Swindon is a town located in the county of Wiltshire, England, between the cities of Bristol (to the west) and Cardiff (to the east). It has a population of roughly 182,441 people. It originated as an Anglo-Saxon settlement atop a limestone hill, and was a small market town until the 1840s. During the Industrial Revolution the town expanded and the population surged. The town has mild winters and cool summers. Swindon has a notable Polish community that emerged out of refugees from the Second World War. The Swindon Festival of Literature is held in town every May. Residents of Swindon are called Swindonians.
