At least the day started well, however much like any other average day for Lupus it went downhill rather quickly. Immediately after grabbing Masako and leaving he found something that caught his eye off to the side; a barely visible glint of a blade. Knowing it would be better to have Masako go ahead without him he made up a lame excuse about having to use the bathroom and she didn't need to wait. Slipping away into an alleyway he began walking quickly, curling his body inwards slightly to give the appearance of a timid person. After merely ten steps into the alley the sound of air being sliced through rang in his ears. With minimal movement he shifted his body to the side; allowing the blade to miss his throat barely, a deceptively fast movement and Lupus' hand blurred forward to grasp the mans wrist in an ironclad grip. However the man was somewhat capable and without a sound he retrieved another dagger before stabbing it up into Lupus' ribs, trying to pierce the mans heart. His hopes would be crushed however when instead of reacting at all the giant of a man merely continued on with his defensive assault.

Stepping forward Lupus shoulder slammed the man in the sternum with the force of a truck, audible bone crunching could be heard as the dagger slowly fell from his hand to clank on the ground. Pained gasping sounds barely came from the man before Lupus gave another powerful step forward. The muscles along his arm grasping the wrist of the man bulged and rippled like steel cords before he flung the assassin out of the alleyway and into the streets. Bending his knees he launched into the air after the man before landing with a deafening boom with his knee on his chest. "Who sent you after us? Was I the target or was Masako?" Though he spoke in a low voice, to the man it was as loud as thunder clapping within his eardrums. Seeing his mouth moving in a strange way as if trying to dislodge something, Lupus snorted in amusement before reaching forward and snapping the mans neck resolutely. Standing up fully he gripped the would-be assassins broken neck to carry him along. Glancing around at the civilians around him he gave an apologetic bow before slowly trudging his way along to the apartment complex.

After a few minutes of walking he arrived at the apartment where Masako and Liliya were speaking at the top of the steps. Giving a grunt he began walking up the steps before letting the corpse drop behind him atop the steps. With a pained groan he ripped the dagger from his ribs before throwing it down into the wood. Next he spoke in a grave tone directed towards them, reaching into his backpack to look for something to wrap his wound even as it was slowly closing up being near Masako. "Apparently there's a hit out on either our party or one of us. That trash was waiting for us on our way here, I tried interrogating him but he went for something in his mouth so I did what I had to." With a shake of his head he set his pack down next to him, leaning back against the railing.

Usugi of the Wind and Waves → An ancient Gunbai of nightmarish origin, Usugi is believed to have been forged in the depths of a temple where the mad priest led hundreds to their deaths in order to provide raw materials for its creation. Whether or not this is true is difficult to say at best, given none were meant to have survived, but the pale white leather that covers the faces of the weapon definitely do look and feel like stretched human flesh. With the steel handle twisted and cast in such a way that it looks like human faces are screaming out from the shaft and the bladded edge of the Gunbai seeming to reflect light in odd, twisted ways it is clear that whatever its origins it was clearly designed for fear. Yet the truly horrific parts come when Usugi is awoken, caused by fifty [50] Chakra or Stamina points being spent as a sacrifice to the thing that guards within.
tab The Howling Shards ► Water and wind, fire, earth and lightning powers controlled by the wielder find their techniques altered thematically when used alongside this weapon. Wind howls with the screams of the dead and damned, with fire morphing into the expressions of those who died in fire. Water is blacker than sin and carries with it the reek of fetid blood while electricity snarles into demonic forms. The earth, tormented by its power, is black and rotted with decay, carrying with it the sweet stench of death. In effect techniques being used inspire a negative effect, a chilling, dark energy that borders the unholy power of corruption. C - ranked Shadow damage is constantly applied alongside the damage of the attacks, something that bypasses Defense and does half again [50% More] more Durability damage than before. This effect lasts for three [3] posts, with an upkeep of 30 Chakra or Stamina per post after.
tab The Crawling Chaos ► Use of this weapon comes at a cost as the mind begins to rot with each post sustaining the evil power of Usagi. For every three [3] posts being used apply one [1] point of Spiritual corruption upon the body. At every ten [10] points of Corruption the body gains an Echo Intrusion affliction. These Intrusions alter the physical body and emotional state of the figure in some way, while providing a bonus in its place. These may be submitted as "custom techniques", though in all cases there is a negative as equal in strength as the positive, and will include physical alterations.

Kira looked at her his blue green eyes narrowing at her comprimise. While he loathed taking orders from anyone to begin with, it was increase two fold if it was her. However he thought what it was worth as he said, "Very well... I am asking for your help and expertise, the least I could do is listen to commands... I was hoping to get some new armor after I destroyed my old one but if tomorrow is the earliest then I'll be sure to rest tonight" With that the hard part of the conversation was over before he looked to the pouch of coins he had in his hand and sighed slightly in annoyance and relief that he had secured her help. However:

"I understand you dont want money but take this at least as a sort of... Thanks" Slowly he gently took one of Zuu's hands and placed the coin pouch into it, "I feel you're at least owed that much

Leaned against a wall, the green-haired female was adjusting the straps on her shield. In a squatting position, her shield rested between her thighs and her arm. Her spear was resting by her on the wall itself. Bright blues were gently scanning for any wear and tear as she was doing her best to take care of it. It was then, a massive hunk of foot passed by her as she paused in her actions. Slowly, her head moved up as her jaw was slowly opened agape. This man was huge! He reminded her of home! There was a big man back home! Hastily, she got up and stumbled to finish adjusting the straps. Once they were adjusted, there were some loud noises. A fight? At the ready, her hand lightly grasped the spear as she crouched down slightly, aiming to have the shield to protect her well if she was attacked by something else. No. Instead, it was this man attacking someone in the ally. She smiled as he succeeded in killing the enemy and even dragged along with him! He was in every way, a Viking! Surely he was going to save the body to get the skull and clean it out good, use it as a cup! The trick was doing it just right and sealing up certain areas so the mead won't leak.

Mead. She missed home but this man! As he dragged the body past her, she followed, wondering if he didn't see her? Maybe he was just a bit too tall. Or she wasn't worthy in his sight to be seen as a comrade just yet. They had to be comrades. Made sure she can be seen, she looked up at the massive man, "Good victory!" She praised, "You saved skull! Good cup for drinks!" They would notice that this was not her native tongue but she was picking up as fast as she could and much as possible.

While normally the small and light Masako bumping into Liliya wouldn't have resulted in the much sturdier woman also falling down, she was rather distracted to say the least, and thus Liliya Bridge went falling down, falling down, the fair lady. In typical Masako fashion she would quickly spring back to her feet like the little ball of energy that she was and would try her damnedest to help Liliya up to her feet which would cause a soft chuckle to escape from the white haired female's lips. Taking her friend's hand, she would use her assistance to get up before brushing herself off, cleaning off any dirt or grime that may have stuck to her from the fall.

It's fine and I'm okay. Are you? Feeling a bit weird about immediately switched the topic to something else after asking her if she was okay, Liliya opted to try and smooth the transition by pointing to the piece of paper attached to the door. I was lost in my own train of thought reading that; it would seem that we have been retasked to another mission. While it's simple to understand, I was more or less having a mental debate with myself in a one-sided rant about how I was forced to rush my creations for the last mission only to get a new missions with completely different directives. I'm sorry for spacing out like that.

Around this time is when Lupus had arrived, walking up the stairs with a.. gift, a trophy, or just simply evidence in tow. Before she could even ask any questions the wolf-halfy would remove the dagger from his body and go into a spiel about what had occurred. Kneeling down, Liliya would pick up the dagger and examine it for any details, and upon finding literally nothing she was about to pocket the item to sell for some coin but before she could do so the weapon began to dematerialize right in front of her eyes. It would seem that whoever the diety supervisors of this world wasn't about to let her cheat the system.

Hah, that's fine. Not sure what we did to warrant such a thing, but it they have a death wish then so be it. Anyways, I should have some dirt-.. somewhat clean rags inside if you want to clean yourself up. From below a stranger would call out, addressing Lupus on his souvenir in somewhat broken common, but definitely understandable. Standing up and cleaning her hands on her skirt, Liliya turned towards the door and removed the request from it had Masako not already done so, and begin to proceed inside.

You can invite your admirer in for tea if you want, we got time while we decide on what to do. The comment itself was neutral, as well as the tone it was spoken in, which was perhaps a bit weird considering how she must have been feeling about what she discussed with Masako before. Regardless, she began to brew some tea.

To say she slept fitfully would do a disservice both to Meissa's training and to just how poorly she actually slept. In fact, when she woke up at the crack of down, it felt like she hadn't gotten any sleep at all; even so, her training had kept her in that shallow state of sleep consistently, so it wasn't fitful. She had to settle for being phenomenally groggy in a regular way.

As she peeled herself off the floor, the now-young lady could feel just how stiff she'd gotten overnight. Or maybe it was a side-effect of being imprisoned in crystal for however many centuries that had been, it was hard to say. She eyed the food she'd brought with her for a moment before deciding to do some light training to wake herself up. First was flexibility, second was mobility, third was striking. In that exact order. She did her stretches, some movement with her pack on, then ran through a few of the martial arts forms she'd had drilled into her so many years ago now. Every step along the way, she felt her fatigue and a total lack of physical training holding her movements back.

She caught her breath. Simple E-Rank training that she used to do every morning with breakfast was taking all she had. Her frustration at this development was intense. First, she was unable to use any of the Ninjutsu she had developed over her long life, but on top of that she was also completely useless at Taijutsu. It was like her younger body had absolutely none of the training she'd had at that age. Rage bubbled up inside her and was channeled into strikes surpassing the previous ones. Her muscles burned and her bones popped, but she didn't stop until she could scarcely hold herself up anymore. Then she took a break.

Eating too much while training wasn't a great idea at this level of fitness, so she settled for water. Before she was fully ready to continue--indeed, before she had even fully caught her breath--she started pushing herself again. E-Rank mobility was a pittance, absolutely nothing in a world where she was uncertain of the dangers. D-Rank was pushing it, but she needed to push it if she wanted to be confident about her chances of surviving. What was more, she forced herself to move as quietly as possible while training this way, which had the nice side-effect of not annoying the neighbors. Her body remembered how to move quietly, at least.

She was working herself into the ground, that was for sure. Even as she was trying to catch her breath from the last training, she was already moving on to basic senbon throwing forms. She wasn't actually launching the things out of a desire not to damage the apartment, but every movement up to that point was painstakingly recreated.

That muscle memory was gone, too. She noted with no small amount of frustration that her fingers didn't move how she was used to and forced herself to move up in difficulty level out of spite. E-Rank, D-Rank, she'd probably go up to S-Rank if she thought this new (old?) body could handle it. But, as things stood, she could hardly feel her arms once she was done with even D-Rank, so she was forced to stop. She took some time to hydrate and eat after she caught her breath, then poured herself into the shower. Once she was clean herself, she made sure to clean the sweat out of her clothes, hung them up to dry in the bathroom, then found a corner away from any windows to sleep. This time, at least, she slept well.

We need food, rent money, and hopefully better parts for your equipment." Masako brushed herself off and was about to enter the apartment when she heard the thunderous footsteps of Lupus approaching. It was a wonder that half the city couldn't hear him coming.

Masako could only groan with disappointment as Lupus had somehow found another body to carry home for no reason. His obsession with dead bodies was quite something. As the group's Physician, Masako should have been the one with an obsession for dead bodies. "You didn't need to bring the body back with you. Just a description would have done fine. The Landlord already wants to evict us and now we have to explain blood on the stairs and the smell of a dead body." Masako began to stress herself out wondering how she would explain this latest exploit.

"Figure out some way to take care of that body before you come inside. And clean up before you come inside." Masako turned and entered the apartment, leaving Lupus, Liliya, and the mysterious stranger to handle the body. The strange girl seemed to mention something about using the skull as a cup as she left.

                                                                              Techniques Used:

                                                                              Passive:
Saintly Presence: This ability borrows from Masako's ability to heal simply by touching. Combining her ability to heal on touch and the passive aura that she naturally radiates at all times, Masako emits a healing mist within the radius of her aura. This healing mist is relatively weak at E rank, only numbing small bruises and taking the sting off cuts. At every rank the healing power of the aura slowly increases. By B Rank, the aura can close cuts and heal minor sprains. This is not an instant heal but takes time and exposure to the aura to heal. This ability also enhances the feeling of safety and peace created by the aura, reducing the effect that techniques that cause fear or terror by 1/2 rank.
Forest Princess: Everywhere Masako goes, she passively creates small amounts of plant life, even on surfaces that would normally not support it, such as metal or stone. This cannot be used to grow plant matter on objects created by an opponents own mana. This skill in essence allows Masako to have a source of natural materials at all time. This only creates small amounts of flora such as a patch of grass or a few flowers.
Forest Princess II: Masako's ability to speak with sprites and other friendly spirits is partially expanded to animals. While she cannot directly communicate with animals, she can convey thoughts and feelings to them. This makes animals and other similar creatures less likely to attack her. This can also be used to limited effect to communicate with An Teaghlach with varying degrees of success.
Inexplicable Luck: Once per battle or once every 4 posts outside of combat, Masako experiences a brief moment of inexplicable luck where whatever she attempts has a greater chance to succeed or increases the yield of an action. This action can also manifest in the form of actions, such as being able to dodge an attack that would normally land, etc. This also grants Masako a guaranteed chance to always gather at least 1 item per attempt even at a 0 skill level.
Human Potential: Masako gains an additional Discipline Point at C Rank.
Truth is Stranger Than Fiction: Often times in the pursuit of the truth, Inquisitors find themselves in the wackiest of places. It has often been said that truth can be stranger than fiction and this is no exception. At any time during any encounter, there is a chance for the encounter to become a "Wacky Encounter" which drastically changes the environment or NPCs in the area, often with hilarious results. This is randomly triggered by the DM as they see fit. Wacky Encounters generally include loot or items that would otherwise be unobtainable and always give at least one [1] item to the party, whether or not the item is useful is another matter. Wacky Encounters can be anything from discovering a random traveling circus in a dungeon to fighting a horde of cannibal dwarfs wearing dresses. The sky is the limit.
Divine Innocence: At all times, Masako radiates an aura of pure innocence and peace. This aura makes it all but impossible to want to attack her. Even if an individual were able to overcome the effects of the aura, all of their abilities used against Masako would be reduced in strength by one rank. The aura comes with a catch however. As with all medical professionals, Masako is sworn to do no harm and as such, she cannot attack while the aura is up unless an attack of C-Rank or higher is targeted against her, and only within 2 posts of the offending attack. After this two post timer, the aura is once again at full power and must be re-triggered.
Saint: The Saint path grants the ability to heal with a touch, something relatively rare in the Path of the Medic. No handsigns, no magic circles, no rituals, just a touch to activate. The Saint is granted one [1] spell per Experience Rank, beginning at E - rank, that can be used without paying a cost. This is specific to Healing spells that have a positive effect. If, instead, the effect is Negative in nature, these Spells can be used at only half cost [1/2] without any weakening in strength or viability. The Saint gains an automatic aura that generates feelings of peace and safety (for those who favor positive, beneficial effects) or unease and danger (in those who favor negative, destructive effects). This aura can be suppressed and is not a technique in and of itself, instead merely being an outward manifestation of their dispositions. In other words it cannot force reactions, but can definitely influence them.
Researcher: Knowledge is power, and the Researcher represents the Path of those who truly understand that. A specialist in finding information in the most difficult of places, the Researcher is a master of the written word, able to crack codes and written/drawn riddles with equal ease. Some items defy knowledge and require a Decryption score to learn their secrets, ranging in scale from zero [0] to five [5], with the former representing anything that doesn’t currently have a score. Through research that takes one [1] post for every two [2] Encryption ratings, the Researcher is able to crack these secrets. Alternatively, they may use their own knowledge to Encrypt things, making it near impossible to break. The Researcher is able to Encrypt/Decrypt up to Level One [1] at D – rank, and the level increases for every experience Rank they possess. Furthermore, depending on the Researcher’s original choice, Illusions, Arcanist Spells, or other abilities that hide the truth of the written or artistic form will be one [1] rank less in strength when viewed by a researcher, with any spell they know gaining one [1] rank in strength if used to obscure. In favor of this, the Inquisitor gains four [4] Arcanist and Illusion spells per Experience Rank, though it must deal with either obscuring or revealing things.

But the release came quickly, and so, too, did the fury as she caught hold of herself long enough to realize that sleep was something she sorely lacked, and needed. Instead of saying anything else she simply nodded, stood, and moved towards the door with pouch in hand before stopping and looking back at him. "Morning. Southern Gates." It was all she could spare before she left, knowing that she was about to embark on a mission that would change her life forever.

鉄 ❉❉❉キラ {•} ヤマタ❉❉❉ 鉄

As she left to the door and gave the deadline for the launch point for the mission Kira merely nodded back towards her and went to close the door behind her. Once she was out of the apartment Kira sighed as he went back to his bedroom and slept for the next few hours. He knew at somepoint before the shops closed that he would need to ask for some armor. While it wouldn't fit him as it would if he had it wait for a week Kira knew the importance of just buying one off the forge to move on. He could make adjustments during rest stops in the field.

Towards the end of that evening Kira roused himself awake and yawned as he stretched his arms a bit. Going over to his pack he grabbed enough ryo that he figured would pay for the armor he would need and set forth to the market place. Though it would be great to see Karin again he knew this was more for business than pleasure. And so he went out the door making sure he locked his apartment up and headed for the Market district to see the blacksmiths.

User ImageMeissa woke up again after an unknown amount of time had passed, stretched, dressed, and then set about familiarizing herself with her apartment. It was simple and small, in direct contrast to the households she'd lived in previously. That said, this perfectly suited her current situation. She had nothing, so needed little space. She'd have to arrange for some sort of bedding if this were to become a more permanent arrangement, but for the time being, the floor was serviceable. She found some coins stacked neatly on the kitchen counter along with a note of welcome. She wasn't sure whether this was standard or if she was receiving special treatment due to her status as a Wakener, but she didn't much care.

The outline of an otter floated lazily through the main room, bringing the woman back to the supposed reality of her situation. She quickly fetched and donned her now-dried clothes, then sat down in the middle of the main room. Of the medium-related things she'd learned about, creating a shikigami was the only one of the fundamental pillars she hadn't yet investigated. The book had listed metal and wood as two common bases for such things, and while she liked the durability of metal more, she was much more familiar with wood. Short of scrapping part of the apartment for materials, she didn't have any decent wood on her, so she opted for an experiment: she'd attempt to use paper, just to see if it could serve the same purpose. If not, she'd just go to the market and grab something there.

First, she folded the paper a few times, giving it a vaguely animal form. She hadn't ever really gotten into origami, so it looked pretty terrible. She was pretty sure she knew some kids who'd done better, but no matter. Next, she set about building up a mana-based framework around the paper creature, giving it some of the same geometries that had been used in the creation of variable marbles in her previous life. From there, she operated by feel, fine-tuning her magical output to match how the array was responding.

Current Goal: Making a shikigami.

((Woops. S-Rank Hope/Generosity spirit, ahoy!))

Meissa felt an unfortunately familiar situation, but one that was at the same time incredibly nostalgic. Way back in the distant annals of history, she'd once gone fishing with her father. Everything was going great until she hooked something that didn't budge when she tried to pull it up. No matter what she tried, she couldn't get it out of the water, until she finally gave up and dove in to wrestle it up manually. By the time she got down there, the unseen fish was just a shadow receding into the murky depths, never to be seen again. This was exactly the same sort of strain, but spiritual instead of physical.

As her binding formula sank into the paper, she saw the crappy origami figure shudder, then affix itself into one spot. It wasn't deformed, but even so, it was like the paper was being held in place by a great weight.

So small.

The voice was big, but quiet. It entered her mind directly, swept through her head and fell out of her lips. She froze with a complete lack of understanding for only a moment before scooping up the paper and sprinting outside with it. She unfortunately didn't have time to address the pile-up of people outside, nor the bloody man and the person commenting about skull cups. Instead, she just sprinted straight past them until she was out in the open on the ground. The paper in her hands glowed with a soft light all the while.

That will do.

The clouds stirred overhead, taking on strange shapes. In the time it took Meissa to blink, a massive figure appeared, its gaze transfixed upon her. It brought one of its eyes down to get a better look at her, the eye itself being more than twice her size. She didn't need to look around to know that this thing was clearly visible.

This is a first. O summoner, tell me your name.

"Ba--" She caught herself. "Meissa. I must admit, you're not what I was expecting."

Mm. Pseudonyms are unbecoming. You are also not what I expected. Nor is this vessel, for that matter. I would commend the simplicity of this vessel's design if it had any taste.

Meissa leaned back to get a better view of her shikigami's body. It seemed to be the same simple, snakelike shape she'd folded the paper into, but it was so large it stretched into the clouds. A wispy, almost feathery pattern traced its length, pulsating gently. Underneath that, it looked like a chain of light, giving it the appearance of a constellation wrapped in a translucent skin. She swiveled her head back to look the sprite in the eye once more.

"Indeed, it doesn't seem to capture your grandeur very well. If I had to guess, your unrestrained form is more avian in nature." Her words were even, but in the back of her mind she was calculating her best escape route if things went south.

Something of that sort, perhaps. Tell me: What makes you think so?

"I was something of an artist in my previous life," Meissa answered truthfully. "It wasn't my main activity, but I was somewhat renowned with cloth, wood, and glass. The natural coloration of birds was a good teacher."

The spirit rumbled, the sound not unlike the rattle of shutters in a gale.

Very well. I will see how you choose to represent me in the future. Meissa, you may refer to me as Nok. For now, I shall follow.

With that, the monstrous constellation that called itself Nok rose up above the heads of the people on the road. After a moment's confusion, Meissa asked it to wait while she retrieved her things. She rushed back up to her apartment, grabbed her bag, and then dashed back out into the street. Without missing a beat, she took off in the direction of the gates, navigating based on her memory of the map she'd seen the previous day. The massive wind spirit followed her at a short distance, its tail shredding clouds as it went.

Aric marched through the marketplace with his iron greaves. The sound of their repetitive 'twung twung twung' echoed loud enough to pull the attention of everyone he passed by. A curt nod though and the bystanders returned to their everyday shopping. Likely assuming him to be just another high strung guard for all the confidence he carried himself with. Confidence that was funneled all into throwing himself at his task. His decision had been made: the war of the tear would wait. First, he had to find where that damned Iiliya.

His mind racing on where to even start his hunt; Aric almost missed the cries for attention coming from an alleyway. The stereotypical ‘damsel in distress’ he thought at first until his dark amber eyes set upon a feeble looking male in a chokehold against the wall. “Come on now Bennich. You don’t really think 'ere stupid, do ya? Just hand o'er what you owe and we can settle yah debt with Ivir right here and now. Noice and easy like.” The lanky man’s smooth tone of voice made Aric scowl. No matter how they tried to disguise themselves he could spot a shakedown when he saw one. An unfortunate trait he had learned whilst maneuvering through human populations.

Surmising up both of their forms with the eye of a fighter, Aric prepared himself for what could have come before he interrupted. “Hey.” A single word was delivered, but the calm force that it carried startled the two would-be muggers. Each of them turned to face the stragari and dropped their quarry in the process. Aric spared the man a sympathetic glance but couldn't afford to have his attention removed for too long. "Get. Lost." The words earned him a sarcastic sneer. "Nah nah, that ain't his it works 'ere mate. You don't just go 'round interfarein en other people's business loike dat. 'Ere rules Ya gotta follow." 'Yea rules!' Declared his excitable lackey. His small frame jumped from out behind the taller thief but hid behind him just as quickly once his course wore off.

"Guess I'm just made to be a rulebreaker." Aric smiled and dropped into a defensive stance. One foot placed back enough that he could both fall forward or back to make use of his weight. When it became clear that he wasn't going to back down the robbers grew unsure of themselves but moved in to save face. Unsparingly, the lanky man attacked first with a grapple. Initially leaving Aric surprised that he would choose to move at where the dragon had a clear advantage. Rather than catch him in a test of strength, Aric sprung backward. His instincts proved to be impeccable, as the robber’s goblin-like accomplice would have used the distraction to horizontally cut his abdomen wall. A drop like that would prevent him from using his size easily.

Knowing now that at least one of his opponents were armed put Aric on caution. Moving to put the shorter thief in front of his leader, Aric grabbed his wrist without fear of retaliation. His grip alone snapped the tiny bones and swiped the knife before it had even fallen to the ground. This set both of them reeling backward in fear. Martial training? Was this man actually a guard who was disguised or off duty? Aric could see the doubt in their eyes now. “Now then. I suggest you run.” Again the pair were provoked by the speech but knew too that any fair fight would result in their loss. So they took his opportunity and fled.

“Rotten bastards.” The stragari whispered under his breath before clapping forearms with the man who would have been their mark. “Greetings, I don’t think I caught your name before that unfortunate business with those muggers.” The anxiety lines on the stranger’s face deepened in a way that made Aric wonder if the man had ever truly known peace. “My name is Bennich. Ben, to my friends. B-but make no mistake, stranger. We are not friends.” The puzzlement at the bizarre reaction he received must have shown on his face because Bennich quickly followed up with more hasty words. “You think you did me a favor? Hah, that’s a laugh for sure. Those men will be back soon as you’re gone they will, and just where will that leave me? Knee deep in pig shite that’s where!”

Aric frowned in shock. He couldn’t deny the truth to the man’s words now that he thought about it, but he could never believe in a life that was so hopeless that he would rather trudge through it than accept the mercy of another passerby. “I... oh.” There were a number of responses that came to his tongue. Most of them snaps, as he imagined Iiliya would have done. Just cut your ties and move onto what was most important to you? It had its appeals, but even at the risk of losing more distance between him and the one-time lover; it was not in the stragari to give up on even a stranger. Something that perhaps crossed him so closely with the snake woman to begin with. Aric pulled Bennich into the folds of his chest with a single great arm. “Ben my lad. You and I are going to have a walk, and I am going to make sure that you will never have a problem with those men for as long as you live.”

Liliya had finished brewing the tea and began to set out what little tableware they had. Since only Masako and herself had entered the room so far, as she sat down she only poured a cup for the two of them, not wanting it to get cold for the others by the time they entered, whenever that may have been. Crossing one leg over the other, the large bosomed woman would begin to sip at the steaming liquid from her cup while she glanced at the paper that was attached to their door with the other. So, do you think we should do it then? It seems easy enough, but that was also what we thought last time before we ran into that ogre-subspecies or whatever you wish to call it. Liliya idly mused aloud to her bestest of friends while her orbs of red continued to scan the parchment, searching for potentially any missed clues or warnings. However time would pass, and they would run out of tea and with it time to make their decision. Masako was right in that they needed money, but, perhaps the others weren't quite up to it. That was fine however, as she would just be the workhorse in their stead. Standing up from her seat at the table Liliya would dress herself appropriately for the weather outside and make her leave. Meissa plodded up the steps to her apartment as a deep chill settled in for the night. As soon as she was inside, she dropped her bundle of wood, found an interior corner, and huddled up against her pack for the night. The stew she'd eaten at the restaurant had erased the day's tension in one fell swoop.

She awoke early the next morning and set about her day in typical fashion, starting with calisthenics, a slice of bread, and a piece of fruit. She'd be heading out again later in the day, but for now she wanted to create a better shikigami than the paper snake she'd been using. She searched through the bundle of wood she'd brought back from the forest for a suitable piece, then started picking away at it using a senbon. She'd have to find a better tool for carving eventually, but this was fine for now, she figured. She just needed something sturdier than paper.

The actual creation of the first one took a while. She wasn't used to working with senbon in this way, nor was she particularly skilled with the artistic side of woodworking to begin with. She chipped away at the stick until there was a small pile of wood shavings on the floor next to her. Gradually, the shape of a bird emerged from the wood. It was rough and only about as long as her middle finger, but she felt proud of it. In some vague, indescribable way, it reminded her of Nok. She worked it off of the rest of the stick, smoothed its rough edges as best she could, then placed it on the floor next to her. She made a mental note to ask around for sandpaper when she went looking for better tools later. Lastly, she pitched her wood shavings out the window.

Next came the process of investiture. Luckily, she didn't have anything in the way of furniture, so the apartment had plenty of space for her to work. Creating the magical array that facilitated the creation of a shikigami was simple due to experiences in her previous life. After that, it was just a matter of imbuing the energy into the figure she'd crafted. After a few minutes, the array faded and she took up her new shikigami. She'd gotten used to having a spirit around at all times, so the bird almost felt empty when she touched it. She contemplated her options briefly, then decided to call out to a spirit.

The spirit summoning was complete. Or at least, that's what Meissa assumed. She'd felt something enter the focus. An ethereal leaf was now sprouting from its beak, even, and yet she could hardly feel the spirit inside. She was expecting another grand appearance like Nok or Jata, but this spirit hardly seemed to have sentience. Could she use such a thing? Certainly, it was better than nothing, but she had doubts that it could actually pull off the things she wanted it to do. After not more than a moment's consideration, she banished it.

There had to be something wrong with the effigy she'd made. How else could she explain getting a huge creature like Nok and a clearly coherent spirit like Jata with a piece of folded paper but a virtual non-entity with the wooden effigy? Were the materials an issue? No, she had to be jumping to conclusions. She took a few minutes to hydrate herself and loosen up her stiff muscles before trying again. This time, she took her time calling out to the spirits in the area...
