Tonbridge is a town located in the English county of Kent, on the River Medway. It has a population of roughly 40,356. Until 1870, the town's name was recorded as Tunbridge, before it was changed to avoid confusion with another town. Tonbridge Castle is a notable historical landmark and tourist attraction, built in the 11th century. The famous Tonbridge School was chartered by King Edward VI in 1552, intended to educate the sons of the gentry and land-owning farmers. Major industries include light engineering, printing and publishing, distribution and financial services. Tonbridge has a fairly mild climate year-round, although it occasionally snows in the winter.
