Ojai felt completely out of her element, but something in her told her to at least try this year. What harm could it bring? This was a friendly competition, and she did want to win, to bring some honor and joy to her parents and family.

Still, part of her was a little mixed on having to duel one of her fellow clan members from the start. She understood it, but...she had a soft heart, in all fairness.

"Ah...hello," she said, not too familiar with him but recognized him well enough. "Let us both do well...!"

When Kumul had heard about the duels he was excited. It was something that reminded him of home, but friendlier, like a spar. Something between friends, but not for survival. It was a strange change, but a very welcome one. The sandy lion was glad he no longer had to fight for his life, but he hadn't gotten lazy in his time here.

Not yet at least.

He gave a small smile and nod to the other lioness. "Hello," He returned her greeting. The other lioness seemed soft. He'd definitely go easy on her. They were of the same clan after all, and clan was important. At least, it used to be, but it seemed important here as well, just in a different way.

"I'm sure we'll both do well. Shall we begin?"

"Ah...yes!" she said, not sure on how she should take the first strike. Was he to go first, and she react? This was very different from any bit of hunting she had ever done, and was trying to figure out the best way to approach the rest of this.

Please let her entering this duel be the one single time she followed her impulses; she should have thought this through better.

So she stood a bit awkwardly, trying to mentally pat herself into focus.

((a very polite duel))

Kumul resolved to wait for the other to make her first strike. He wasn't sure how she would attack or how fast she was. It was always good to access an opponent before fighting.

That, and he wanted to give her at least a fighting chance. Perhaps allowing her to go first would help that. He wasn't sure what the outcome of the duel would be. He had no issues with attacking another, but Ojai wouldn't hurt him too badly if she managed to get a hit in.

"Whenever you're ready to begin."

"Right, yes!"

Well, this was off to a great start. Taking another slow, deep breath, Ojai reminded herself that she could do this. And if she lost? At least she had tried! The pool seemed a bit small this year, so at least she could boast of some level of bravery to come out here, even if it was just to make a fool of herself in front of her own clan.

She took the first move, aiming for a strike against her opponent. She let out a bit of a grunt as she swung a paw towards his broad shoulder, feeling more determination creep through her mind as she began to get into the momentum of this duel.

And...she managed to get a hit in! The thrill of contact nearly made her tail curl in glee.

Kumul felt the hit on his shoulder. It didn't hurt. He didn't really expect it to. Ojai reminded him especially of Bozkir when he was a young cub and first learning how to fight. She was probably around the same age too.

She was an adult though, and didn't need any of the coddling a cub did. He pulled back a little and went for his own strike, swiping at her but missing. On purpose? Clumsy? Who knows, but he missed, and that was the whole point of it.

He watched for her next strike.

The adrenaline rush kept her moving, and her instincts told her to not sit still and enjoy her small won victory. She felt her paws grow a bit sluggish as she tried to avoid his return him, and felt the shift of air as he did indeed miss. Part of her was please, and another was wondering if he was going a bit too soft on her...but perhaps he just wanted to let her lower her guard?

Ojai wasn't one for mind games, let alone dueling, but she wasn't going to get any better if she let herself overthink anything.

So instead of thinking out her next strike, she just...went for it. And was rather shocked that she hit him...again!

"Ah!" she blurted out like a minor idiot, but she was surprised.

Well, two strikes. Only one more, and he'd be out, but he didn't really mind so much. It felt different, now that he wasn't fighting for his life. There wasn't that adrenaline rush, and he didn't want to hurt anyone.

He smiled a little bit at her surprise.

Still, he had to get at least one hit in, otherwise he was sure his wife would tease him. He lunged forward, and aimed for her shoulder.

The tap had some force behind it, and although it was a bit jarring, she did have to appreciate the obvious strength that he was holding back while he dueled her. The respect she felt he showed her, as well as taking it seriously for the ceremony, was rather...touching?

She didn't know how to explain it, but she felt appreciation flowing through her veins just as strongly as the adrenaline that kept her moving.

Ojai acknowledged the point that her opponent had struck, but she herself decided to swirl her paws around, feeling confident that her last attempt would make contact. This time she aimed for his hip, a clean hit that was better executed than her first. It may have just been one match, but she already felt like she had learned from him.

Three hits was all it took, and she offered a respectful bow to Kumul. "T-thank you," she said, her voice a bit breathless.

With the final hit, Kumul accepted his defeat. He gave Ojai a kind smile. He didn't expect the outcome when he first walked into this, but seeing how it turned out now he wasn't truly surprised by it. His days of fighting for his life were over, and this little competition was fun instead of terrifying.

"Thank you as well," He told her sincerely. It was a nice change, one that finally made him feel completely at home here. "That was a good fight. I look forward to see how far you go in this."
