tab A scant half-day's journey west of Port Nilam are the foothills at the base of the Kyde mountain range. Thanks to the frequent storms that blow in from the sea and mountain runoff, this area has access to enough water to actually grow crops. While this may seem a major boon for an area as desolate as the Land of Radiance, there isn't enough space for extensive agriculture, so it can't support other regions.
tab This naturally begs the question: What could be important enough to crowd out food? The answer: ore. The ore veins in the Kyde Foothills run as deep as they are varied, making this region one of the foremost exporters of ore in the world. There were a few attempts to set up smelting facilities here, but thanks to competitive trade deals with Nilam it was actually less profitable to sell processed materials than raw. These projects were eventually dismantled, leaving only the foundations behind.
tab Houses in the Kyde Foothills tend to be small and very far apart. One room and a bed are all most people will ever know until they start a family of their own, in which case there might be an additional room for the children. The largest building in a given area will usually be a bathhouse built around a hot spring. Since further mining of an area is generally discouraged once a spring is discovered, this also tends to be the hub for most communal activities and business.
tab Demographically speaking, the most dominant group in this region is the Hurin Azhura. It is uncommon, however, for any given Hurin to stay for longer than a season or two, meaning that while they are the most common race, they actually have a surprisingly low interest in maintaining a government or solving any disputes that might arise. This has led to the de facto annexation of the foothills by the businesses of Nilam. This has sometimes led to bloodshed as disputes between workers and their employers escalated out of control; notably, in the not-so-distant past there was functionally a civil war between the two sides over workers' rights, a matter that still hasn't fully been settled. It's considered a faux pas for outsiders to pry too deeply into this history, so documentation is scarce.

tab • Kyde Mines - Mines run throughout the Kyde Foothills and are both easy to access and easy to find work in. Workers are perpetually in short supply, so pay is decent and no questions are asked of applicants.
tab • Nilam Freight Line - One of the most profitable companies to set up in the area is Nilam Freight, which employs just over two dozen people. Their headquarters is an overturned ship hull on top of one of the foothills, painted purple with a band of pink around the base. Nilam Freight built, operates, and maintains a rudimentary railroad system that carries shipments between Nilam and the various mining collectives. Their only train is slow, loud, and has no passenger cars, but it's reliable enough that companies in Nilam use it for regular shipments.

tab • Goats - Horse-sized creatures with curled horns and short fur. Though they now more closely resemble horses, they are descended from goats and retain the name. Some Wakeners have adopted the term “gorse” to refer to them. They retain the diet and most mannerisms of their ancestors, with one major exception: they now love to stomp on gourds before eating them. Gourds are their favorite snacks for this reason. Newcomers are advised to keep their heads above a gorse’s shoulders at all times. Wild gorses are called Mountain Stalkers for their tendency to follow people who wander into their territory.
tab • Fool’s Geodes - A type of armadillo with a dark brown shell that blends in well with the dark soil present in the Kyde Foothills. Many an unsuspecting miner has picked one up thinking they’ve found a geode, only to have it come to life and try to scurry away on its eight, clawed feet. When threatened, a Fool’s Geode can launch itself at an enemy like a cannonball. Projectiles are all but useless against these critters due to the hardness of their shells and their amazing speed. Some people (mostly kids and drunks) refer to them as “armakillos”.

tab • Rocks - These foothills have copious amounts of most metals and minerals.
tab • Angel Tears - Throughout the foothills grows a strain of mushroom that is one of the hardiest in the world. These shrooms leach harmful minerals from the soil, making them highly toxic but also highly desirable for reclamation efforts. Their spores break down organic matter and rejuvenate the earth around them, making them desirable for farmers looking to cultivate new fields. They are individually rather small and white--giving rise to their name--but tend to grow in patches several meters across. Just don’t eat them.
