Reading is the county town of Berkshire, England, with a population of about 318,000. The town lies in the Thames Valley at the confluence of the River Thames and the River Kennet. It is 40 miles (64 km) west of London. Reading dates back to the 8th century, where it was the site of Reading Abbey, one of the richest monasteries in medieval England. The town lay under siege during the English Civil War and played a pivotal role in the 'Glorious Revolution' which overthrew Catholic King James II in 1688, replacing him with a Protestant monarch. From the 18 century onward Reading became known for its brewing and manufacturing trade. It has been a top economic area in the UK since the early 2000s. Reading School, founded in 1125, is the sixteenth oldest school in England.
