          ... I am the Serpent ...

        • Before Zahara's arrival... Mission for Zahara Kevali // Clear out Ryuchi Cave

The caves were quiet lately, little stirred since Zahara left the Kin to rejoin civilized society. Many of the serpents had grown accustomed to the sage being around but still were weary of outsiders. Kagami, one of the elder snakes of the Kin was in one of the larger caverns to where sunlight beamed in and she preferred to bask her scales while she could. Smooth stone tunnels and sand were all that filled the caverns, carefully sculpted and refined over the years it was with Zahara turning the caverns to something more defensible for the Kin with his doton chakra.

Lately over the last few weeks the caves been stirred from the outside, curious individuals were making their rounds in the area. At first the snakes were merely cautious, it wasn't unknown for their kind to be sought out over the last few years. Ever since Zahara left the knowledge of the snake contract lessened in the past few months and visitations to their domain was all but scarce. It would usually be a lone shinobi purposely looking for them, giving up then heading on somewhere else or some friend of their sage making a routine check up. But now it was the same group of no known affiliation, scouting and setting camp even the past few nights. They always poked around the caves near sunrise and sundown, three at a time but the young Kin swore there were more.

Ginda was in hibernation and the lesser Kin were left in charge for the time being, she was still recovering from the summoning back in Giman when she withstood a dust beam -- no thanks to Zahara of all people. Today, Kagami was sunning herself in her cavern and coiled in place, the other summons were elsewhere in the caverns but she had them all on standby. She was aware of the humans today, their smell crept into the cavern and she waited - pretending to be asleep as she dared not make a move of her own. All she could do was wait, keeping her Kin ready and her rattler ready to signal.

"Are you sure this is the place?" A group of shinobi stood at the mouth of the caves, three men in black and red garb. One held a torch up to the darkness of the interior, a rag tied around his head and he carried a scimitar of sorts. Another held a large scroll on their back, spear in hand and was shaven except for a thick red beard. They were on the opposing flanks of the bigger man in the center who was coming off the top of a horse just as they were arriving.

"Yes, I'm sure, quiet now Yuzon." the ringleader of the trio spoke up, a big brute of a man with a gnarly scar across his face, one eye blinded. Unlike the other two, he carried no weapon of his own save for a thick pair of gloves with fuuin inscriptions lining his arms. He pulled out from his pockets a crumpled piece of paper, opening it up to read as he motioned the other two to read.

Yuzon came first, dropping the torch at the mouth of the cave while the one bald one with the spear peered over the man's shoulder. "The cave with the darkness that not even fire lights up, stone smooth as a babe's arse, and absence of wildlife around. Those are the signs of this place." He closed the paper and pointed up the mountain the caves burrowed into, pointing out the camouflaged tunnels higher up, most too small for humans. "Senjutsu reeks in this area, up there you can even see where some of them have tunnels." The other two nodded and the spearman gave a whistle and waved to their troop nearby.

"Well I'll say Edio, your contacts are something else." Yuzon said, as he straightened his belt with the weapon. A few of the men now showed themselves on horseback, a gaggle of armored soldiers now present as the spearman waved them in and went to converse with them on the plans. Edio, the large man of the trio, was going over his notes as Yuzon remained with him and asked. "So, how do we get one to cooperate with us? We only need one." Yuzon asked as Edio looked up, glancing at his subordinate.

"It's why we have Tarso. His eyes will pacify the creature, then we make our move." Edio jabbed a thumb back at the spearman and grinned as Yuzon slowly caught on with a laugh and Edio joined in. The troop of soldiers were with Tarso now as he was explaining their role to the group. Edio was looking for the snakes of Ryuchi cave for a specific purpose, he was in the market for acquiring Venom from the serpents, but the real prize was gaining control over Ginda herself and weaponize her chakra. They received a contract from some robed individuals who expressed they've had a deep interest in the snakes and provided intimate details on the cave's location, they wanted control of the creatures within. Edio and his men figured they can make a profit, venom, weaponize the poisonous chakra of Ginda and poach the lesser snakes alive and dead for the markets.

The appearance of Ginda during the fight between Zahara and Nava had attracted the attention of an old foe, one before Whirlpool fell many years ago. Now men gathered as Tarso gave the commands to the hired hands and they were getting in place and he came to rejoin Edio and Yuzon. "They've been given the word, just need to go in now. They'll come in through some of the other tunnels, while half follow us through the main tunnel." Tarso mobilized the men now as he planted the butt of his spear in the ground.

"Aight, you two remember your roles?" Edio said as his men affirmed yes and their small little operation began. One... that was doomed for failure.

          ... I am the Serpent ...

        • Ryuchi cave was quiet during the day, the only sound within were the echoes of footsteps from the humans intruding the home. Kagami roused a little when she heard them, voices at the end of the cavern from the many tunnels leading to it. Her tongue flicked, tasting the air for them and remained still where she coiled. The rattler would prove a boon to signal the children, but she could detect more than just a handful of fools but a small task force.

Edio was the lone pointman moving in a large spacious tunnel, its stone smooth and it was larger than most natural caves, bits of skin were on the ground that only cemented his belief that this was the right place. It was easy money and the venom and snakes would sell well, alive or dead, in the black market. The larger creatures, the summons, would be the biggest problem and Tarso was the key figure in the plan to pacify the beasts with his sharingan. Meanwhile, Yuzon was the backup enforcer, a phantom slayer specialist who'd help secure a advantageous victory against the Sage. They knew the caves were protected, and Tarso's men would have to act swiftly with Edio and Yuzon holding off opposing forces while he commits the sealing rites.

They came upon the larger cavern now where the evidence of where Kagami slumbered in the sunlight still beaming in from above. Edio was the first to make his way in, the other two going down the tunnels for another point of entry. The large man observed the serpent, walking slowly at first as her eye's retina opened and a narrow slit in a sea of amber was staring at him.

"I was not expecting visitors." The rattler said, her voice low and raspy as the man took two steps back. She was large and from the size of the tunnels, she was far from the largest creature here but Edio said nothing. The other two were up higher in the caverns, smaller snakes scattered away from Yuzon in particular. A few of the men under Tarso's employ caught some of the lesser snakes in the lower levels, some fought back and they've killed the retaliates and wounded a few that got away.

"You walk in dangerous territory human. Explain yourself or best be off." Kagami could hear the commotion and her anger seethed within. She couldn't give the signal yet, others were in the cave that needed to reveal themselves.

"Is that how you treat an aspiring summoner?" Edio splayed his arms open with a grin, goading the serpent. The plan had begun but the wild card was yet to show itself, the Sage. His men were doing their work and the stealth was up, his grinned wavered slightly with the screams of mean from the inner tunnels.

The attack had begun. Elder snakes responded deeper into the tunnels, mambas striking from ambush and constrictors overwhelming the brutes and crushing their bodies. A few of the younger kin were lost already in the initial surprise, the older kin however struck back and hard, their scales hard like an armor and fangs puncturing flesh. Tarso and Yuzon were more adept in their skill, the men under their command were not shinobi themselves but merely pirates.

All around the larger cavern the sound of fighting rang out as Edio and Kagami stared each other down and she still had not gave the proper signal. "Enough of your liessss." She lunged, fangs bared and rattler shaking as the engagement between the two begun. The ground shuddered under the impact as Edio's skin turned bright red, the eight gates flared alive as the man caught Ginda's jaws with both hands and shoved her back a few feet. Kagami re-positioned around a stalagmite and hissed, the rattler going off as its sound echoed down the tunnels.

"Let's go boys!" Edio shouted as he turned up his chakra another level of the gates "It's time to bring down some reptiles!" The man and the snake engaged each other then as Kagami proved herself rather nimble for one of her size easily keeping herself on par with Edio.

          Dead Man Walking

          ... I am the Serpent ...

        • The initial attack had left the serpents of the cave beaten and subdued temporarily, Tarso's sharingan was activated sometime during the scuffle and it had gone down hill. Kagami the serpent had been hypnotized and the rest of the snakes were effectively pacified by the trio and their goon squad. Casualties had mounted upon both sides but the rattle Kagami produced signaled the wild card of what was Zahara. Tarso had the large snake sealed within a scroll while he sent his men further in the caves in pursuit of the others. Ginda was hibernating still since her injuries with the battle of Giman, she would slumber longer still as the caves became infested with the humans who sought their prize. They've begun to seal the lesser snakes and Edio gave a deep hearty laugh, the creatures were under their control for the most part as Yuzon went over the finer points of the plan. The ground quivered then as Tarso set his hand on the seal, a summoning technique was being performed with the echoes of raspy voices coming from further down the caverns.

"What's going on!? I thought you had them under control!" Yuzon yelled until the screams began and the three readied their weapons, Edio's fists clenched, Tarso's spear and Yuzon's sword. All of their men began to drop to their knees, wailing blood curdling screams and clawing at their own eyes. Confused and frightened, the mass hysteria continued as their eyes went dark one by one as they each witnessed their own men clawing at themselves in terror. The blood pouring from their orifices as the pleas shrieked for it all to end as everything blackened as dark muck welled from their self inflicted wounds. It was then Zahara appeared in an explosive boom, the wild card as he swung with reckless abandon, fury brought upon those who threatened his children of the caves. The initial burst cause a man nearby to erupt into nothing but a splotch of red mist, fire seared through the air from the bakuton igniting flesh and now the sage swept through the ranks with his shredding blade Samehada. They were trapped in a world of illusion brought on by the snakes voices koraboing with the Sage as he had appeared, sending their minds in a spiraling void and now he cut each of them down with single strokes of the shaving sentient blade that chittered with glee as it began feeding.

It was Yuzon who broke free of the illusion first, releasing his companions and they've engaged with a furious sage who been unaccounted for. His spear was readied and now the fight had only just begun while they quickly realized their rank and file grunts had all been eliminated or still stuck in their wailing symphony of terror. Zahara yelled as the Samehada still chittered in his hands while he channeled his chakra through himself with the golden wraith of his senjutsu. Fire roared out from his body as Zahara shot a small ball of ember to the cavern floor before it spread like water, engulfing those who remained as it became fueled by the natural energy as the blaze eruption technique consumed the pitiful grunts who still remained, their screams drowned in the roar of fire. Edio and his cronies were untouched as the blaze continued until they were isolated in the sea of flame in a small island of 30 feet, they were spared purposefully for the sage's wrath.

It was Kagami's rattle that signaled his return from Konoha, a seal array etched all throughout the caverns with the help of a Uzumaki sealing master who had became his pupil over the past few months. The sealing array allowed the Sage and those with the code for it to appear anywhere in the caverns, to be intimately aware of the happenings of the cave as long as they were called forth from one of the serpents, or use the seal array itself as a linchpin to summon themselves to the caves. Zahara never thought the set up would be used until now, the blood of his serpentine children had fallen to rogues once at the battle of Arashi and now it happened in the sanctuary of their home.

"You invade my children's home and slaughter my Kin. Your only sentence is death, your penance will be your bones as ash." Zahara sheathed his weapon upon his back, walking through the flames as chakra continued to wisp off his skin in golden light. The trio of rogues were circling then, Tarso's eyes set on the man as the Sage's amber eyes now had a black slit like a snake. Yuzon gripped his blade and Tarso charged with his spear, the duo moving in unison while Edio began hand seals. Zahara cracked his neck in annoyance, settling his feet in at the advancing duo. The spear of Tarso was coated in the Raikiri technique, eyes still ablaze with the while Yuzon dashed with mirror images of himself appearing along his path as while his form took on a demonic visage. Zahara didn't waver but could feel the fear seep into his mind at the foreign chakra assailing his sight and mind, the depth perception twisted but he mentally shrugged it off and in a split second he took a step and a shadow clone was produced.

The spearman Tarso was meant with a straightforward jab as the first Zahara stepped into the Raikiri Spear, fist thrown in a wild haymaker ablaze with fiery chakra with his own raikiri mixed into the technique. The explosion erupted, the expanding ball of flame shattering the spear and Tarso's entire right half. The arm was shredded, shoulder blown out of its socket and half the man's torso was exposed while the Zahara clone imploded into a large eruption, turning the Uchiha into nothing more than a soot stain. Yuzon however was more nimble, weaving and dancing with his twirling blade and phantom visage as he tried to feint and confuse the Sage. Instead, Zahara activated his byakugan and peered through the useless flourishing his opponent done and shot a single chakra needle. Yuzon's demon-esque visage faded like that of a mirage, whisking away like smoke as his hand dropped the sword he held with a clatter as it hit the ground. Right between the eyes Yuzon was shot by the chakra needle and his scary display of genjutsu was cut to an anti-climatic yet satisfying end as he crumpled to the floor like a sack of potatoes.

Edio was an entirely different beast unlike his two useless subordinates, the man was a sage himself as golden light gleamed from his body and the eight gates turned his skin vibrant red. He moved with the force of a bear behind every blow, the speed of a wildcat and the ferocity of an eagle. Zahara had to go on the defensive soon as he was within range of the man's blows, emitting chakra from his body in a spinning rotation and sent him back. They've clashed now, Zahara caught the first punch with something a bit unusual for him and he gripped the beefcake into a grapple while his fingers pressed down on pressure points. He immobilized Edio's arm, weakening the strike to nothing and now he struck Edio's neck, sternum, stomach with pulses of chakra hitting internally as each was just a tiny tap with a resounding boom. His breath gone, his mind wandered as Zahara let go of the man and shoved him back. Edio found his strength lacking, body paralyzed and then Zahara delivered the final five strikes; two in the head, three following the spine to his diaphram and Zahara struck critical points of his chakra network. "Last Resort, Eight Gates Assault." He said and cracked his neck as Edio stumbled onto the ground, his sage mode and gates were no more and he've been effectively gentled from his chakra. "Tell me how to undo the seals holding my snakes, or you'll live to regret crossing me."

Edio laughed, coughing in between each chuckle as Zahara stood over the man, his hand touching the hilt of the sharkskin. "A-And why should I?" he laughed again and scooted a bit further back. "You're just gonna kill me an--" Before he could finish, he felt a icy hot pain on his hand when he reached for a concealed dagger. A chakra needle Zahara fired had hit the tip of his thumb and severed the first two fingers as he yowled in pain.

"I want you alive, but you don't have to be intact to be of any use to me." Zahara warned him again, this time stomping on his foot and let out explosive chakra as it shattered the man's ankle and now only held attached by the ligaments. "Tell me! Or I'll cut it off at the hip. Don't test my patience." Zahara stepped harder into the man's injured foot, grinding his boot into the wound and still gripped the hilt of the sharkskin which chittered happily.

"Okay okay okay! Stop, please!" Edio begged as he finally complied, explaining Tarso's seals as Zahara kept a frim grip on the sword he carried. The seal was simple in theory from what it sounded like and then Zahara grabbed Edio by the collar of his shirt and pulled him up. One simple punch to the temple and the blubbering man was out like a light, slumping back to the ground unconscious.

Zahara released the effects of his sage mode then, his byakugan deactivated as he took in the gravity of the situation in his caves. Blood was everywhere, his kin were dead in places, fire scarred the very stone and scrolls lain about. He spent days since then undoing the seals that held the majority of his serpents, his experience in sealing was limited but he worked at it until the job was accomplished. Edio, the man who lead the rogues into his caves had been thoroughly questioned each day, his patience thin and anger high as he broke fingers, pulled teeth among other methods to get answers. Zahara didn't contact Shuusui, he had Shiro keep tabs on the Uzumaki during those few days to not come and instead keep to their training. Zahara felt responsible for the attack, the guilt of not having been there to begin with to save those who had been killed, Kagami and the other elder snakes however did survive and were left alone.

The snake cult from back on Uzu was behind the motive, obtain the power of the serpents and the rogues simply just wanted cash for what the creatures were potentially worth. The news had been unsettling to Zahara as he was sure he was thoroughly done with the cult back when the meteors fell upon the village. Zahara spent the days in meditation, his captive Edio was sealed away in a scroll as he intended to bestow upon him a fate that he knew a certain someone would adore. But now, he meditated and helped the serpents recover from the ordeal. The presence of the cult shook him still, Zahara was for the first time in awhile, without answers as he spoke with Ginda when she awoke from slumber. No answer to any questions, only hisses and curses, she was still... angry at him. The day ticked slowly... and then...

The sun went out, dark and Zahara opened his eyes from the meditative state he was in to hear the commotion of his snakes. The chatter of confusion, whispers of ruin were all he heard. It was time to return home, Zahara collected the scroll of the rogue, his sword and then commenced a seal before he whisked off to Konoha, calling on one particular scroll in general...

Finding the mysterious cave of the summon lands was easy as far as Hitotsu was concerned. It took a while, but everything took a while for him. He was never the best at anything he did, although he would act like it. His white hair blew in the breeze as he entered the large cave opening. Moving along through the large cave he could already see them, snakes. Where were they? Just about everywhere from what he could tell. Of course that simply meant that he was in the right place. He could tell though they all were looking at him. Perhaps it had been a long time since a human had come to this place in particular. Whatever the reason it didn't really bother Hitotsu much that they were so focused on him. The air flow blowing his hair slowed to a stop as he proceeded deeper into the caverns of the snakes. When it did, it seemed that a particular snake had approached him. Hitotsu stopped for a moment and looked at the rather small snake that chose to approach him. About the size of his arm, and then it would speak to him. "You're sso eassy to find. You sshould fix that." The feminine voice chided the man who simply looked down at her. "Do I need a reason to hide? I'm here to become a summoner after all. Why should I hide from you?" He asked the snake.

"You have a good point." The snake answered, then began to move into the cave. Hitotsu followed the snake without any sort of indication to do such. The small snake looked back towards him and asked. "Why do you follow with no indication you're going in the right direction?" She asked him, to which Hitotsu would just look at her for a moment. "I'm sure you'll get be there eventually." He said, his expression didn't change much though his tone seemed to indicate mocking of sorts. The snake didn't like it much...but he was here to become a summoner. Who was she to deny him that. "Fine, I'll take you to her." She said to him. Leading him through the caverns, as he looked around he realized. He probably would have gotten lost in this place had this snake not come to guide him. Of course that being said, being lost in this place wouldn't have been that bad. Eventually he would have found someone who knew where to go, and that of course meant that he'd get there eventually.

Finally the small snake and the man would exit a tunnel into a dark chamber. His eyes were not amazing in the darkness, the snakes definitely had a big benefit in these tunnels. However he could tell even without the sight that the chamber they entered was huge. Much bigger than he expected it to be. The only thing he could see were large eyes that stared at him through the darkness. "Why do you come to my domain? To be a ssssssummoner? You do not look to be worthy of sssssuch grace." Another feminine voice, this time different from the smaller snake who seemed to have already left the chamber not wishing to be around when whatever wrath was brought upon this newcomer. "Worthiness? You think I lack it? You seem to be more a fool than I thought." An angry hiss quickly followed the voice of the white haired man. However there was no flinching, of any sort from the man. The confidence he exuded seemed to basically only be matched by the the confidence the likely large snake herself exuded. Which at the very least interested her. "Very well. We have not been called in much time. We know not where the other holder issss. Sssso, you will be the holder for now...perhapsssss indefinitely. You will need to do sssssage training. I refussssssse to accept anyone who can not be a sssssssage." The snake spoke, Hitotsu's response was quick and simple. "Then teach me." He created a blade from chakra, and sliced his hand in order to draw blood. In the darkness where he was sure the contract would be. "You already have sssage aptitude, traveling to this chamber wassss your training." The snake said, as the contract was formed. Then suddenly a wave of nature chakra engulfed Hitotsu's form. Staggering for a moment, his vision changed. He could see in the dark now, he stared at the chamber. Much larger than he thought it had been initially. Then he looked at the snake's form. Realizing how large the female snake actually was as she coiled multiple times around the large chamber. "Now, off with you. Do not call me unlesssssssss absssssoltely necessssssssary." To which Hitotsu would oblige and head out. Having learned everything he needed and become a snake sage.
