Swansea is a coastal city in Wales, and the second largest city in the country. It is located on the Swansea Bay, in the county of Glamorgan. It is the second most populous city, after Cardiff. Swansea was nicknamed 'Copperopolis' during the 19th century, due to its production of copper. It first developed as a Viking trading post, and after Norman conquest and following the Industrial Revolution, became renowned for its smelters. During World War II it was the target of much German bombing and suffered heavy destruction during the 'Three Nights Blitz' in the February of 1941. It was not granted city status until 1969. The ruins of the Swansea Castle, the Marina, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, the Swansea Museum, the Dylan Thomas Arts Centre, the Environment Centre, and the Swansea Market (the largest indoor market in Wales) attract many visitors. The beaches around the city make it a surfing hot spot.
