With a little jostling of Queens, one little red kit found herself suddenly separated from her brother and mother. One foot of toddling space between her and her family was a space so vast. Each piece of bedding, bit of fur from a meal became grasses too high to see over. Dips in the ground caused by movement of the queens in the soft dirt were canyons and impossible to cross ditches.
Shifting paw to paw as she sat, Cardinalkit tried to call for her mother. No sound came out with each attempt to call. Too stressed to even purr, the only sound that did work, one lost little kitten didn't know what to do. When there was no solution, the only answer is to hunker down and curl up on oneself.
Thanks to his siblings taking naps, Owlkit was on his own. Not even gnawing on his brother's ear woke the lump of fur! Huffing, the kit went looking for others in the den to play with. First one to catch his eye was a sight he'd never seen before.
The little red kit and her brother seemed to be a part of their mother rather than full kits in their own right. Probably the first time he'd seen one of them by herself. Not that her mother was far, just facing the wrong way. She seemed to be shaking!
Since his mother and her mother were friends, it was clearly his job to look after her. Getting her mother's attention, or even his own, was probably a good idea. Better idea was to play!
Bounding at the red kit with the energy of an older, well fed kit, Owlkit jumped right next to her.
Cardnialkit fell flat over and shouted at the top of her lungs out of surprise. Not a sound came out. Her little heart was beating so fast it seemed to want to jump out of her chest. Momma!! Mom!
Owlkit laughed, he'd surprised her good! Nudging the younger kitten he told her, "C'mon Cardnialkit, lets see if anyone else is up and wants to play!" He nudged her again until she got up and started to follow him.
