[Split Personality]

Stellaluna had gone mute not soon after the rein of the pride had it’s changes. She silently stepped down from her position as ‘shaman’ and took the role of a lady and lived her life in silence. A lot of speculation was that the great lion took her voice to preserve things from the new king. Some gossiped she had her tongue removed after she threatened his power. Yet all anyoneknee was that she didn’t speak anymore.

She was at the waters edge, thinking deeply about the world they were in and how things were absolutely unusual and frightening. The moon. The weather. Everything was strange and suspicious.

She sighed softly, curling her tail over her hind legs and closing her eyes. It was near midnight.l. Her favorite time to be out.

Iah had been doing his usual rounds for the night. He was a deligsnyt guard and spent many nights doing his shift... without a word or thought other than those that pertained to his duties. His gray eyes were ever so narrowed as he scouted every suspicious sound... every scent and every odd shap3d paw print. He was nearing the water source of the pride...

When he spotted Stellaluna.

He had not spoken to her much since the fall of their past king. He knew that had been a hard time in her life. She had stepped down from her position as the interpreter of the gods... to a lady. She had also stopped talking.

He stood nad observed her for a moment

Stella had not noticed the guard and had been busy studying the waters surface and moon that reflected from it. She sighed softly and blowed her lilac eyes. She used to interpreted ‘the great lions’ will and over time that ability faded... perhaps he stole her voice for the events past.

She felt a pain grab in her throat for a moment. No one felt ill of her disicion to step down. Yet she did. She took care to never let anyone else see. She always maintained a demeanor to maintain her honor.

She sniffled slightly. She sighed and swallowed the knot in her throat.

Iah remembered leading her away from the craziness that was happening and hiding with her amongst the thornery. He remembered how she felt that night and that her safety was of the upmost importance... during the usurgence. They didn’t know if the new king would kill her and replace her with the apprentice in order to gain more control.

Yet he had not needed too... she had stepped down willingly.
He say the flash of of emotion her face and was taken back by it. She hadn’t
T spoken since she became a lady and she certainly hadn’tt shed a tear about it... at least not in front of anyone.

He stepped forward and cleared his throat.

“Stellaluna?”

Stella startled she Iah announced his presence. Her eyes flashed upwards and relaxed the moment she saw who it was. She rubbed her nose with her paw and tried to hide the pained look on her face. She nodded her head to him in greeting.

She had learned to communicate in different ways without her voice long ago.

She nodded again... more like s greeting such as hello”

Her eyes caught something behind her in the waters glimmering surface but she ignored it. Surely it was a bird or something... she didn’t think anything of it.

Iah sighed. Just once it would be nice to hea r her speak aloud again. He duobted it would ever happen. He trotted down too her from the path and nodded his head to her as well. “Stellaluna it is late... why are you out?” He asked and then rolled his eyes at himself,

“Oh never mind... that was dumb of me to ask... either way I am guessing it is to admire the moon but...” he stopped and gazed behind Stella... he swore he saw something in the lake... he blinked...

“I uh... I...” he stammered... he couldn’t really see anything after the first glance... he walked next to her and felt the hairs on his neck stand up.

Stellaluna looked a bit confused and made a sound in her throat in question of Iah's strange behavior. She turned to look in the direction in which Iah was looking and her forehead furrowed. She had thought she had seen a glean on the surface of the water but... had ignored it but now Iah was acting like he seen something..

She flicked her ears in the direction of the lake. She could see Iah was on his guard and it made her a little frightened. Her pale eyes blinked as she took a small step closer to her friend.


There is something in the water I think... She thought to herself. She swallowed the lump in her throat.


Her own hairs were standing on end as she tried to distinguish what was water glistening against the moonlight or possible something else... It could be a Hippo but how would it have gotten up here?

Iah simply stared into the water, his fur on end and his muscles at the ready. He was prepared in case something jumped out at them and he would have to defend his friend. His brown eyes narrowed as he took a step closer to his companion.

“Stay behind me... there’s something in the lake... I can’t see it but I... saw a glimpse... or a glimmer...” he mumbled... his eyes were fixed on the waters surface.

“I think if we Just back up slowly....”

Stella was in no mood to hesitate against Iah’s words. She nodded slowly and turned quickly and began to hrry away from the lake. This was not the time to even question things. After the odd occursnces lately she had no desire to stay and see what lay in wait in the water.

Iah quickly followed suit, not without turning one final time to gaze st the lake. He still could see nothing.

He wasn’t in the mood to find out. He followed Stella back to her home den and made sure his friend was okay; before returning to his duties and doing his best to avoid the lake until he could muster up the bravery to maybe investigate again.
