Arashigakure happened to have excellent food, and the street fair was doing its best to present this to anyone who could afford it. Akihiko was looking forward to trying nearly everything the stands had to offer but it would take a team to get to everything before the fair closed. He ran a hand through his hair as he put a strategic plan together before turning to Akaran to share.
He played with a few ryo coins between his fingers before he put them Akaran's hand. "Hey, Aka, how about you get those strawberry blended things and I'll grab the barbeque. We can meet by the tables that sit between these two," he said, gesturing to two different stands that had stuffed animals and stupid trivia games in store. He didn't wait for much of a confirmation before heading on his way. The tables he'd gestured to were very full, but he wasn't intending to tell Akaran just how underhanded he would be in order to secure a good, shady spot under the warm sun.
β±β°β±Akaran smiled as he walked through the fair with Akihiko. He was already stuffing his face with c**k chicken. He devoured the roasted chicken stick meats that tasted of lime and grill. He smiled brightly in the light of this thus far perfect day. Akaran skipped along and devoured five sticks of meat before being stopped by Akihiko. He nodded and smiled even brighter after swallowing the remaining festival food in his mouth. He took the ryo and saluted Aki before going to get the drinks and sitting down at the shady spot after using his puppy dog eyes to get some people to leave their shaded spot early.

As Akaran secured the two strawberry drinks, a young man bumped into him and squeaked a little at the collision. "S-sorry," the kid said, ears turning red as he averted his gaze. However, this position gave Akaran the perfect opportunity to see how the kid looked like Akihiko almost exactly - same white hair and pale skin, but with a freckled face; it would be difficult to tell but perhaps Akaran would also notice the bold green eyes that the kid bore before he pushed away from Akaran and further into the crowd.
Akihiko had harassed the folks in the shade before settling in. Akaran approached and Akihiko turned to give him a brief wave before leaning back so the samurai could appreciate all the barbeque kebobs that the mercenary had secured. "Quite the haul, eh?" He'd say, not allowing Akaran to share any strange occurrences. "This one is rabbit, but this one is like frog or something - haven't tried that in years - and these two are more traditional pork but I've also got this one that's beef if you end up hating the first two." He wanted to explain the different sauces used on the pork ones, as one was sweet and the other was a very spicy blend that he hadn't heard of before, but he was interrupted.
He turned to the side as a kid cleared his throat besides them at the table. "A-are you Akihiko Shinsuke?" The kid stammered out, though his nervous voice sat at odds with his... angry? expression. Weird. Akihiko narrowed his eyes at the kid, knee-jerk response coming out as a curt, "What the ******** is it to you?" He then self-corrected before Akaran could chastise him. "Er, yeah, that's me, kid. What's up?" In a flash, the kid drew a blade towards Akihiko's throat, and while Akihiko was caught off-guard, the kid was still moving at an inhuman speed, and he wasn't going to adjust in time to avoid the knife coming for his jugular.
β±β°β±When he saw the young man bump into him he thought it was Akihiko for a second. "Back already?" Aka asked as he walked with the drinks until he heard the apologetic squeak that did not match his fiance's voice. His eye color and freckles were different but Aka was puzzled to see someone who looked so similar to Aki but only a little bit younger. Because of their similar ages, he looked like he could be Aki's little brother which he did not have as far as Aka knew. "You're good!" Aka responded jovially as he excused the young man's bumping into him. He focused on not spilling the drinks and did so rather successfully as he made his way to the table. He smiled and quickly tried to dismiss thoughts of the boy's face but it kept entering his memory intrusively. "Frog sounds gross." Aka spoke up but his hungry eyes were rather fixated on the other meats. There was nothing that Akaran loved more than a nice, long, meat stick. Aka was then extremely confused when the boy his mind was fixated on approached their table and said Aki's full name. "Ay, be nice." Aka admonished Aki for being rude but was still immensely befuddled by it all. When he brandished a knife on his beloved, the loyal oni immediately jumped into action. He athletically jumped across the table and allowed a sharp bone to leave the center of his right palm close to the lad's left eyeball. Vicious instinctual protectiveness lit up his eyes as he leered at the boy. "If you hurt him then I'm ******** ending you, chief." Akaran barked with some insidious ferocity that may intimidate the boy. He kept focused before elaborating in stern but less hotly enraged tone of voice. "Whatever your deal is, violence ain't the answer, little dude." Akaran's morality made him greatly prefer not having to hurt this kid but he placed Aki above all others.

Akihiko had smirked at Akaran's response to the frog - more for him, then. However, the speed of Akaran in moving over the table to protect him was quite the sight. He knew just how powerful Akaran was, but seeing it in action was always a pleasure. In fact, it made Akihiko uncomfortable enough that he squirmed a little, noting for himself that he should avoid standing up for a little bit.
Thus, he stayed seated and turned to the kid. The knife was just a little off from his throat to be as threatening as it was intended to, but Akaran's eye-centered bone attack was well-placed and Akihiko got to enjoy, up close, the panic that expressed itself in the kid. "What's your ******** deal, kid?" He comfortably leaned back as Akaran's threat remained, and the kid looked between the two of them before withdrawing slowly so as not to provoke Akaran. The kid kept the blade in his hand. "You abandoned my mother, Keiko Zenshin, and her heartache killed her. You owe a life for a life," the kid said boldly, though his body language was equally tense and worried about Akaran's positioning.
It took only a moment for understanding to reach Akihiko about his ex, the firecracker, the only woman whom he'd had feelings for that were even a thousandth of what he felt for Akaran. "You're not possibly mine," he countered despite it almost being like looking in a mirror. "I knew her years ago, but we only - we didn't - you can't possibly be this old."
The kid scoffed disrespectfully. "We hail from the Zenshin. Zelel oversees us and as such, we move through time as Zelel wishes; I was put through a schism." The kid finally put the blade away, finally, seeming to calm down. "You ******** up," the kid summarized shortly, folding his arms. Akihiko turned to Akaran, looking incredulous. "You don't believe this either, do you?" He asked, suspecting this to be a prank or a joke.
β±β°β±It was only when the kid retracted his knife that Akaran would do the same. The bone slide back into place in his forearm before his lowered his hand. He looked down at the child's face with a warm gaze. His facial expression changed quickly from hostility to much more friendly and even a bit affectionate. How could Aka not feel this way about someone who so closely resembled the only person he ever loved? When the child said that his mother, Keiko, died of heartache he rubbed the back of his neck with regret. "Sorry kid. Heart attacks can be so sudden." Akaran thought that heartache meant that she had a cardiovascular condition. Other than that, Aka was able to follow along pretty well. This was not a matter of logic but of the heart and he had a deep feeling that the kid's words were true. "It's true, many people's aging was screwed up by the schi-sm." Aka was certainly not well-read in this matter but he did notice that some people aged way too quickly and others way too slowly since then. The oni looked away from Akihiko's completely shocked face and returned his warmth to the boy. "Well kid, I'm Akaran Ka-gu-ya. I'm A-ki-hi-ko's partner since your mom. It's nice to meet you. What's your name? Aki junior?" Akaran hunched over and patted the short lad on the head affectionately. Aka's smile made it feel as if he felt a deeper connection to the kid because it was like looking at Aki himself. After a few moments he would dig some money out of his pocket and put it in the kid's hand. "Here little dude. Go get yourself a snack and give us a few minutes to talk. Don't worry, if we run you'll definitely catch us." Akaran offered him a wink before backing away and sitting back down beside Akihiko. If the child did as Aka requested then he would continue. If there was going to be a bad argument then he did not want the kid to be here for it. "You know he's yours, Aki. Even a blockhead like me can see it. It's like you're lookin' in the damn mirror!" Akaran was forthright in his opinion. He supposed that it could all just be a genjutsu or elaborate ploy but the fact that a kid who looked exactly like Aki and knew the name of the woman that Aki was with spoke volumes to his credibility. "Is this what you were being weird about before? At the fire mountain? Did you know she was pregnant?!" Aka questioned Aki and he expected complete honesty or they were going to have some words.

Hikaru was starting to warm up to Akaran, mimicking the samurai's more relaxed body language and taking kindly to Akaran's confirmation of what he was saying. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Akaran. He actually laughed - more like giggled - at the Aki junior comment. "No, no, I'm Hikaru Zenshin." The kid's face lit up just like Akihiko's had at the sound of Akihiko getting to eat more barbeque frog. Speaking of, the two wore the same confused expression when Akaran handed over the ryo, but the kid relented as he figured that Akaran was going to tell Akihiko off (hopefully) and so he let himself wander off despite threatening homicide only a moment prior.
Akihiko's discomfort downstairs was alleviated quickly when Akaran turned on him. Akihiko's eyes lit in anger at Akaran's adamant disagreement. "We don't know that anything he's saying is true. And no, of course I didn't ******** know. You think I'd lie to you? You think I'd lie about that?" His voice had risen as he asked his questions, and he stopped to find himself standing up and leaning over the table angrily, and the realization humbled him moreso than the curious eyes from concerned festival-goers. He huffed a few calming breaths and sat back down, but his eyes didn't leave Akaran's. "I didn't know," he confirmed earnestly. And then his eyes dropped to his hands. "I suspected."
He let his confession hang in the air for a moment. "I suspected because Keiko hadn't reached out in a long while. I suspected because I had heard in the land of rivers that they hadn't seen her come by for mercenary work. She could have been dead," he reasoned. "But... there was another possible - maybe more possible - outcome. That our last, er, meeting, had resulted in pregnancy. She didn't reach out to me, Akaran. She never told me. You have to believe me. I didn't know. That was a while before I met you. He should be, oh god, three years old." His voice cracked, and he covered his eyes with his hands, not wanting Akaran to see too much.
"If... if he's mine, Akaran, then that means I missed it. I missed out on my opportunity to be a dad. And Keiko's gone, and she... I mean, ********, Akaran. Did she think I was so horrible I was unfit to be a father? Wasn't worth notifying? s**t, if she wanted to do a single parent thing, I still could have, could have sent them something. Anything. But she never said a word. Is it that unthinkable, that I could want a family? Am I that cancerous?" And the unthinkable did happen, as if things couldn't get worse, because despite Akihiko covering his eyes, it was clear he was crying.
β±β°β±Aki standing up and shouting at him in defensive anger was not new. Aka was startled but forgiving because he knew that this was not his true feelings and that it was all overwhelming him. The only reason that Aka had come down hard on him is that he knew that otherwise Aki would have retreated inward and shrugged this off. When Akihiko started breaking down Akaran immediately moved to sit at his side. He wrapped his arms around him in support without hesitation. When he began openly weeping Akaran panicked a little. This was entirely out of character for Akihiko and this meant that this event was Earth-shaking for him. It rocked his foundation to have his past confronted in this way. A fragment of his own history had found his way to the mercenary and it was overwhelming. As he tightly squeezed Aki he would respond with a soothing voice to help him calm down. "That's not true. I don't know why she did that but obviously, she didn't know your heart like I do. If you had known then there's nothing that boy would've wanted that he wouldn't have gotten from you. I know better than anybody how you spoil the people you love." He wanted to build Akihiko back up. This all came down to what they had fought about many times before. This idea that Aka judged Aki and felt morally superior to him. Aka knew in his heart of hearts that he needed to reassure him well and often to the contrary. "I just need you to know that I love you..." Akaran's own voice cracked as Akihiko continued sobbing next to him. He felt his own soul being laid bare before the equally vulnerable mercenary. "I wouldn't change anything about you." Akaran quickly began wiping the tears out of his eyes with his fingers as he focused on his breathing. He did what he could to keep it together so that his voice could leave this throat. "Your past, your mistakes, the stuff that still makes us different. I wouldn't change none of it." Akaran shook his head to bolster his point but also to shake away the tears. He was emotionally tender as he contineud. "If he's your son then he's a part of you. I think I could love him because he's a piece of who you are. I don't care that you had him with someone else. I can help you. We can do this together." The ever noble Akaran would not back down in the face of this challenge. He would not allow Akihiko to let himself down by stepping away from this opportunity. Aka believed that something beautiful could blossom from this.

Akaran's words were warming, but Akihiko didn't want them. "If you know my heart... and you immediately thought I would lie about being a father to shirk the responsibility, then that must be who I am, right? You immediately thought the worst." His voice was ruined as he admitted it out loud. "Because I am. I am the worst." His heart ached. He knew how protective he'd been of the Yamaokas, how warm their family dynamic had been and how much he had appreciated that environment for himself as fleeting as it was. But it hurt. He knew good and bad were stories for children, narrow categories to push one agenda or another but he was a bad father, wasn't he? Bad because he was unsuitable, unthinkable.
How could he be surprised that Hikaru would come to the same conclusion without knowing him a day if Akaran, who knew him better than anyone else, also thought he'd avoid being a dad?
He was a rotten, sick thing. And he did believe Akaran loved him regardless, but he was selfish for thinking he deserved to be a father. Keiko was a decent judge of character despite all of Akihiko's insistence that she wasn't every time they slept together. She must have seen who he really was. It left him with a sour reality. "I can't go back and raise him. He hates my guts and he should. I'm an idiot for thinking I could ever have that."
β±β°β±Akaran felt his heart begin to hurt at Akihiko's response. These feelings and ideas were far more complicated than Akaran could possibly handle. He kept holding his partner and realized the depth to which he hurt his feelings with his questions. He waited for Akihiko to finish but looked at him with a pained, raw expression. "The only reason I thought you might've known is because of how you acted before. But now I see. Deep down you knew, but you didn't really wanna know. Y'know?" Even though he was not notified of this the fact that the possibility worried Akihiko at all meant that his suspicions were strong. "She's the one who cut you out and that was wrong. You could've gone looking for her to find out but maybe you knew that even if you could find her that she'd still reject you. I...can't imagine what that felt like." The uncertainty of if Akihiko was actually a father clearly weighed on him for a long time and this was the crescendo of it all. "But look, his mom died. Who else does he have? Maybe he's angry now, but if he wanted nothing to do with you then he wouldn't have gone to all this trouble to find you. Maybe he does need you now. You didn't know and couldn't have been there for him before but if you turn your back on him now that you know then that is a choice. And I...Aki...I think I could love him." Aka was unsure if it was selfish or selfless to want to develop a relationship with this child. On the one hand, he wanted to do a kind deed for someone like Hikaru who had such a hard life already but on the other he truly did want that kind of a step-parent relationship with his partner's progeny.

Akihiko was coming around to Akaran's words. He really couldn't change the past, for better or for worse. But the kid was his responsibility if he could step up to handle it. And Akaran wasn't put off by this at all; he was willing, even. "Thank you, Akaran," he said, covering the samurai's hand with his own. He wiped his face with his other hand and sighed deeply. "This is quite the bombshell before a wedding, eh?"
"A wedding?" Akihiko whipped his head around to see Hikaru standing there behind them, hip cocked and arms crossed, though his expression was confused. "A-are you sure you want to marry Akihiko?" The kid's question was earnest as he looked right at Akaran, pissing Akihiko off. "Hey, I'm not that bad," he grumbled defensively. There was a tense moment between father and son, a world of unspoken questions hanging in the air.
Before Akaran would have an opportunity to do so, Akihiko sighed and gestured to the table. "Come sit, kid. We might as well talk. You're not going to take a swing at me while Akaran is here, and he'd never let me take a shot at you, either. It's as neutral a location as we're ever gonna get." He was already set to be bad cop for an interrogation, and didn't want to suddenly warm up to the kid and make him suspicious. "You can have some of this stuff if you want. That one's frog, that's beef, those are pork," he explained as Hikaru sat down across the two of them.
"Fr-frog?" The kid asked, crinkling his nose up and acting much like Akaran had at the suggestion of it. Akihiko rolled his eyes. "Neither of you appreciate the finer things," he lamented, though he found himself stuck staring at the table between himself and his son. All the questions he wanted to ask suddenly died on his tongue as he realized he had no more obstructions to really meeting his son.
β±β°β±Akaran thought that Akihiko's son was just the cutest. His eyes became enlarged and glossy as he felt his hand being touched by Aki and as he stared at Hikaru. Even though Aki was understandably offended by Hikaru's pointed question toward him Aka would laugh it off. "Yes, I love A-ki-hi-ko more than anything. You'll see how cool he is in no time." Aka spoke in a much more jovial and lighthearted fashion in an effort to ease the tension at the table. He gave Aki an adoring gaze before returning his doting attention to Hikaru. He laughed again when Hikaru contorted his face in disgust of the frog stick. Aka shook his head vehemently at Aki before speaking to Hikaru. "Nah, we're right. Aren't we, Hi-ka-ru?" The Kaguya clansman winked and smiled playfully at Hikaru before handing him a generous amount of his own food. Since a cat caught Aki's tongue, Aka would open with some questions. "In speaking of cool. I'll bet you're the fastest kid around where you're from. Do you like to run? What do you like to do?" Aka was intensely curious as he leaned over the table and used his available hand to dotingly tousle Hikaru's hair a little. He was enjoying the opportunity to demonstrate his avuncular manner given how quickly Hikaru was taking a liking to him.

They were conspiring against him, Akihiko decided, when they doubled down on their dislike of frog. It was disrespectful, really, because Akihiko had never led Akaran wrong and as such, the samurai should have been more willing to try it. It was nothing short of betrayal. He grabbed the barbequed frog stick and took an over-exaggerated bite, pushing into Akaran with his shoulder as he moaned intentionally. "Mm, delicious frog," he insisted, and waved around the stick with the rest of it. "More for me, I guess."
Hikaru pulled a worse face and laughed nervously at the sight, saying 'ew' and dramatically turning his nose up at it. It made Akihiko's heart race, hearing his own son laugh because of him, but the moment quickly transitioned into a safe line of questioning due to Akaran. "Everyone is fast, where I'm from." But then the kid leaned in a little, face lighting up in excitement. "But I am faster than anyone else. It serves them right, considering how they turned Mom away because of her work." His expression soured at the thought, and the kid actually jutted his lip out and looked... really sad.
Akihiko wanted to kill them.
"Your mother single-handedly saved the Zenshin clan from extinction because of her quick thinking. She neutralized an explosive compound that had surrounded the temple that everyone was in to celebrate the - what is it, that s**t Zelelists in every country travel to celebrate? - oh right, the new year. Your mom sensed something was off and she used poultice from the temple storeroom in order to prevent the entire clan going up in flames. She rounded up the men behind it and the clergy told her to handle it without mentioning it ever again - to keep them 'holy' or whatever it is you Zelelists value - and killed them. Those bastar- uh, clansmen only live because of Keiko. They owe her everything."
Hikaru was visibly surprised at the news. It was clearly the first he'd heard of it, but Keiko wasn't one to brag - others did it for her, as her reputation as a mercenary was well-known - so Akihiko couldn't say he didn't expect some ignorance from the kid. "I-I didn't know that," the kid said simply. "Your mom doesn't talk about what she does. I'm not surprised." He spared a glance at Akaran, residual anger in his eyes. "She didn't deserve to be turned away."
"Then why did you abandon her?" Hikaru demanded loudly, face twisted in anger. Akihiko sighed, though it came out a little more like a growl. Back where they started.
β±β°β±Akaran laughed heartily at Akihiko's humor about the frog sticks. Hikaru's response to his question reminded him even more of Aki through his self-assuredness. It was a charming cockiness that was witty and appreciated by Aka for a long time so it was heartwarming to see. However, his heart was pained when Hikaru pouted his lip and told them that his mother was separated from her own kin. He smiled gently at Hikaru and Aki while interlacing his fingers gently with Aki's as they continued holding hands. "It sounds like your mom was a hero." He complimented her memory to support the other two although he had never met her himself. The growling and tension at the table were even more pronounced. It was to the point where Akaran had to intervene to keep it from escalating. "Hi-ka-ru, it isn't all your dad's fault, y'know. He didn't know about you. Sometimes people just drift apart. It isn't his fault and it isn't your mom's fault. I know it hasn't been easy for ya, little dude. But is this what your mom would want? Would she want you going through your life with this anger in your heart? Or would she want you to live a life for others? Don't you wanna be a hero like her?" Akaran spoke kindly and did not want to lecture or admonish him. He also did what he could to not condescend to the child. He spoke to him as his equal like it was a frank conversation between adults. Aka could certainly relate to having a father who was not always there for him. Those negative feelings would eventually be channeled into doing good for other people. Maybe Hikaru could be directed to the same path?

Class Information First Class: Taijutsu β±β°β± Berserker β Your external training and devotion to taijutsu has allowed you to have a [+1] stat increases to Strength and Endurance. Third Class: Bloodline β±β°β± Dual Ancestry β Dual Ancestry allows you to have full access to two bloodlines upon creation including all techniques, abilities, and personal attributes associated with them. For biographical purposes, your secondary bloodline may be genetic or implanted at your discretion. This discipline gives you [4] bloodline PAs to be used only for the optional attributes of your dual bloodlines on top of the [2] personal attributes you receive at base for a total of [6]. If two elemental bloodlines are chosen then the primary bloodline's elemental affinities become your base elements and you gain full access to those elements while your secondary bloodline gives you locked elemental affinities that you cannot learn ninjutsu techniques from but you gain full access to the secondary bloodline. Locked elemental affinities can be unlocked through methods such as ninjutsu class or personal attributes. Elemental affinity personal attributes are automatically allotted to locked affinities. Also, the Kaguya is able to recover faster from the drawbacks of forbidden seals following the deactivation of the seal making the stat reductions last for three posts rather than five. β±β°β± Mountain Clan | Oni are able to korabo suiton and sake techniques without the sake being reduced in strength. These can be korabo'd for one activation every two posts. In this circumstance, sake creation techniques are unnecessary but an augment needs to be paid for to korabo with the suiton technique. The Oni starts with [2] additional taijutsu styles upon creation. β±β°β± Clever Brew Master | The Oni receives two additional customs per body rank to produce new brew types. They are able to cast bloodline techniques through somatic movements. Their saketon pool is increased by 100. Hikaru's fists tightened on the table as he was standing, angrily overlooking them, and he bared his teeth at Akaran's questions. "I- I- I-... I barely knew her," he deflated. He sank down to his seat and stared at his hands again. "I was suddenly five, then suddenly ten, and I was ten for a little bit, but M-Mom was getting sick and sicker, and she talked about you but there was nothing I could do. I was only affected by the schism for maybe... maybe the last few months? My only memories of her are her being sick and frail. I just have photos of her being happier and healthier, talks from people who were willing to talk to me about her. I have nothing." His hair length covered his eyes as he spoke, but it was clear his eyes were watering.
Today was just emotional wreckage. "I don't have much of your mom, kid. But, I'm happy to reach out through the grapevine for any other mementos. She'd always had a budding interest in photography, so I think we can find something. I know she had a lot of vaults in different places - as mercenaries typically do - so I can get my hands on those. I have stories, too, but I can't bring her back. For what it's worth, I'm sorry, kid."
"You'd do that?"
"Yeah, why not. Akaran's all about heroics. And it'd be nice to help collect her things. I know she'd leave you a good inheritance to take care of yourself. I've got plenty of stories of her to help pass the time, if you wanted to come with me." It was a very tentative subject, and it left Akihiko feeling more unsure of himself than he usually ever felt. But the kid brightened at the option. "I- yeah, I want to."
Akihiko squeezed Akaran's hand without realizing it. "We can make that happen. It might not happen until after our wedding, though. It'll take me some time to hear back from colleagues about her usual haunts. Can you wait in the village?"
"Er, yeah..." Hikaru said, sounding far more unsure. Akihiko's brows furrowed, unsure why, and turned to Akaran to see if the samurai had other ideas.
