He was caught between a rock and a hard place. The rock, being his trip back to the Nchi`mahadhi and the hard place being that he was leaving behind his three beautiful girls. He had spoken with Lief specifically. She had caught him heading towards the border and he wouldn't forget their brief, albeit intense, conversation. He shook his head and removed the thoughts from his mind. There was not much time for distractions out among the rogues.

So he continued his trek.

A small stream appeared in his peripheral vision soon after he coaxed himself from over thinking. It was just the break he'd need. Arriving at its side he rolled his shoulders and dropped a number of items from his back including a couple baskets. A drum, laced with leather, remained around his neck and graced the waters surface as he lowered himself for a drink. It was a wonder that the drum remained in tact.

Finishing his drink he sat up, stretched a bit and sighed contentedly.

Great minds think alike, at least his father had always said so. Most of the time it had only been his way of consoling Bovu whenever his twin tried to take his play things but it applied here and now, he thought, as he arrived at the stream nearly at the same time as the other male. Unwilling to risk moving on without a drink (he had seen lands go from fertile to deserted in mere miles), he approached slowly and did his best not to make a great deal of noise.

Yet as he leaned down and lapped at the cool current, his eyes went sidelong and caught sight of all the peculiar things the male carried with him - baskets, random trinkets, and.. what even was that? His head drew up from the surface but his eyes remained locked on the drum, studying it. Even if the other male was violent, that thing would slow him down. Concluding he could outrun him if he needed to, he risked speaking up.

"Excuse me," his voice raised above the babbling stream, "but what is it that you have there?"

At first the words had gone right over his head and he appeared to be lost in thought, but when his eyes turned up to peer at the individual it was like he caught up. Truth be told he wouldn't have been able to say what he was even in thought about - life was good.

"Hm?" Ali made a small sound that suggested he finally registered that someone was addressing him and then he broke into a toothy grin. "Oh this?" He straightened himself out and gestured to the instrument with his paw. "This is a drum from the Nchi`mahadhi." The pride wouldn't have gone unnoticed by any it shone through so much in his words.

"You haven't seen one before?" To suggest that was a surprise to him and yet he had been in the same situation not long ago himself. Settling in just as the sun was setting only to be disturbed by the methodical beating of a drum and the chant to accompany it. The first time seeing the pride had been the most memorable although some memories fought for that right by now. "The pride there works with some gorillas to fashion these nifty devices. They make a wonderful sound."

Bovu's gaze seemed to get only more and more confused and curious as the other rogue (was he even a rogue?) explained what it was.

"A.. drum?" The word felt awkward on his tongue as he spoke it, at once foreign and too short for something that was obviously beyond the work of a lion. Bovu sat himself down slowly, content in the thought that his other male was not terribly dangerous, and focused his attention more directly on the instrument. Truth be told, he had never even met a gorilla but he thought he remembered stories one of the slaves had told - great, huge things with paws that held things.

"So it makes music?" His brows were still drawn into a confused line, but he seemed to be slowly processing what he was being told. "My pride wasn't much for music, I'm afraid. They weren't much for fun at all."

Music. It was something that enriched the lions life like nothing else. The magic of hearing the Nchi'mahadhi as he walked the horizon to return there chanting, beating their drums, and the strong pounding of dancers made his heart swell. "It does, it makes music." Ali made no hesitation in removing the article and beating it awkwardly with his paw. The sound it made wasn't terrific, but it was certainly not awful.

"Of course I have no practice and likely no talent.. but you get the idea." A laugh rumbled it's way from the lion and he sighed following. "If you ever are granted an opportunity to go there, the pride is the Nchi'mahadhi." He offered the name freely, had the lion posed a threat this conversation wouldn't be happening. Curious minds often bonded though and this was one of those cases.

"Go on, why don't you give it a wack yourself?"

Ali offered the drum to the lion and drew back his paw. "It's very sturdy, you won't do much damage to it.. unless that's what you would like to do of course." A small trickle of concern dripped in his mind as he realized he had handed such a precious item to a stranger, but his curiosity of how the other might react struck him as an opportune moment to see how those without musical familiarity reacted to the art.

The lion was peculiar. That was Bovu's first impression and, honestly, peculiar was putting it lightly. He had never heard of a Nicky-madadally or whatever in the world he was talking about but the drum, well, the drum he could sort of understand. It made a fun sound.

"Uh, yeah - okay. I guess."

Trying his best not to let a frown pull at his dark jowls, the striped male took a few hesitant steps forward and raised a single paw above the stretched canvas top of the thing. He went to let it fall but paused, then raised his paw higher - no, wait - he lowered it once more. This was such.. an odd thing to be doing. Convinced he was going to mess something up, he finally let his paw fly and it rebounded with a semi-disappointing 'thunk' off of the surface. He let it fall again, a couple of times in quick procession, before his hesitant frown relaxed and became a bit more pleasant.

"Oh, it's.. sort of like when acorns fall on a hollow log. I get it."

Ali held himself together, but truth be told he was ready to burst at the seams with laughter. The lion before him was so far out of his element that it had become amusing to watch. Had he known there would be entertainment today he'd have thought to prepare a snack. He felt his heart flutter as the lion raised and lowered his paw, clearly unsure of what to do, but not so much as to take it away.

Thunk.

"There you go." Of course the first strike was underwhelming, but the lion didn't let that bother him. Instead he gave the drum a few more good wacks before his face relaxed into something a little less stressed looking. "Precisely!" He nearly jumped up with the exclamation. "I've never thought of it that way, only perhaps in the way a brook babbles or an ocean whispers." As he described them he grew more hushed and clearly was lost in his own thoughts, but he was quickly brought back to reality.

"Would you like to give it a few more go's?" He offered warmly.
