After hours of pouring over scrolls, texts and other manuals to learn new spells from Kira had enough. His woulds seem to slowly ease themselves from the long winded read and he smiled softly and slowly picked himself up. Still having a few aches and pains Kira collected the texts that where given for him to study and made his way to the front of the hall. As he approached the receptionist Kira sighed at the amount of work studying had taken. It had been years since he had to actually learn something new from old scrolls and books. Placing the materials he had taken onto the counter Kira said to the clerk

Thank you, here are your texts back. have a good day.." It wasnt much but to Kira it was partly a great stepping stone to building 'people skills' The only thing he had to do now... Face karin's wrath over the destruction of the armor.

The city was too different from what Meissa was used to. On her way to the Academy from the administrative offices she'd seen kinds of people that were entirely new to her, which was disconcerting enough on its own. Then she'd stopped along one of the bridges to take a better look at her surroundings and was struck again by just how different this area was from the Sand. To help focus her mind better, she jotted a few notes into her notebook and doodled a quick sketch of the the skyline in the margins. This unfortunately didn't go as well as she'd hoped, as her drawing skills had atrophied as well during her time in the cocoon.

The architecture of the academy was much as she'd come to expect from seeing the other buildings in Ikeinasu: patchwork, cobbled together out of many different buildings, and desperate in a way that only arose when the artistic side of architecture had been disregarded out of necessity. Once she was inside and away from the wind, though, she found the building calming. After speaking with someone who worked there, she gathered an armload of basic scrolls and sequestered herself in one of the classrooms.

As she spread out the scrolls before her, she noticed another jewel had popped into existence, this time by her elbow. She watched it slowly orbit that part of her arm before ultimately placing it on the table. She was a bit startled when it sank into the wood, but she kept a cool head, waited a while, and managed to call it back out. It seemed to still be intact. Oddly, as it came back out, she felt her mind filling with a very detailed understanding of the desk, from its material to its dimensions to various minor details. To confirm she wasn't going crazy, she gave one of the table's legs a gentle twist and heard it pop into place, having slightly warped since its creation. Impressed, she took that bead and the others and placed them in a halo about her head, wanting them out of the way and out of her pockets while she studied.

The best place to start her studies, she figured, would be the basics. She pawed through the scrolls until she found ones she recognized as analogs to Jutsu taught in the academy back in the day: Shapeshift and Illusion Clone. With her Chakra--no, mana was the term if these were to be believed--acting differently from what she remembered, it took a few minutes for her to work out how to get the basic illusory clone working. It felt like she was using a completely separate set of muscles than she was used to, but given the circumstances that was probably reasonable. Shapeshift went a bit more smoothly now that she was getting used to how the energy flowed within her.

She casually dismissed the clone with a wave of her hand, then found the scrolls for Substitution and Shadowing Stealth, which were conveniently named similarly to the names she remembered. Using a chair as a target, she almost immediately succeeded at Substitution. Shadowing Stealth was a bit more difficult, since it involved expelling mana more carefully and more evenly across her body. Verifying it would be difficult since she was on her own, but she was confident there would be plenty of time to work with it when she headed to her assigned housing later.

Current Goal: Learning.
  • Shadowing Stealth: Learned!
  • Illusion Clone: Learned!

Another jewel popped into existence, this time orbiting her head with the others. Meissa was starting to get used to this sort of thing, but she had to figure out a way to turn it off. Her airspace was getting crowded. With a bit of effort, she reigned in her overflowing mana with the hopes that would stop them from generating.

Now that she had the most basic of basics down, Meissa was feeling a bit more confident about getting through the pile of scrolls she'd gnabbed. For now, she would concentrate on filling out her repertoire of basic techniques, but she definitely needed something more advanced to give her an edge in combat. She pondered what that could be while at the same time reminding herself how to escape from ropes, shatter barriers, and force herself to sleep. Just for fun, she also threw in a scroll about making balls of mana that burst into light.

C-Rank being the limit of the scrolls Ikeinasu had access to would be a problem in the long term. Manipulating wires, hurling roof tile-sized debris, and spitting toothpicks at people were all well and good, but against powerful foes they'd almost be more of a hindrance if there wasn't a solid follow-up. Some of her favorite techniques were C-Rank, but that didn't mean she wanted to only use them. She also picked up Release, if only to try it out. Unfortunately, the world around her seemed to be too stable to be swayed by the amount of mana she put into it.

"There's always a perverted jutsu, isn't there?" she mumbled to herself after realizing she'd picked up the scroll for Succubus. She tossed it on the return pile without reading it too deeply and moved onto other fundamentals: the Acts of Tree and Water Walking. Learning them was a bit of a strain on her mana network (or whatever it was called), but did help work out a few remaining kinks in her theory of how to control this energy that was ever-so-slightly different than Chakra. For good measure, she perused the scroll on Pattern Links--which she knew as Ayametori--before returning her scrolls and grabbing some on the wind element.

Success! No new jewels spawned during the time Meissa was fetching wind element scrolls! She felt a small amount of satisfaction at that fact. What was more, she found she could move them at will and wondered if that had to do with how many she had or if it was because of the increased control she'd developed over the past short while. She was starting to have an inkling of what the jewels might be, or at least what mechanisms governed them, but that was an investigation for another time.

The basics of the wind element were just as she'd remembered. Their method of activation was slightly different now because she still couldn't figure out how to get hand seals to work, but a wave of the hand here and a few words there were a small price to pay for these abilities, at any rate. Soon, her mastery of the basics extended to Wind Clone, Wind Levitation, Vacuum Sword, and Projectile Control.

She'd always been a fan of Great Breakthrough, Gale Wind Palm, and Propelling Winds, but in her diminished state, Meissa felt she needed something to help ensure her escape. Among the scrolls they had here, her best bet was probably Dust Wind, since it would loosen enemies' footing and potentially blind them, though it would naturally be little use against things that didn't use eyes to navigate. Whatever the youkai that Kaileer had mentioned were, she figured they probably relied at least partly on eyesight.

From wind to earth, Meissa was sweeping her way through the library's stocks. As delicately as could be managed, she sped through these scrolls as well, the pile shifting from "to do" to "done" much more rapidly than some might find normal. Then again, she didn't really have much of a metric for learning techniques in this world; it could be that she was doing things the least efficient way, but she doubted whoever made it would have put that much thought into the details underlying the illusion. Maybe Jack would've, but she couldn't think of any motive he might have had to do so, especially not after he'd been gone for so long. She zipped right through the scrolls for The Third Eye, Rock Throw, Stone Bracers, and Dust Clone.

Surprisingly, earth elemental techniques frequently involved a great deal of movement despite the element's association with immobility. This contradiction struck Meissa as she pawed through the scrolls for Earth Military Movement and Swift Earth. In contrast, Rock Shield--the next technique on the docket--fit the stereotype almost to a "t". Earth Tremor Sense sat annoyingly outside that dichotomy, but she learned it anyways, figuring it was a good way to search an area in a hurry.

Current Goal: Learning.
  • The Third Eye: Learned!

  • Stone Bracers: Learned!
  • Dust Clone: Learned!
  • Earth Military Movement: Learned!

tab There came a knock at the "door" to the room Meissa co-opted, a heavy rap in some rhythmic manner that might appear synchronous to a musical beat. A look would be all it took to show Meissa that something unnatural stood before her. The figure had a bushy mustache that encroached upon their face, their chin completely bald save for an enormous, convulsing wart that stuck out towards them and grew stiff in attention. He was old, face ragged and wrinkled, with ears that stuck out too far on the sides and a booty like powwwwww! And by that the little voices in your head were referencing the bottom that stuck out so far it might as well have been an undulating bench seat when he moved. Skin bluer than the depths of the ocean and with a gaze that defied definition of color the creature reached up and casually snatched at his mole, which lunged to the side to avoid his grip. With a nonchalance that seemed to indicate Meissa couldn't be seeing what was happening before her the man's fingers darted hither and thither as the mole danced around out of his reach, though each pass brought the mole's speed down as it if were growing weary. Finally, with a panicked stiffening and a tiny exclamation point popping up above its head it was pinned down between two fingers and rubbed vigorously, much to its clear chagrin. "Hello, new girl," he began in a voice that sounded like it resonated from the deep, ancient depths of a steel drum. "I'd heard someone like you was around here. New, untested, positively ripe with possibility!"
tab Holding out his other, free hand he spread his lips to reveal his pearly whites that looked to be suspiciously made out of legitimate pearls. "I've heard yer the inquisitive sort."

Meissa had been minding her own business while perusing documents related to shards and mediums when something out of a child's cartoon meandered in. Perhaps more unnerving than its appearance was its apparent familiarity with her. She eyed the blue being's outstretched hand for a moment, was slightly surprised by its metallic-looking nails, but ultimately decided to give it a short, firm handshake. She rose from her chair, shook the being's hand, then stepped back. She was now about 99% more certain she was in an illusion, but she could at least play along.

"And just who did you hear this from, exactly?" she opened cautiously. "I'm less inquisitive and more appreciative of the impact knowledge has on my survival. I'll be direct: who are you and what do you want?"

The young lady crossed her arms. The beads of mana orbiting her head like a halo started moving ever so slightly faster, as if they were winding up for something. She showed no indications of attacking, but she was very clearly on guard. The being before her was viscerally repulsive in a way that seldom occurred, like some alien entity had decided to create something that looked and acted like humans without a good understanding of either of those things.

Current Goal: Conversing with a strange blue entity.

tab The old man chortled as if in on some sort of hidden joke, though from the way his mole struggled against his fingers it might well have been anything but. Releasing the epidermal blemish from his righteous grip the creature did its best to bow low with a sweep of its arms, one behind its back, losing not a whit in height as his posterior stuck as far into the air as he did stand when in this precarious position. "My name isn't one you can pronounce, dear little one," he began, his tone signaling his taking on of some fatherly role or persona. "You see, I am what are called Kokoro. Merchants of a rare breed we trade in unusual knowledge and arts for as unusual a product. As to who told me about you, well, I cannot say, though some fella in a top hat told me you'd have a thirst for knowledge that couldn't be quenched, so I made my way here." Returning to his standing posture he gestured to the books and scrolls about them, ignoring for the moment the abnormal machines that also granted such learning knowledge. "I myself provided most of these scrolls for the memories of those who call this place their home. I simply wanted to see if you had anything to trade, and what, if anything, you'd like in return."

As the Kokoro spoke, Meissa's distrust only grew. Even putting aside its appearance, its words were cause for concern. She had the distinct impression that this creature was offering to steal some of her memories in exchange for unknown goods. At last, she found the purpose of this illusion beginning to show itself: her attackers were looking to gain access to confidential information. In that case, giving even a little bit of ground was potentially devastating. If she engaged, she would need to make sure the memory this entity gained access to wouldn't lead to anything immediately compromising.

"I'm wary of such a deal. Would trading knowledge mean I lose access to it?" she asked, not budging an inch from where she stood.

Generally speaking, she wanted more information on the world as it was. That sounded like something the Kokoro was willing to provide, at least, but it wasn't likely that the information would be specifically useful to her. Art was tempting, but not very useful unless it contained encoded messages.

"I'd like information on the oni that plague the area--their weaknesses, strengths, et cetera--and scrolls for techniques not contained in this library. I'll also take any art you don't want, I suppose, but those are more important. We can discuss what you'd like as payment after I get an answer to the question of whether I lose the memories I trade."

tab The mole stood erect and quivered in impotent rage as it wordlessly chastised the young maiden for daring to impugn on its honor! Did she not know who she dared address in such a manner? Well, of course not, but that didn't quell it's fury one whisker! As it screamed into the void the Kokoro placed his hands on his hips and dropped his bushy brows into the absolute definition of indignation, for once in agreement with his companion. "Now, now, young lady, I can see you think me malicious! What is it with you Wakeners immediately assuming we're all out to getcha?!" Holding one finger up towards her as if scolding a child he continue. "Ya'll should learn a thing or two from that boy, Shea! Was he afraid of me? Of course, I'm big, blue, and bodacious, so who wouldn't be?! But he opened up and now you have a roof over your head!"
tab Hrumphing in annoyance he placed the hand with the upheld finger back on his impressive hips before rearranging his expression into one of a stern, disapproving father to his wayward child. "We each have our own interests when dealing with you folk, and mine are memories. But what sort of fool would take from you whatcha remember and consider anything traded an equal value? Your memories are your own, I simply wish to explore the multiverse through the perceptions of others. In exchange I can give you some of whatcha seek, but to be honest much like anyone I have my limits. I'm no omniscient god, I'm a Kokoro!"
tab Sighing at last to release his pomped up air he stared at her a moment longer before reaching up and flicking the mole, causing it to bounce around like a punching bag with a wet slapping noise before it fell still, a swirl of confusion and dizziness appearing above it as it tried to come to its senses. "Now, that aside, knowledge of spells is another specialty of mine. I can't promise it'll be in scroll format, but I have ya covered depending on whatcha looking for specifically. As for the Oni, Kaileer knows more than I, especially that little Sprite of his, Fiorzia, but I can tell you what I know. They're business partners, after all, so I can't go spillin' all their ma-moles!"

"My apologies. In all fairness, none like you were present in my past life. Back then, trusting someone outright was a good way to get killed." The defense came to her lips with a rapidity that would've almost suggested she had prepared it in advance. She hadn't, of course, but the violence of the old world was something very familiar to her. Forgetting one's training was difficult, even moreso if it was written in blood.

She listened patiently to the Kokoro's explanations. Its trade model was familiar, even if the currency wasn't; in a sense, it was the same system she was used to. It was disappointing to hear that it wouldn't part with information on the oni. She didn't particularly like people who played both sides of a conflict.

"Very well. If it's seeing the world that you're interested in, how about I give you some memories of me traveling through the Wind and Fire Countries in exchange for information on techniques higher than C-Rank? The most useful elements for me would be Void, Wind, and Earth, but I'm sure the other elements and physical arts would be of use to others here. I also have memories of the fall of the Hidden Stone in the Earth Country, the Wind Country cities of Rouran and Saraswati on the southern coast of the Wind Country, if those would be of interest to you."

As she spoke, Meissa tried her best to ignore the wriggling lump of flesh on the Kokoro's face. The more she saw of it, the more she felt like it was a separate entity trying desperately to liberate itself from its host's face. It certainly didn't seem to be happy where it was.

tab The quipped response made him doubt, immensely, her sincerity, but it was something he was willing to overlook for the prize she offered. There was little he could do to mask the surprise on his expression, so instead he played along with it and kept it up. "Memories from before or after the desolation," he began, knowing that knowledge from before that was scarce, what with the place being mostly under magma these days and even that locked behind those monstrous gates. "For knowledge of such techniques, well...I do have them, but those are valuable indeed. Knowledge for direct knowledge is difficult to truly gauge for price, as what I value a memory with, and what you get in return, is entirely subjective. That said your species has only swindled me a dozen times within the last day, substantially better than most, so I find myself willing to part with more than normal. Let us say if you provide me knowledge of the Land of Fire, by which I assume you meant the Sharrad Desolation, along with knowledge of this place you call the Hidden Stone, I will be willing to part with five spells of knowledge. If you're simply looking for Arcanist spells, you have the right Kokoro for the job!" Bowing here, his buttocks once more extending into the stratosphere as his mustache brushed the ground, he held out his hand and grinned. "I await your answer and or your acceptance, young lady."

"The 'desolation'?" Meissa questioned, cocking an eyebrow. The gears in her mind turned for a second before something clicked into place. When it did, she nodded and her expression shifted back to neutral. "Ah, I'm guessing you're referring to the volcanic eruption. I suppose that means the area never recovered. There had been talks of trying to reclaim the area, but extenuating circumstances prevented anything more long-term than a rescue operation."

She sighed and bent her head toward the floor. Though it was effectively a past life, she couldn't help but feel she had failed the people of the Leaf. She'd hoped they would get at least some of their land back. After a moment of silence, she looked up again.

"Yes," she continued, "what I'm offering comes from before that event. Your price is agreeable. Any excess on my part will be the foundation for our future interactions. Take away."

She took a deep breath and relaxed her muscles, entering an almost meditative state where she let her memories of the Leaf in its heyday and of the fall of the Stone float to the surface of her thoughts. Drifting between the memories was the ash cloud from the Leaf's supervolcano, as seen over countless dunes, a spear of dark gray pushing out a bright blue sky, and the rescue operations that followed.

_______________The Narrator Whispers... ||
tab Taking a close look at her for a moment the Kokoro decided that she was being honest, and that was something he nodded happily at before the mole on his face began to glow. The radiance was quite blinding, directed forward at Meissa, painting her silhouette upon the back walls in stark contrast with the white wood behind her. As it did the Kokoro inhaled gently, taking in the scent of her memory and, with the mole's help, reliving the memories she offered. For Meissa it would feel as if she was being observed in her own memories, something that might have been supported if she opened her eyes and saw the twin pinpricks upon the Mole's surface that were most likely a set of eyes observing her, but after what felt like minutes but instead was a moment, the mole went lax on his face and the Kokoro sighed with some level of ecstasy before speaking, his voice full of emotion.
tab "To think that once the Desolation held life, and in such start contrast to what exists there now..." Clearing his throat, removing the excess emotion from his tones, he thumped his chest one time and coughed out a ball of grey mist that evaporated upon touching air. "I would say the Hegemony would pay dearly to keep this memory from reaching the rebels. I smell an opportunity!" Reaching into his vest pocket that could barely fit his finger he began to push harder, until his entire arm passed into its depths in violation of all reason. "Now, for your reward," he asserted jovially before his limb was extricated with a cartoonish pop as it came free holding a small disk that glowed with an eerie light along a thin line that ran around its entire perimeter. Resembling a collar, but rigid and made of steel, he held it out to her with a smile. "Press the button on the side, and it will play an image for you that instructs you."

Meissa definitely was not expecting eye beams to come from the mole, but she supposed that was what she got for going in blind. Plus, it seemed appropriately serious for the character before her.

The feeling of someone looking at her memories made her skin crawl, threatening to pull her out of her meditation. It was nothing like she'd expected, almost enough to give her retroactive anxiety over her actions. She was ultimately glad that she'd chosen relatively benign memories to share. It almost made her miss the days where she'd been in a high-profile public office and all the scrutiny that brought, if only because she could figure out how to evade that scrutiny for the most part. What had she been thinking when she agreed to this? There weren't many people she would trust with this sort of procedure, and almost none outside her immediate family.

"I suppose that's the transaction complete, then," she said as calmly as she could, ignoring the bead of sweat running down her back. She plucked the disc from the Kokoro's hands, looked it over, then called down a bead that had been orbiting her head. She sunk the bead into the object, then pressed the button.

"Let's see... Hari Jizou, Rasengan, Kazekaeshi, Gokusa Maisou..." she mumbled to herself as she watched the images flash past. Shortly after it started, she placed the disc down and started taking notes in her notebook. When all was finished, she turned back toward the Kokoro and bowed her head slightly. "These are very useful, thank you. Is there anything else you'd like to discuss?"

She snapped her notebook closed and pocketed it. Almost as an after-thought, she retrieved the bead she'd embedded in the disc and absorbed whatever knowledge it might have gathered.
