Boroughbridge

Boroughbridge is a small town of roughly 3400 residents located in North Yorkshire, England. It is about 16 miles (26 km) northwest of York. The town originated as a Roman settlement and is noted for its 'Devil's Arrows'; three standing stones or 'menhirs' erected during the Bronze Age. There were initially four stones, but one is said to have been dug up by treasure hunters. The Battle of Boroughbridge was fought in the town during during the reign of King Edward II in 1322. It resulted in the defeat and execution of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, his most powerful rival at the time. The town contains both a primary and secondary school.
