「PERSONALITY」

Upon meeting Ishmael for the first time one might only see his flaws. He is stubborn, hates being dirty, and doesn't like change. Ishmael resents the idea of not knowing what is happening. Order is dear to him. While he doesn't rely on routine or necessarily have one, Ishmael just likes knowing how his day is going to go. He doesn't do well when the sudden happens. He can be closed off when overwhelmed and also curt. Unfortunately, his flaws appear more often than his virtues, as Ishmael has a hard time opening up to others. He doesn't connect easily with others and is almost afraid to try to. He doesn't want to risk rejection or being hurt. He can be snarky and sassy to those he dislikes as well.

If you can get him to open up you'll find he's caring and protective. He is the kind to do small things for others in a way where you might not notice it. He doesn't care about being credited for his good deeds. He doesn't really have an ego, honestly. If he cares about you he'll just want to do right by you and often you won't even notice. Ishmael is also aggressively protective. While he's an incredibly quiet pony he can and will get physically involved if someone he cares for is in danger. Ishmael throws his own safety to the wind and will use silent force to protect his loved ones.

Ishmael is afraid of the surface. He spends most of his time underwater where he perceives he's safe. Not many things can follow him into the water. He's stronger in the water as well. Really he can't imagine why it wouldn't be safer to just... stay underwater. However, he knows that isn't healthy. He's cutting out an entire half of the world and he knows he shouldn't. He's struggling to get over his fear of the above world. When asked why he's afraid of the surface his answer is quick; there are more creatures and ponies who live above water than under. There are more chances of danger and pain.

He's a romantic, although he'd die before admitting it. He always wondered if there really is someone for everyone. While he isn't the kind to be incredibly loud about his affections he is the kind who would enjoy a good and quiet snuggle. He's also prone to giving small gifts and quiet nuzzles here and there.

「BIOGRAPHY」

Born to two Aquatics, Ishmael was welcomed warmly. He wasn't planned but both his parents didn't hate the idea of having children. Luckily, his parents were fairly good ponies and his infant years were personally uneventful.

Unfortunately, his parents couldn't agree how to raise Ishmael. One parent wanted to keep him underwater until he was an adult while the other thought Ishmael needed to explore the surface eventually. This led to tension, but as an infant he never was involved in it.

His parents divorced when he became a foal. Sadly, the parent who wanted him to explore the surface moved out and he was left with the other one. The parent who raised him often spoke of how the surface was dangerous. There were, in their eyes, more dangers above then below. Ishmael wasn't exactly taught to fear the surface, but his parent attempted to ensure he was cautious. Ishmael took this further than it needed to be. He himself developed a fear of the surface.

He didn't make many friends as a foal. He spent most of his time exploring the depths of the underwater and collecting trinkets. He liked shiny rocks and gems and would decorate his home with them. He also enjoyed learning about the culture of his kind. The surface was never something he thought he'd experience. He was happy underwater.

But eventually the surface became something on the edge of his mind constantly. It was there and he hadn't seen it. While that had been willing, Ishmael began to doubt his reasoning. Why should he stay hidden from the entire world? He was scared, sure, but could he comfortably live not knowing the other side of the world?

He met Queeqeg at this time. Another Aquatic visited his home and spotted the broody fish. They instantly became friends. While Ishmael could never pinpoint why he liked Quee, the other Aquatic was just... understanding. Quee became his first friend, and the reason he eventually dragged himself to the surface. Invited to see the nearest city, Ishmael finally met the surface. It was terrifying. He didn't get far from his home before he instantly ran back into the water. Quee spent months helping Ishmael until, finally, Ishmael tried again.

After that point he took more trips out of his underwater home. It was scary, but slowly he became adjusted to the point it just felt mildly uncomfortable. Quee dragged him around constantly and Ishmael complained every time. One of these adventures led to him meeting her, though; Raripila.

Taken to a festival, Quee ran off to meet their crush and left Ishmael alone. He stumbled upon another Aquatic. Small, sweet, and gentle, this Aquatic was named Raripila, and she instantly caught his breath. Something about her lit his system. She was the sweetest pony he had ever met and Ishmael was smitten.

Now he is busy trying to navigate these feelings. Should he tell her? Will she respond positively?

Quee is helping Ishmael overcome their anxiety about the surface. Quee is also at times annoying and very invasive, but Ishmael is fond of them. He won't admit it though.
