Newport is a cathedral and university city in south east Wales, along the River Usk. It is the third largest city in Wales. Newport has functioned as port since the medieval age, and was a major coal exporter in the 19th century. It was also the site of the largest armed uprising in British history, the Newport Rising of 1839, led by Chartists, working class activists campaigning for full (male) suffrage for non-landowners. Newport was officially granted city status in 2002. The city has many historical landmarks, including castles and cemeteries. Newport natives are known as Newportians.
