Origins

No one remembers the exact circumstances of the Herd's beginnings, though it's generally thought that the first members were running away from something and found a spot to hide ... then simply stayed and made their home there. Its idly argued back and forth among members whether the thing they were running from was the harsh light of the sun, or some enemy or other. What everyone does know is that most members of the Herd today are sensitive to the sun's light and many actually fear it - so they are quite content to live apart in their shadowy home.

General Information

OOC, the Herd's origins were thought up just after the "Black Friday" sale event in 2016, due to the sudden flood of dark monochrome Soquili and Familiars. Several ideas were tossed around in the original plotting thread and I'd like to thank everyone who contributed!

Who Can Join??

Primarily, the Herd should be made up of Soquili that are mostly dark colors! Familiars of any type and colors are allowed to join. Just keep in mind the Herd's traditions etc, below.

The Herd mostly lives on and inside of a dormant volcano located on a peninsula near the jungles. Part of the volcano has also formed underwater caves with pockets of air - making it a perfect home for both land and water-based members. All of the sand on the island is black, due to the volcanic ash that fell in ancient times.

There is a narrow land bridge connecting the peninsula to the mainland, which usually is only visible and able to be walked across at low tide.

Much of the flatter land on the peninsula is home to various predators, making the hilly areas safer than the plains and beaches. The waters around the island are also fairly safe - as the Sea Shades make it a habit to patrol them often.

Traditions

• Fear the Light - Most Soquili in the herd are sensitive to bright light, whether physically or even just mentally. Some are more blinded than others by the sun's light. Others simply don't like the day, or may be afraid of light in general, or of being spotted by predators, etc. This is not a requirement, but keep it in mind! Familiars are less bothered by the light of day, but most still follow the Herd's tradition of being more active at night.
  
  
• Stay Close to Home - For the most part, the majority of the Herd will not wander far away from their volcano home. They don't want to be caught out in an unfamiliar place during the day. Familiars are a bit of an exception to this, and some of the Sunstriders are more comfortable than others with going farther afield.
  
  
• Religion - The specific spirits that the Herd worships are called "Father Night" and "Mother Moon". They believe the stars are the spirits of their ancestors that have moved on. They don't have a specific name for the sun, as they think giving it a name or title will give the harsh light more of a hold over them than it has already.
  
  
• Moon Moon? - There are legends circulating within the Herd of another Herd that worships the moon, a Herd that is almost the opposite of theirs - consisting of all-white Soquili. But no one has ever seen any of these Herd members in living memory, and they have no idea where this Herd might be located.

Ranks

• Collectors - Given to the majority, collectors are the Herd members that go and hunt or gather items for the Herd's well-being. Most stay on or very near the peninsula, so it's easier to return to the volcano with their findings. Some who can move faster or fly may go farther afield. However, none are allowed to go more than a few hours travel, whatever their speed may be. After gathering sufficient goods for the herd and returning to the home base within the volcano, they can choose to go out again to find personal things for themselves or others, or to stay inside the volcano. Collectors only emerge during the night time. (Unlimited and open to Soq and familiars.)

• Sea Shades - A rank exclusively for the aquatic or partially aquatic Herd members. Much like Collectors, but with more freedom, Sea Shades are trusted to go fend for themselves in their aquatic domain, but are charged with the responsibility to act as scouts and potentially guards if anyone not part of the Herd should try to travel onto the peninsula. They patrol the waters that surround the peninsula, and if they happen to see something worthwhile that would benefit the herd, they become underwater Collectors. These Soquili swim to deeper waters or retreat to caves beneath the peninsula in the daylight and surface only under the night sky. (Unlimited, Mers, Seathi, Kelpie or aquatic familiars only.)

• Medicine Mares - A female-only rank, though it is open to female Soquili and Familiars, despite the title. Medicine Mares are the healers, midwives and shamans of the herd. There can be one or many in the herd and have the freedom to choose what sort of practice they take on. So long as it leads back to medicine and is beneficial in one form or another to the herd, they can do, within reason, as they please. (Unlimited, females only)

• Sunstriders - The limited few Soquili in the herd that leave during the day, Sunstriders not only leave the volcano, but the peninsula as a whole. In times of need, they will leave their home and search for resources only found farther away on the Kawani lands. They typically aren't gone for very long, because the herd believes that sunlight will eventually cause negative effects to even the strongest of Sunstriders; but if tasked with something of great importance by the herd, then they will seek the completion of their task with the greatest of urgency. (Limit of 7, more may be added with time.)
  To Join: Please write at least one short paragraph (IC or OOC) on the subject of why you think your Herd member would fit this role, and quote Manda in your post so I don't miss it! If there are already 7 Sunstriders in the Herd, you may still apply and you'll be considered but it is less likely at this time for there to be more than 7 approved.

Allies of the Herd

These are other Herds or individuals who are allies of the Herd. Usually, they help the Herd out in some way without actually being a part of it. They are not normally welcomed into the Herd's lands, except under extreme circumstances.

If any individuals or Herds wish to be allies with the Tenebrous Herd, just post who and why and quote Manda so I am sure to see it!

Cheehoo and Haka

This pair of brothers holds territory along the shore and in the sea close to the southern end of the peninsula's land bridge. Cheehoo is a coconut farmer and can usually be counted on to help the Herd with food if needed. Haka guards the sea near his brother's groves and cooperates with any Sea Shades who may need help patrolling the area or driving off invaders.
