LongJiang School of Magic (龙江魔法学院) is one of several schools in China serving the Chinese magical community. Although the school is not one of the oldest, it is the biggest, with its campus spread across four locations across the country. The school boasts a wide selection of classes and a quality education, citing the high job placement percentage of its students within a year of graduation. Uniquely, LongJiang is one of the only schools that require all of its students to study English and Mathematics regardless of blood status.

The school was founded in 900 AD after the existing schools could not keep up with the demand of a proper education. The first campus, located in the Baiyun Mountains, welcomed any student who expressed willingness to learn. Baiyun Mountains was specifically chosen by the founders for its proximity to Zhu Jiang, the Pearl River, due to its connection to the beautiful myth surrounding the creation of China’s Four Great Rivers.

The myth told the story of four dragons: Black Dragon, Yellow Dragon, Long Dragon, and Pearl Dragon. Upon noticing the drought that plagued mankind, they flew to the Jade Emperor, begging for rain. The Jade Emperor forbade it and ordered the dragons to ignore the drought. Instead of following their orders, the four dragons rebelled and sent rain down to Earth, saving mankind. As punishment for their disobedience, the dragons were imprisoned under mountains for all eternity. In their last act of sacrifice, the dragons turned their bodies into water, which leaked from the mountains to form the Four Great Rivers: Heilong Jiang (Amur River), Huang He (Yellow River), Chang Jiang (Yangtze River), and Zhu Jiang (Pearl River).

The myth also inspired the name of the school, LongJiang, or “Dragon River”. The tale is told at every Welcoming Feast in an effort to inspire students to do what’s right and to practice kindness.

The second LongJiang campus opened in Harbin in the 1100’s upon recognizing unmet demands for education in the North. This campus is located near Heilong Jiang. Soon, the third campus in Chongqing opened in the 1500’s, its campus near Yangtze River. The fourth campus opened in 1600’s in Luoyang near Huang He.

The four campuses, of course, are fully accessible to all enrolled students. Such a feat was achieved using a series of archways permanently connecting one campus to another--upon walking underneath one such archway, a witch or wizard will be brought to the campus the archway is connected to. Unfortunately, the archways are expensive and hard to maintain, frequently breaking and needing repair due to natural wear and tear. It doesn’t help that all archways were built in outdoor gardens. New students are warned of this issue on the night of their arrival, and are shown the large room of portkeys which can be used to move between campuses. Brown paper bags are stocked nightly in said rooms.

Each campus is surrounded by lush forests as well as steep, rocky cliffs to prevent muggles from reaching the campus. Recent mountain climbing tourist attractions yielded difficulty in keeping the status of secrecy for the school, but LongJiang maintained its secrecy by artificially creating landslides to discourage muggles from further pursuing additional tourism in the area.

Upon turning ten, a child will receive an invitation to apply to LongJiang. The application for muggleborns are delivered by current students or alumnis in the area, with the understanding that the deliverer of the invitation be the muggleborn’s mentor for all things magic. The application is a formality, used by LongJiang as a way to enroll the prospective student in the nearest campus and to keep an accurate account of all attending students. Students are encouraged to seriously consider the other Chinese schools before committing to LongJiang. Moreover, LongJiang will not accept transfer students from any other schools, though the school allows enrolled students to transfer to other schools should they choose, with the stipulation that they will not be allowed to transfer back.

New students are given their uniforms after being sorted into their Parties. The winter uniforms are made of cotton, while the summer uniforms are made from silk produced on LongJiang campus. All uniforms possess an embroidery of the school’s crest featuring their Party’s dragon.

The academic calendar aligns closely with the muggle Chinese schools, including a full month of break during the weeks surrounding Chinese New Years. Students are heavily encouraged to go home to spend Chinese New Years with family. From the day the school goes on break until the day before the celebration, the school’s Floo Network reserved for summer use for school tour purposes is open for student use. This also means a student’s family is allowed to visit the school grounds for any purposes, though visitors will be assigned an escort to ensure all school rules are abided by. A celebratory feast will be hosted by the school for any students or faculty opting to remain at the school during this holiday.

All students are required to be a member of at least one extracurricular activity. The school boasts a slew of activities, including Embroidery Club, Cooking and Baking Club, Association of Rice Enthusiasts, Dueling Club, Quidditch, Mathematics League, Storytellers, just to name a few.

xxxxxxLongJiang Facultyxxx

Faculty at LongJiang are recruited from around the country. Employment is an invitation-only basis to strictly control the quality of teaching at the school. Thus, it is quite common for professors to boast high achievements or a long, prestigious career before being employed at LongJiang. Of course, exceptions apply for the diamonds in the rough, who may not have had the opportunity to express their talents and skills. All potential professors are screened by a panel of current professors. Students are encouraged to attend the portion of the screening where the candidate gives a 30-minute lecture, and evaluate the candidate on their ability to teach. This ensures that the potential hire is capable of actually teaching. All current professors are required to undergo yearly reviews during the summer months to ensure educational goals of students are met.

C.A.R.P., or Current Assessment of Requirements and Prerequisites, is taken at the end of third year to assess learning of core magic classes. Only with an overall passing grade will a student be allowed to choose electives. Failing this class results in a year worth of remedial classes and a delay in enrolling in electives for a full year.

L.O.T.U.S, or Lengthy Odious Test for Unsatisfactory Study, is taken at the end of a student’s fifth year, similar to United Kingdom’s O.W.L. exams. Retakes are allowed at the end of the summer, prior to the start of sixth year.

THE FINALS is the final exam given to seventh years prior to graduation. Retakes are allowed the following year, at the cost of a full year of delay in graduation. The second grade will fully replace the first grade regardless of the second grade. Unlike the previous two exams, THE FINALS is not an acronym.

xxxxxxLongJiang Parties xxx

The party system was not implemented until the second campus was built. In other words, the first few generations of students at LongJiang did not belong to any party. A student’s sorting starts with said student being seated underneath a dragon sculpture. The sculpture will sort the student by dousing them with water from one of the four rivers. Which river's water the student is doused with shall be the student's party. Newly sorted students will then change into their perspective party’s uniform.

                      Heilong:
The main color of the Heilong Party is black. The students of this party are chosen for their patience and temperance. These students are perhaps more observant and quiet in nature, perpetuating the stereotype that the Heilong Party is “full of introverts”.

                      Huanglong:
The main color of the Huanglong Party is yellow. Students of this party were chosen for their optimistic and gregarious nature. Similar to Heilong Party, Huanglong Party is considered to be “full of extroverts”.

                      Changlong:
The main color of the Changlong is red. The students sorted into this part are selected based on their diligence. Hard work is celebrated, and rarely will a student of this party lack a driving goal. Unfortunately, this party observes the highest stress among the entire student body due to the higher occurrence of exhaustion of workaholics.

                      Zhulong:
The main color of the Zhulong Party is white. Students from this party were chosen for their nurturing nature. A natural propensity towards kindness and empathy defines this party, where all is welcomed with open arms.

“So according to our last divination class, Tuesday a close friend is winning big money and Wednesday I’m meeting with the love of my life.” Yang commented as she and her friends made their way across campus. The group had taken to studying at a table between the greenhouses and meditation garden and ended up meeting there, but since exams were over, none of them had any inclination to hang out there.

“The Dumpling Association’s 100-Dumpling party is Tuesday,” Geling mentioned. She had gotten much more comfortable hanging out with this group after the cram school that summer and the occasional study session over the year. She had shown up today without even the pretense of doing something for the paper. ”There are a few raffles going; that might count as winning big?”

“Ooh? Are you meeting Zhao Hu on Wednesday?” Liwei added with an exaggerated wink.

”Yeah, he wants to get dinner and I wanted to talk about music theory,” Yang replied matter-of-factly. A few months ago in Divination she’d predicted that terrible things would happen since she did well on her mock exams, and the worst thing that had happened because of exams was that her defense professor had asked her to tutor a few younger students--and while that took some time away from her own studying, it was for a good cause and fairly helpful in its own right. So while usually Yang put some stock in her divination results, she thought they had been extra weird this last year. Hopefully she’d done well on the Divination LOTUS at least.

”Music theory? Exams are over! Come on, just do a normal date,” Liwei threw a dramatic arm around Yuhei, making wild gestures with his arm. “Can we discuss how she is dating Changlong’s sixth year party representative and Quidditch Captain, a legend on the guzheng, and she’s using him for class help? Or most importantly: that jawline. So sharp you could trim Wiggentrees with it. Yuhei back me up on this. They’ve been dating him for what, 2 months? 3? Help me out here. We're planning them a proper date proper date.”

“I'd rather watch you two Quidditch. And as far as I understand, it was one dinner and a kiss on the cheek,” Yang pointed out, with a partial eye-roll. She didn't quite know what to think about dating, besides it seemed to be a lot of obligatory walking to class together and polite conversation. But maybe now that exams were over they could do something fun, like duel or go to a museum. Not that restaurants weren't fun, but her dad worked in one and she had her fill. Thinking of her dad though-- ”Speaking of Wiggentrees, do you think they’d take 5th years for the botanical garden internship? It doesn’t pay much, but taking care of trees and plants sounds more interesting than any muggle jobs.”

“Isn’t he the music professor’s son?” Geling asked, ignoring the internship question. She turned her inquisitive gaze on Yuhei. ”Yuhei, you're Yang's closest friend, what do you think about him?”

Edit: I found a continuity error and just changed Geling's last line to dismiss it.

It's been five years since you left
Two months and eleven days
Count the seconds every breath
And watch the road roll out like ribbon
And maybe he just can't forget
All the miles they have driven
Since the moment that they met
