a layer of cushioning thanks to his thick mane. It still smarted and, had he not been so damnably determined to make it past the pride borders this time, he might have stepped back to rub at the assaulted spot.

With a laugh under his breath both at her response and the way her blow was reverberating inside of his noggin, he decided to forego another swipe now that they were in such close proximity and plunged forward. His weight shoved into hers in a half-tackle, half-shove motion, counting on his momentum to win out and finally make her surrender the game.

This was much better than last time! He was having fun with this duel, she could tell, whereas last time he'd been trying so hard he had probably stepped on his own tail and halted himself from showing off his true potential. Now he was comfortable in the sand and with his moves, and as he shoved his weight against her, Jahim felt herself being pushed back and back and back-

"All right, all right!" she said, hopping away from the lion with a wide grin, this one less intense than the one she had given him after he had tossed her to the ground. "I'm convinced. You'll make a great asset to the pride. Welcome home, brother," she added with a wink. "Follow me and I'll show you around."

Yup, he was definitely made of the right stuff. She was glad she had gotten to see his improvement from the first time he had attempted to join. Turning towards the heart of the pride, Jahim motioned for him to follow with her head and trotted off deeper in the desert.
