Adeyemi had been followed to the training grounds by his sister the day following his duel with Shindani. To keep her off the topic of their mother and whatever might be going on between the Firekin and Nergui from here, he went into great detail about how the battle had done, exaggerating his triumphs and downplaying the times his opponent got the best of him. It was, in fact, the most talking he had done in a good while .. and the worst part was that it worked well to distract Adanna. It was more like old times with just the two of them.

She didn't look particularly interested or impressed throughout his story and in fact spent her time watching the soldiers who were training with mild disinterest, thinking about how she really ought to make some other friends so her brother would become even less interesting to her. They were part of the Firekin now, they really didn't have to stick together so closely anymore.. it seemed an old habit after the loss of the Hongshan and their lengthy stay in the Nergui.

"Maybe I should go on patrol," she mused under her breath.

After the shameful loss yesterday, Shindani had done a lot of self-reflection that night. Had he been too confident? Life as a rogue wasn't easy, but clearly his skills as a fighter had softened over time. He had slept alright that night, even his dreams trying to analyze what he did wrong and where he could improve.

The next day, he waited for his mind to relax, and his muscles to feel more right before he approached the training grounds again. Unfortunately, it was the same damn lion as last time, and he brought along a spectator.

"I am Shindani, and I am here for a duel!"

Whatever. He would duel anyone today, regardless if they beat him flatly yesterday.

Adeyemi and Adanna both watched as Shindani suddenly appeared and approached them. He was easy to identify from Adeyemi's description, though the lion hadn't bothered to actually remember his name (if he'd even been given one) the previous day. Adanna looked over at her brother, recognizing the stupid grin on his face and deciding to cut in and ruin it a little for him, even if she knew there was no way this wasn't going to be fun for him.

"I'll take it," Adanna said, stepping forward before Adeyemi could even get on his feet. Adeyemi snorted and chuckled quietly to himself.

"Yeah," he said, "Maybe you'll do better against a lioness."

Adanna turned and glared viciously at her brother, bristling more than she expected even knowing he was going to say something stupid to try to get under the challenger's skin. She looked back to Shindani, rolling her eyes.

"Ignore Adeyemi," she said, "He's strong and occasionally lucky but he's an idiot."

Adeyemi rolled his eyes. They were very clearly brother and sister.

"My name is Adanna," she said, walking out to put some distance between them and their amused spectator, "And I accept your challenge."

Shindani rolled his eyes when Adeyemi attempted to insult him by implying that fighting a lioness was easier. He knew from personal experience that that wasn't particularly true, especially when remembering some of the lionesses from his birth pride.

Shindani nodded to Adanna, thrilled that his challenge was even accepted after his humiliating loss yesterday. He decided to take his time, and really look at Adanna before rushing towards her for the first strike.

And unlike yesterday, he managed a blow. Perhaps he was taking it more seriously this time?

Move 1/5: Glancing Blow!
Total: 2; Shindani: 3

Adanna followed the same starting pattern as Adeyemi, putting her at an unknown disadvantage as she waited to see what he would do. She saw him coming but she guessed wrong in attempting to dodge and wound up in line for a direct blow.

Bracing herself, she snarled and pushed back immediately. Unfortunately, his attack put her off balance and the best she could do was a sharp reminder that she was still in this despite a poor start.

On the sidelines, Adeyemi pushed himself up to a seated position to watch the fight. Despite his implication that Adanna was an easier opponent, he was surprised when Shindani immediately struck her- and that she couldn't quite retaliate. The older lion must have taken something out of his fight the previous day, already it was looking better.

The success was something that he consciously recognized, but he wasn't going to let it go to his head. There was still a lot more of this fight to go, and he wasn't going to let anything mess with him after yesterday.

Yesterday's fight was going to be something hard to let go, regardless if he saw Adeyemi much. To be pinned down like that...

And that thought distracted him just enough that he felt a slight mark from Adanna, but thankfully it didn't hit very hard. He did his best to keep an eye on her movement, as well as her legs. Which was was she going to go next?
He took a guess, and struck out for another blow, this time aiming for her neck with his paw.

Move 2/5: Glancing Blow!
Total: 4; Shindani: 5

As quickly as he dodged her, she managed to dodge back. His paw scraped against her neck- an excellent target that wasn't necessarily easy to get completely out of range in a hurry- and she moved to retaliate. Unfortunately, so close together, it was hard to pick a target and get in a solid blow. She aimed her paws but felt mostly air as she went.

Adeyemi watched, mentally trying to keep a score for them in his head. It was about as close as his own match had been at this point, almost.. Shindani didn't look like he was going to let himself slip up this time, but that remained to be seen..

They were too close together. Somehow he felt like that might work for him; last time he pulled back to try and get more maneuvering room, he failed miserably. So he kept himself close to her, snarling and snapping his jaws a bit as he tried to figure out the best way to land another clean blow. The first one had been great, but at least he didn't land face first in the dirt yet.

He swiveled his rear-half towards her, hoping to throw her off balance and give himself a little surprise advantage to hopefully hit her again.

Move 3/5: Bide!
Total: 6; Shindani: 7

Shindani succeed in throwing Adanna off balance but that was about all he managed to do. Unknowingly mirroring her brother's tactic, she ducked out of the close-range battle and put some space between them. Adeyemi noticed and chuckled to himself, but raised a brow where she instead stood directly facing Shindani instead of staying on the move.

She didn't need to circle him to look for an opening, she just had to be ready to react. So she waited to see how he would close the gap between them.

Shindani was glad he hadn't missed, but disappointed that it didn't seem to phase her. She was a much more skilled warrior than Adeyemi had seemed to imply; whether that was a ruse or not, Shindani was only glad he hadn't let it get into his head.

He noticed that they shared some fighting traits. Perhaps they had trained together for a long time, and learned to share certain techniques without really realizing it. Adanna was just different enough to Shindani had to keep his guard up; he wasn't going to make the same mistake as yesterday.

He rushed her, but made sure to feint his movements a bit, and not pin it all into one strong pin. This time he was going to slip around and smack her across her jaw.

Move 4/5: Miss!
Total: 7; Shindani: 10

Adanna followed Shindani's movements carefully but a last minute feint saw his paw hit her square in the jaw- and naturally, where her jaw went, she went. It took her eyes off him long enough that when she struck back with her paws, he was already gone and she completely missed her chance-- and left herself wide open for another blow.

Adeyemi blinked, watching as this time it was Adanna who slipped up. The blow to the face was rough but her recovery was just the worst. Not as obviously embarrassing and falling over, but up there. In his opinion, anyway.

Whether or not Shindani got her again, it wasn't looking good for Adanna.

Shindani felt his heart skip a beat when he felt the contact of that hit. Perhaps he had hit her a little bit harder than he needed to, but he felt like she was a more skilled fighter than her brother. Perhaps it was in their conflicting attitudes that he felt that way.

He had jumped back as soon as he felt the blow hit, and he was glad he did. The woosh of air that followed was from her attempting to retaliate for that hit; but it missed.

Shindani was feeling like perhaps they were close to the end, but Adanna didn't seem quiet ready to throw in the towel.

He went in for another hit, hoping to land another solid blow to end the duel...

Move 5/5: Hit!
Total: 10; Shindani: 12 - Shindani wins!

Somehow, in no small part due to luck, Adanna managed not only to dodge his next blow but strike back. Meeting in the middle of the two attempts to end this, it was left down to who was most stubborn and capable of keeping their balance while tangled up. Unfortunately for Adanna, she didn't have Shindani's size or weight behind her and she was the first to give. When her feet his the sand, she scrambled back submissively.

Adeyemi stood up as the end of the duel loomed, just in time to see Adanna back off and all but admit defeat. Tempting as it was to shout, he stayed quiet, smirking from his spot nearby.

Shindani took a moment to breathe, not realizing that he had begun to feel the effects of the fight. With that pause, his grey-green eyes glanced between Adanna and Adeyemi. Between both of their reactions, it seemed like he had actually won this fight, even if it didn't end as embarrassingly as yesterday's.

He waited another long moment, not wanting to seem too eager to announce his win (due to not wanting to show disrespect to his opponent). "Thank you for the duel," he offered Adanna, deciding instead to ignore Adeyemi and keep his attention to Adanna.

With a sigh, Adanna straightened herself out and smiled at Shindani, also ignoring her brother who was plainly visible in the corner of her eye. He was a promising recruit, then. And hopefully he'd find a better soldier to evaluate and train him now that he was officially a Firekin.

"Congratulations," she said, "Welcome to the Motoujamii."

She considered wishing him luck and telling him not all the Firekin were like Adeyemi but.. well, the truth was, most of them were an awful lot like him, just in different ways. Newbies always figured it out eventually and got comfortable.

Adeyemi sat back down, shaking his head.
