Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire, England, located in the East Midlands. The town is on the river Nene, roughly 60 miles (97 km) northwest of London and 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Birmingham. It is one of the largest towns in the UK, with a population of about 226,000. In the Middle Ages the town was often a seat of Parliament at Northampton Castle, one of the famous Norman castles of England. It was also the site of two medieval Battles of Northampton, with one in 1264 and the second in 1460. During the English Civil War, the town supported the Roundheads, leading to its destruction being ordered by King Charles II. It is also suffered a Great Fire of Northampton, which leveled most of the town in 1675. The town was eventually rebuilt and became a centre for footwear and leather manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. Northampton is home to the University of Northampton, 50 primary schools, and 8 secondary schools.
