Her family unit was growing at an increasing rate lately.

Eli's latest litter were almost fully grown and soon on the way to leaving home to make it in the world by themselves. She suspected most would likely do that and she'd lose contact with them and that was fine. She didn't really hold any more or less love for her offspring as she did many other things. If they choose to return, either for visits or to return home, for whatever reason, she would welcome them back as if they'd only been gone a few days on a hunting trip. She'd taught them as much as she could about the world out there and what to expect from it. If it turned out not to be enough for some of them, well...Such was the way of life. There were a lot of her children whom she didn't know the whereabouts of. She couldn't say she missed them. She had her paws full with the ones that had stayed, anyway.

As her seven cubs grew bigger, one of the twin daughters from her second litter had given birth to eight cubs of her own. The first set of, at least known, grandchildren for the old lioness. And such beautiful little things, too, with more than half of the litter sporting these elegant swirls along their fur. She'd never seen anything quite like it. All her children had more natural patterns, mostly from her own body. Which were beautiful in their own right. She wasn't trying to pick favorites.

Eli was fortunate to have such a big family around her. Grandchildren so soon after her own litter had left her feeling more tired as of late and so she'd sought out a little break away from the high energy that eight cubs and seven hormonal teenagers brought to the group. Where she could relax on a rock under the sun and watch with lazy green eyes all the goings on of the other creatures around her.

Milan was one for traveling by night - his dark pelt prone to holding onto the heat of day. He would travel until he was curious enough about his new surroundings to stay - or he was too tired to carry on his way.

This last rising had been a mixed bag of both. He'd been traveling longer than usual - having risen before the sunset the afternoon before to hunt, and still have light to eat by without having to scan the dark for other predators after his prey. A full stomach made him sleepy - but he knew he had recently left the territory of a particularly aggressive bull elephant that had no love for lions.

So - he wandered farther from the territory after eating his fill of the bushbaby he'd caught. His feet took him into a new, unvisited territory. This was a place unfamiliar for him altogether. The sky was turning pale and he knew that soon the sun would be rising - there was already the sound of little voices rising into the early morning.

He put distance between himself and the sound of little voices and just beyond the reach of the scent of the family troup that must have taken up residency in the territory. A rocky outcropping offered a growing shadow that would, as the day progressed, offer him shade from the heat of the day.

He did not expect that at some point throughout the day a lioness would claim it to roost from. Her arrival brought him to stir, but as he lifted his head to take in her scent - it carried familiarity to the group he'd skirted that morning.

Hiding from the little ones? he asked with a rumbling chuckle - he had not moved from his place below her rock, his voice rough with sleep and disuse. He was comfortably cool and the sun was still high enough that he was in no rush to rise.

Eli hadn't caught the scent of another lion below her. Or perhaps she did and just didn't care. It was difficult to say with her. At the very least, she didn't stir very much when the voice spoke up, just turned her head slightly in the direction it came from.

"Mm. Grandmother's need their rest, too," she replied, her green eyes still watching the distant shapes of zebras. They had their own youngsters, grown enough that she could easily pick out the males play fighting with each other. They had been a great source of food for the family but soon it would be time for the herd to move on, having grazed the grass down to stubs. She hoped they would provide for another family or pride where next they settled.

"I apologize if they bothered you. Eight cubs can be noisy." It was plain he had been sleeping there before she'd unintentionally joined him, hiding away on the other side of the rock from where she'd come. "Or if my presence did."

"A grandmother has no doubt earned her rest." He agreed amicably, unconcerned by his new rock companion, it seemed. He was fairly laid back, and really - he couldn't complain when he was in her family's territory, or at least, close to it.

"No apology needed. A lion who complains about the sound of strong, healthy cubs, living boldly and thriving is a lion who deserves to spend his life alone. They were no bother." Milan said frankly.

He knew that cubs were the future. Not that his family had been particularly close, or he had any cubs of his own. He yawned wide and swallowed the dryness that had settled in his maw over the high noon hours. At her added addendum to her previous apology, he huffed a soft laugh.

"Your presence is a welcome distraction from the heat of the day and the emptiness of dreamless sleep." he assured her, his tone of voice suggested honesty, and the fact that he had yet to rise, seemingly equally unbothered by her arrival as she was by his presence.
