County Kilkenny is a county in South East Ireland, named after the city of Kilkenny which is its county town. The county was based on the historic Gaelic kingdom of Ossory (Osraighe), which was co-terminus with the Diocese of Ossory. Kilkenny is the 16th largest of the traditional 32 Counties of Ireland in area and the 21st largest in terms of population. It has a population of roughly 100,000 people. The main rivers in County Kilkenny, called the Three Sisters, are the Nore, Barrow and Suir. Hurling, horse racing, and golf are the dominant sports in the county.
