A section of the city devoted to food. All major restaraunt set up shop in this area in order to prove their status as a prominent culinary force within Konoha. Whether it be ramen or steak there is the highest tier chef here ready to serve you... for the right price of course. The location is buzzing with people ready to indulge in the richest and most delicious food their tongues have ever tasted. This area also has the most prestigious bars, with alcohol so refined that it has to be served in an ice bar in order to stop any heat from possibly igniting it. This was the pearl of Konoha. This was the illuminated symbol of wealth within the village.

Ranmaru ventured through the village of Konoha until he stumbled upon the gourmet food district. The scents were incredibly inticing, with flavors he never smelled before back in Zaishin. Of course, since he was a man of a delicate pallet, he had to ensure that he was being served at the best possible restaurant. To ensure this, the young noble purposefully went to each and every restaurant to find out which one had the longest wait list. After all, if a restaurant had a long wait list, then surely they must have been a prominent and excellent restaurant. Once he found a location with the longest wait list, the young man waited for a table for two. The reason why he got a table for two was because he anticipated Sumire to eventually join him, even though the two of them did not schedule any formal meet up post leaving the kage's office. Nonetheless, the girl was certainly intelligent, so he surmised that she would make her way over to get a bite to eat. And if she didn't, then it was her lost.

Takeda, unlike the most recent guest at the fairly high-end restaurant, was not so patient. He'd just come back from showering in his recently rented apartment and wanted to eat something worthwhile to gain energy before training in Ninjutsu. A variety of factors went into deciding the place he'd dine in, from the confidence on display in the kitchen to the condition of those leaving the restaurant. While he commonly gave the first impression of being a traveling brute, one of the Jiongu's few passions in life was food. Ultimately, the best place to eat that he decided on also happened to be the one with the longest waitlist, unfortunately. Longer waits could mean anything from cheap foods to the restaurant being the newest fad to catch on, but it seemed that fate would have it be exceptional instead. He hadn't eaten in several days, and while it wasn't necessary for his survival, he wouldn't recover from his injuries without energy. There was no way he'd put himself through Ninjutsu training while running on empty, but there was only so much time in the day and he wanted to complete a mission or two as well.
The green-haired man in lavish clothing appeared to be his silver lining. There was an air of dignity about him but Takeda didn't catch the feeling that he was unapproachable. With little subtlety in his approach, the jiongu made his way over to the table and pulled out the unused seat, using his other hand to place five distinct, large coins on the table with a quiet rattle. Ryo, and not cheap coins either. They represented enough to easily pay for whatever was on the menu with some extra. It was a silent gesture that left little to the imagination. The most important indication was that he wasn't some bum off the streets who didn't plan on paying for their meals. "Is this seat taken? I don't know many people who like to wait alone for their food and I don't have time to loaf around waiting to be seated. Or are you not in the mood for any company?" He asked, hiding nothing in his meanings. Takeda was nothing if not honest, after all.

Ranmaru delightfully took a seat when a man placed some loud coins upon the table, requesting a dining partner. While a perplex glare initially met the boy, Ranmaru shrugged his shoulders as he assumed this to be part of ninja culture. And, as the saying goes; do as the ninja do. "By all means." He said with a nod and smile. While the seat was reserved for Sumire initially, since she chose to be late for a dinner reservation she had no way of knowing about, it was only fitting that her punishment should be to stand while Ranmaru and this strange ninja sat at the table. When the waitress came over and asked for drink orders, Ranmaru ordered both he and the other boy a bottle of whiskey. The woman naturally wanted to see the id of the younger man, which caused Ranmaru to gasp in objection. "Does he not wear one of your villages headbands? Don't tell me shinobi culture is so backwards that the same ninja you expect to protect you are prohibited from indulging in life's finer pleasures." The waitress nervously said that she needed to go over to her manager in order to answer, and with a wave of his hand Ranmaru dismissed her. "If you are of legal age, whatever idiotic metrics that range be in your home nation, do me a favor and do not bow to this restaurant's archaic mannerisms. There is no reason why a nation which expects your blood to be spilled for them should try and police your recreational activities." Ranmaru said with his hands on his table. He then went back to the menu to look at the options of food. Thankfully samurai and shinobi seemed to have similar pallets, so he understood what most of the foods on the menu were. He was quite excited to have lobster, since such meat was a delicacy in Zaishin, and it had been hundreds of years since he's had some.

Takeda raised a brow at his new companion's response towards the waitress. He appreciated being able to take the seat but he wasn't going to play along with anything less than completely honest. "You've got a strong will and that's something I appreciate, but you're fighting the wrong battle here. I haven't sworn myself to a kage's service in at least a decade." He used one hand to slide a menu closer to his side of the table while the other displayed a badge with the insignia of Konohagakure. "I'm wandering the world right now. Getting stronger. This badge just lets me take on missions meant for the Shinobi of this village. I guess that still means that I'm protecting them but I don't' want to be owed anything." He said while pocketing the insignia once more. There was a lot more to it, but nothing he was willing to discuss with a stranger. "Oh." He exclaimed, recalling something he wanted to say. The actual selection of drinks was amusing to him and there was no hiding the smirk that made its way onto his lips. "Whiskey was a good choice. Thanks."
The waitress returned with two glasses instead of one. A good choice. He noticed the man he assumed to be her manager watching the group out of the corner of his eye and decided that he wouldn't make a show out of embarrassing her. She ended up asking them what they wanted to eat and he quickly came to his conclusion after only viewing the first page of the menu. Konoha didn't have nearly the same bounty as Kirigakure did when it came to its seafood, so he had doubts when it came to the quality. What it did have in abundance, however, was forest animals and unique herbs that didn't exist back home. "I'll have your venison loin dish. Medium-rare with a white bean puree and whatever your head chef prefers. It's all fresh and local, yeah?" She nodded fervently in response to his question, obviously buckling under the pressure of having her boss stare her down from across the room. A quiet "tch" left him as a harsh frown started to take shape. Red eyes glared past her and towards the one judging her from her shadow.
Those who took advantage of the weak to benefit themselves were scum.
"Hey! It's not her who gets to decide whether or not she asks me pointless questions about my age, right? Stop staring at us. It's creepy and I'm sure you have better things to do."
Appearance:
Takeda's wearing a black coat with scarlet trim and subtle, intricate designs over a white dress shirt. For the winter season, he's wearing a scarf with a darker red shade around his neck. It's big enough to cover the lower half of his face if he's feeling exceptionally cold. He also wears black slacks and oxfords that seem tailored to let him move without resistance when it comes to kicking or maneuvering. There are three pouches on his belt - one on each side and another behind him. It should also be noted that there are still specks of white in his dark hair, which is still shoulder length and longer than he wants it.

Ranmaru listened with full focus as the man spewed more about ninja culture to him. It seemed like such a foreign concept that ninja could be unaffiliated with a village and yet be protected under their same laws, or be allowed to partake in missions exclusive to the village. Then again, Ranmaru was protected here and given village hospitality despite being technically a wanderer himself. He assumed that the kage arranged for something like his ordeal because of his political powers as an ambassador for Zaishin. It felt a little degrading that an unaffiliated vagabond somehow got the same treatment as he did. Then again, this wasn't Zaishin. The more he pressed his ideologies onto this village, the more chaotic this wildfire of a village seemed to be. It was for this reason that he chose instead to just smile and order the lobster when he was offered, and pour himself a shot while the other boy ordered. He took the first sip of his expensive whiskey when Takeda shouted out, as he caught the vision of a man Ranmaru was ignorant to, since he didn't bother to look over past the waitress.
"I recognize that manners are a foreign concept in the land of ninja, but to observe one's own subordinates like butterflies under the microscope seems excessive." Ranmaru said as he took a deep sigh at the situation. He gave an over the shoulder look at the manager, who did not at all seem phased by the outburst of a guy not fully aligned with the village. He returned his focus to the man sitting across from him and pondered. "Do make sure when paying for your portion of the meal that you tip excessively. While I doubt I will ever pleasure this place again, I do want the woman who brought us our drinks to know that her actions deserve praise." He said as he took another sip from his whiskey. He looked at Takeda and sighed when he felt like that man was still not satisfied. "Unless you have a better plan of dealing with the problem. I doubt that you're such a brute that your immediate thoughts are to solve this with fist over wits, which is why I am all ears for whatever other kind of justice you wish to see play out." Ranmaru said nonchalantly. While he was not looking for a fight on account of being a researcher, he would be willing to listen to whatever ploy the man had to
Mimiru found herself among The Sense of Indulgence, an economic center of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. She came her to study and prepare herself for the duties of being not just a great doctor and performer, but her guilty pleasure was good food. She had been granted a chance at being a dishwasher, which gave her a prime time spectator spot in the very kitchen. As she washed dishes, she put her effort into making sure each one was clean. Good food started from sanitary conditions, from the plating to the actual cooking area. It was an artform, often underused and underrated. Still, even granted menial tasks within the gourmet establishment was enough to get the point across.

The lunch rush had begun to pick up and so did her work in the dish area, until she got the grand idea to multitask. As a kunoichi in training, Mimiru would need to be able to undertake multiple tasks at once. One of the line cooks had agreed to let her connect to them using her Miyamoto techniques, and from there, she used the sight ability of the connection to watch the cook from his own viewpoint. She did this all the while keeping up with the ever-mounting and never-ending influx of dishes she was tasked with washing. Still, many would be envious of the honor of working even in the lower rungs of such an establishment.

While watching through the eyes of her line-cook friend during this very busy meal period, she got to observe and learn from their knife skills. Even if they were not a shinobi, their knife cuts were precise and with direction. 'Perhaps all of that study with kunai and precision strikes might actually come in handy in the kitchen after all...', Mimiru thought to herself. Though she could not allow herself to be distracted by the skill of the line cook during their connection. The dishes were not doing themselves, and she took a break from focusing on the shared sight to work harder and faster at keeping clean plates and bowls in supply for the various lines as food seemed to be flying from pans to plates.

The hustle and bustle of the kitchen almost sounded like a musical performance to Mimiru as she worked hard in the dish station. The clash of pans, the crackle and flare of fires, and the shouts from one cook at a station to another. It was all of the coordination and unity among them that made the operation a success. The blue haired kunoichi was a part of that unity, she began to realize, as even her menial job was important to the success of the operation. Through the link she shared with the line cook, she also got to understand the importance of not just making the food taste good, but look good as well. This was not just a performance, it was performance art! Though she was getting tired, the shift she had agreed to cover was almost over, and it was not yet time to quit.

With the lunch rush coming to a close, Mimiru disconnected her link to the line-cook as he tossed his apron in the laundry area. Still, her job was far from done yet. She worked hard, putting elbow grease into removing food from plates and bowls, washing them, rinsing, sanitizing, and then putting them in the drying station to air dry. It was impressive just how much food had left the kitchen during the rush, but then that meant the people willing to pay the money were also likely happy from the service, even Mimiru's mediocre task of simply cleaning up behind them. With her time and experience in the kitchens of the gourmet at a close, it was time for a little break of her own.

Sumika wandered around Sense of Indulgence looking every bit as out of place as the massive, scruffy-headed panda plodding along beside her. In place of her normal cloak, the diminutive woman wore a relatively light bomber jacket and well-fit, slim cut jeans that hugged, but didn't squeeze as they tapered down her legs and into a fairly robust pair of combat boots. Under the jacket, a well worn (read: full of holes) t-shirt sloppily cut to stop a couple inches above the beltline and adorned with what might have once been the image of a popular animated character shifted over a sports bra that itself was covered in various printed obscenities as if designed to force the prospective reader to examine the wearer's chest. All in all, she looked more like someone who'd jumped into a pair of jeans to head down to the corner store than a potential patron of pricey pubs, and not at all like she was actually wealthier than most of the people she passed combined - probably because in her head the numbers in the bank ledgers were fake.
She returned the glares from the petty business lords as she hunted around for Kai while Cobalt somehow managed to continually swipe treats from the odd stall without anyone noticing. She'd always avoided this place, as she found it tended to attract the type of indulgent, empty brained brand of pseudo-wealthy patron that just enjoyed any slop you put in front of them as long as the presentation was solid. The puppeteer was certainly not above eating trash food, but she at least preferred it not be dressed up and accompanied by people whose most notable character trait was that they have a bunch of pictures of fruit on their walls or whatever other weird habit they'd formed. At least if the bars got too cute with the names or too into the absolutely nonsensical idea that they could judge the quality of an alcoholic beverage by taste or age, it all still typically got you drunk.

Kai bustled through the stalls, looking for Sumika until he realized looking for the panda would be a smarter move. He activated his sharingan to ensure he missed nothing as his eyes flickered through the crowd. Before long, he spotted her and flickered beside her. "Hey!" He called in greeting. His giddy expression fell for a moment as he realized she was dressed down from combat gear, but he was in his usual combat wear besides his jacket, which had just been switched out with the cliche green flak jacket belonging to Jonin, the ranks of which he'd just joined.
"Man, way to make me feel unfashionable," he said with a laugh. "This is gonna hurt the 'cred." He examined his own clothing for just a moment before shrugging it off. "Oh well. At least we don't look like all the stuffy people that are regulars here." He rubbed his chin as he thought about where would be the best for them. He personally really liked ordering from the place that cut sausages into octopi because they were his mom's favorite, but somewhere that specialized in more vegetarian grub might be better for Cobalt.
"The Nest is up to the left and they've got a little garden we can sit at. I heard that, in addition to their huge tofu menu, they've recently added meat that isn't actually meat? Could be dangerous though."

โJitonโs heavy.โ She said, obviously referencing her normal outfit and its unique composition. โIโd wander around in the body suit, but anything skin tight is like a bug light for prudes. And hey, the JUEI will stop stalking me if thereโs a Jonin around, so youโll probably earn brownie points for wearing that crap around me.โ Her tone was profoundly casual for someone who was discussing the villageโs secret policeโs surveillance of their movements with their squad leader while simultaneously wrestling a piece of fake bamboo away from a panda that was easily as tall as they were even while standing on all fours. Well, wrestling was probably the wrong word, a pinch of the nose and Sumika had the cheap, painted wood - the type of efficiency one might expect from someone whoโd lived with Cobalt for quite a long period of time now. She glanced around over her shoulder to see if anyone was searching for the now rather mangled piece of set dressing, before casually spearing it into a planter in front of the nearest building.
โI donโt know if theyโll be able to keep his attention, but big guy here is getting a bit bored so it canโt hurt to give him something different to chew on. And Iโm not worried about some fake meat. Itโll get you first anyways.โ She added, obviously making a little joke at Kaiโs expense in reference to the mission. Whatever weird dynamic probably should have existed between Kai and Sumika right now, as superior and subordinate, didnโt seem to stick to the woman. Probably because, at least to her, that didnโt set the power dynamics of her relationships in the village. At least one benefit of having openly butted heads with Sadayo, and having lived through the shifts of the village over the years, was a sort of transcendental relationship with its actual hierarchy. Hell, Kaiโs rank probably gave her more power over him than it gave him over her at this point. It was a sign that he cared about the perception of himself in the village, and that was something the ornery genin heโd been saddled with was a singular talent at exploiting.
Plenty of people had come and gone in her time, climbed the ranks and disappeared anonymously into the ether without having done anything of value - while she set up a lounge chair on the landing of her own separate staircase and watched them fall back down. Burned out in the blink of an eye, often while raving at her about their superiority. She was the last flame of old Konoha left, though, and sheโd only started burning brighter and hotter as time passed. Why would she care about ranks more often filled by feckless ladder climbers than worthwhile companions? The Uchiha had only as much influence over her as was afforded to him by Sadayoโs ability to harass the platinum blonde puppeteer, which was to say very little. At least until he proved that he was on the stairs with her and not about to fall and break his neck like so many before him. โCome on Cobalt,โ she said as she tousled the fur on the top of the pandaโs head and started off in the direction Kai mentioned, โOur brave and generous squad leader is going to buy you food.โ It wouldnโt sound like it at the moment, at least not to Kai, but this particular statement was about as serious a financial threat as anyone could make.

Sumika's comment about the JUEI stalking her took a moment for him to process. Then, predictably, his gaze flickered to the rooftops around them as if he would be able to see such well-trained shinobi. He suppressed his sudden unease with a laugh at his own expense from her comment. "Would you believe me if I told you that I have an iron stomach?" It wasn't at all true, but he hoped to stir up some intrigue, or perhaps just some faith in his abilities to handle potentially dangerous pseudo-meat.
He led them to the area he'd described: a lush garden surrounding the restaurant with hand-carved stone tables that were as artificially simple as they were artificially natural. The mix of cultureless minimalism with ancient, religious stone statues and motifs made the restaurant a popular place for people who couldn't appreciate the past unless it was reduced to superficial emblems adorning something 'aesthetic'.
Meanwhile, Kai was loyal to The Nest for their peanut and chili sauce. "When did you and Cobalt meet?" He blurted out unexpected as they were sat with menus. He realized how out of place the two of them both looked here, and felt a little guilty. His mom would've critiqued his choice of location for sure, but... he was just trying to keep his promise of drinks. That's all. He chewed the inside of his cheek for a moment as he looked over the drinks, but none of it was recognizable. The names and descriptions didn't help him conceptualize anything. A cocktail with figs? What? He also had no idea what his alcohol tolerance was and nothing was warning 'this will knock you on your a** so sip slowly'. "Maybe sake at a ramen bar would've been a safer bet," he murmured louder than intended as he second-guessed himself.

Sumika threw herself into a chair with a casual lack of concern for the furniture, having also just kicked it a few feet over so Cobalt had enough room. She held up a finger in response to Kaiโs quip about his stomach, a bit of Jiton coalescing into a ball above it. โIron, huh?โ She asked, a tone of amusement at the fact that heโd bragged about the resiliency of his stomach using a metal the woman was a master at breaking down. The puppeteer watched her squad lead dig into the menu with a similar look of amusement. โI was, hmm, fourteen or fifteen when I got Cobalt. Some vendor in Takumi district in Iwagakure, back when that place was relevant, that was really desperate to not have a giant panda, I guess. I went to get supplies for my puppetry, friend bought him as a gift. Used to have a ratty old cloak, and heโd ride in the hood.โ
She finished her abbreviated origin story for the bear thatโs head was now perched on the edge of the table as she popped a buckle on the packs he carried and pulled them into a spot she could kick her feet up on. โAnd miss out on this atmosphere? Really?โ She joked, obviously referencing the strange decor as she gestured at the space around them. Of course, Sumika was notoriously not picky when it came to food, so it didnโt really make a difference to her. She unironically appreciated the awkwardness of the situation, but she doubted the Uchiha shared in her delight at upsetting the order of things. She had to admit though, the fussing over the menu was kinda adorable.
โAlright, fancy pants, stop staring so hard youโre going to accidentally Amaterasu the menu and buy me a drink.โ Sumika said as she settled herself down further in the chair. It was Kaiโs turn for a bit of a challenge. He had offered drinks and she wanted to see how quick he was on his feet. She wouldnโt hold it against him, it was plain he was out of his depth with this particular maneuver, but she figured sheโd give him a shot at rescuing himself from flying too close to the sun. โOh, oh, and letโs make it even more interesting! Cobalt will have veggie sushi if they have it, since he wonโt stop trying to steal the stuff, and as many raw veggies as the waiter can manage and Iโฆ. will have what youโre having, with a side of noodles if it doesnโt include them already.โ She respected the ambitiousness of the whole scenario, honestly. Knowing Sumika wasnโt overly fond of Uchiha, knowing she was older, knowing sheโd make him stand out.
Sheโd been asked out by civilians before, but most of the other shinobi were far too concerned with their status to be seen rubbing elbows with her. Hell, Uzu had to have been the last time she had off the clock fun with someone else dumb enough to wander around in a headband like her. She did wonder what Kai was hoping to get out of this though, because they could have just gone to any dive. Sumika certainly did not present herself as opposed to such establishments. In fact she was a regular at quite a few. And yet here they were sitting in a fever dream of a restaurant surrounded by a district full of people with honestly kinda creepy food fetishes. I read like a date, specifically one he didnโt feel comfortable asking for directly. That aside, plus points for degree of difficulty, minus for style so far, but sheโd been on nights out where she was bored out of her mind before they even got to the table, so he was doing pretty well overall.

Kai wasn't much into fate or any kind of determinism - besides the bones-deep knowledge that he would certainly be a world class rapper some day - but he wondered if her coming across Cobalt was just chance. The two seemed more in sync than he was used to seeing ninja animals with shinobi. He was pulled from his reverie at her joke, which he laughed at with only a slight delay.
Wait, he was picking her drink out? He wondered, briefly, if actually using Amaterasu would get him out of it, but he stifled the thought immediately after. "Two Caprese cocktails and two Blackberry Smashes," he started ordering when the waiter arrived. He also requested Cobalt's vegetables, then some gyoza nabe and plant-based teriyaki "beef" for the two of them, with a side of noodles for Sumika. If their order was nonsensical, the waiter had the class not to show it, though he did give the giant panda one last glance before leaving.
"I know I had a lot of confidence earlier but I'm kind of having second thoughts about the fake beef," he confessed with a laugh. He really didn't want to lose any face with Sumika, though he wasn't sure why he cared so much about her opinion specifically.
And then the waiter was back and dropping their drinks off, and Kai thanked the waiter. And then his eyes fell on the caprese one that looked kinda gross and he definitely sorta felt like he was ruining everything. "Oh, don't drink that, it does not look good. It might kill you. It looks like a witch's brew, y'know, like when you would put grass and water and flowers in a glass as a kid?" He picked up his caprese cocktail and moved the glass in a circle to watch the liquid move. Was it a health nut thing? "I think I should lend to your expertise for the drinks... I should just be in charge of music." He grinned and raised the drink to his lips to try it, but he hesitated.

ok so i had to rely on the internet bc i don't know anything about alcohol. found some weird ones!
caprese cocktail - like caprese salad, it's got grape tomatoes, lemon, basil, vodka, mozzarella balls, sea salt. looks green, served with a cherry tomato on a toothpick. doesn't look tasty even tho caprese is delicious
blackberry smash - blackberries, sugar, lime juice, bourbon, water, ginger beer, elderflower liquer and blackberry syrup. looks good and pink but i dunno half the ingredients so i just assume it tastes like blackberries

The puppeteer watched Kai trip through the process of ordering the drinks and food, and suddenly she was wondering why. Why so flustered at, well, seemingly everything. Her outfit, his choice of location, what drink to buy, the food he was about to offer her, the stuff he already bought, the stuff he had in his hand. She raised the glass that the Uchiha had warned her off without a second thought, downing a fair bit of it with no ill effects.
It wasnโt particularly strong, giving off the vibe of a dinner cocktail rather than something youโd order at a bar. The flavor was the opposite. Quite rich and maybe a bit too powerful for her when it came to drinks. A bit like a bloody mary, but if you didnโt cheap out and make it out of crappy canned tomato juice like most places did. Never were really her thing, but then again Sumika wasnโt particularly picky when it came to booze. She wasnโt a huge fan of wine in general, but that didnโt mean there were varieties that she could get down with. Beyond that? If you served it up, sheโd put it down with very, very few exceptions.
โYouโre gallons away from whatโs in that cup being able to kill you.โ She said in an amused tone before taking another sip of the cocktail. โHell, I saw you heal yourself, youโd have to drink like a hundred of those a week for the next decade to do any real damage. What are you so hung up on?" It wasnโt really a question meant to be answered, at least not out loud. It was more a question for Kai to ask himself. โIf youโre worried about what Iโll think if you mess something up, just stop already. Iโm not like that.โ She continued, shifting the drink to her left hand so she could give Cobalt a few scratches behind his big ears and taking another sip. โIโm not interested in you being anything that you arenโt already - unless youโre in charge of stuff, which you arenโt, because โbaby-sittingโ me doesnโt count. And donโt try to tell me this is just how you are. You canโt tell me youโll go charging into a cave you barely fit into but are afraid of a damn cocktail that you ordered and expect me to believe it. Or the opinion of a five foot nothing puppeteer that you outrank, for that matter. You ainโt got time for that, youโre already at a disadvantage Ooo-Chee-Ha-Sama. Canโt be kicking it in the kiddy pool when Iโm out here in the ocean.โ

Perhaps this was because her tolerance was exceptional, or maybe it was because she simply looked the variety of relaxed one might normally be after settling into a drink before she even started hers. โYou can be afraid of Cobalt though, Iโm sure he wonโt mind.โ As if on cue, in an attempt to make her look silly, the massive bear began pawing at his snout to scratch an itch in a display that was far too adorable to be a coincidence - drawing a coy smile from Sumika in the process. She poked fun at Kai, but at this point she was more interested to see if he could get over himself.

Kai waited for a moment after Sumika downed her drink but, when she didn't immediately barf, he let himself sip at his own. He didn't know how to compare it to anything he'd had before, but he didn't hate it. When she prodded him about his healing abilities, he laughed. She had a point, but the idea was to not need to rely on healing hands in his day-to-day life. His ears burned at her bluntness as she dissected the evening and his behavior.
"You're right. This is all really new for me. 'This,'" he said as he gestured to the restaurant area with his hands, "being any kind of socialization outside of the academy or a mission. I've buried myself in my work since I... made a mistake. When I was younger. And the way that you don't care about my rank or my position as squad leader made me realize that I was someone outside of that and I didn't, um, really know who that was. I'm really used to being seen as a sensei or a medic and that's really all I've been for the last few years. Even the rapper stuff is just a role, though it's admittedly one I chose all for myself."
He was saying too much. It didn't make any sense. He downed his caprese cocktail, not choking on it purely out of luck. "Sorry. That's not what I'm- I'm not trying to dump on you. It's just that I really do care about what you think. Earlier, I was definitely trying to figure out how to motivate you as a shinobi - since that's what I'm trained to do - but 'this' is something else. I thought I could be someone outside of all my responsibilities, but I think I neglected that Kai a little too much. It was selfish to try and fix that by taking you out and forcing myself out of work. I'm sorry." He cut himself off as the waiter arrived with their food and left just as quickly.
