OWL Exams
xxxxx⇾Astronomy ~ {A} Despite Quinn's incredible spatial awareness and skill with memorization, all that's involved in the universe overwhelmed him a bit. He's a good hands-on learner, but that's made difficult when everything is a million light-years away. He did his best, and managed to pass the class, despite his struggles.
xxxxx⇾Charms ~ {EE} Quinn's grade in Charms was achieved thanks to his typical methodical approach. Practice made perfect, but he never could quite achieve perfection in Charms.
xxxxx⇾Defence Against the Dark Arts ~ {O} Defence started off as a difficult class for Quinn, but as he learned more, he was able to connect the spells to their exact results and when/where to use them. Somehow this all worked out and made it a fairly easy class. He studied hard anyway, earning top marks on the exam.
xxxxx⇾Herbology ~ {A} Quinn can barely manage to keep himself fed and watered, much less a plant. Try as he might, Quinn just never could understand how plants worked well enough to learn. The only reason he passed was on the written portion, where he'd studied. Once confronted with an actual plant, his weakness in the class shone through.
xxxxx⇾History of Magic ~ {EE} Despite his dislike of the subject matter, Quinn has a knack for remembering dates and events. All this paired with his forcing himself to study led to a pretty solid pass on the exam.
xxxxx⇾Potions ~ {O} Quinn started off trying to convince himself he'd absolutely hate potions, but it quickly came to fascinate him. All the tactile work, paired with the interesting results of combining certain ingredients worked to hold his interest. Sometimes his curiosity got the better of him, but luckily he didn't explode anything... that was visible, anyway. He studied hard to make sure he had all the theory down, then managed to easily ace the exam.
xxxxx⇾Transfiguration ~ {O} Quinn excelled at the mathematical portion of Transfiguration theory, which allowed him to get the theoretical aspects of the magic rather quickly. It was a struggle at first to connect that theory over to the practical parts, but after a bit of configuration, Quinn quickly made the leap. This is another class he likes to experiment in, sometimes to terrible results.... but it all worked out to get a top-notch score on the exams.
~~~~~~~~~~~
xxxxx⇾Alchemy ~ {O} Alchemy combined Quinn's love of both Potions and Transfiguration, plus sated his curiosities a lot. He was able to identify a lot of "what happens when..." things that would occur when he worked. He studied hard and got a perfect score.
xxxxx⇾Arithmancy ~ {O} It's just math and numbers, which are two things Quinn is adept at learning. He was able to recognize the patterns and meanings of the numbers rather quickly, which helped him to just click with the subject. Even if he hadn't studied, Quinn still would have gotten top marks.
xxxxx⇾Care of Magical Creatures ~ {A} Much like with Herbology, Quinn struggled to care for other living creatures. He did his best, but ultimately only passed on paper. The practical applications highlighted his weakness at the subject.
xxxxx⇾Cursebreaking ~ {O} Combine Quinn's love of solving puzzles and figuring out how things work with his skill in magic, and Cursebreaking became an all-around top for him. He enjoyed all the subjects the class had to offer, and was easily able to pass the exam.
xxxxx⇾Muggle Studies ~ {O} Even though he didn't take this class, Quinn is well aware of how muggle technology works. Heck, he's dismantled more things in an effort to learn how they work than the class even covered.
xxxxx⇾Mythology ~ {O} Despite his distaste for History, adding the magical and *mystical* elements to the subject made it quite fun. He liked learning all the events, then figuring out timelines and things. It was also quite interesting to see how different cultures portrayed similar characters.
xxxxx⇾Study of Ancient Runes ~ {O} Runes combined Quinn's love of memorizing and learning how things work together. He learned what all the runes meant, then figured out more complex meanings of combining them into different patterns. It all worked to earn him a fantastic score on the exam.
xxxxx⇾Wandless Magic Practice ~ {EE} Quinn credits his skill in Wandless to the fact that he's a disorganized mess. If he loses his wand, it's gone until he cleans up enough to locate it. This led to him learning a lot of practical spells to help get through the day-to-day needs. Some of the more complex spells were lost on them, because he couldn't figure out why he'd need to cast that particular spell without his wand.
xxxxx⇾Wandlore Studies ~ {A} Despite his ability to memorize almost anything, discovering the properties of wands managed to elude him. Sure, he knew what things were supposed to be, but without being able to snap the material in half, how ever would he learn what was inside to make everything work? He did well based on his theoretical knowledge, but his lack of practical application ability failed him in the end. Ultimately he passed, but only barely.
xxxxx⇾Wizard Law ~ {EE} What is law but a whole bunch of rules to memorize? He was easily able to learn about how the laws should work together, but when it came time to argue his defense, he shrank back. He was able to cite the laws, but struggled when his words were contested. He ended up getting a good score for his knowledge base, but lost some points for his fear of speaking out.
NEWT Exams
xxxxx⇾Charms ~ {O} Years of careful, methodical practice finally paid dividends. Especially given his extensive practice with Wandless magic, Quinn did surprisingly well at the NEWT level.
xxxxx⇾Defence Against the Dark Arts ~ {O} While Defence got harder in the last two years, Quinn's resolve to learn the subject also got stronger. He worked hard, doing study sessions to make sure any of the information was locked away. When it came time for the exam itself, he found he knew all the answers from several long hours of work.
xxxxx⇾Potions ~ {O} Quinn’s potions technique was always outstanding, and as he mastered theory, his experiments did better as well. The exam was difficult, but he thought through his answers, double checked them, and gave it his best. It was more than enough for the O.
xxxxx⇾Transfiguration ~ {O} Quinn’s efforts in transfiguration experiments turned out to be right on the money and at the NEWT level he found the answers he had been working towards. He was we
~~~~~~~~~~~
xxxxx⇾Alchemy ~ {O} By Potions + Transfiguration experiments, Quinn actually meant alchemical experiments. He was fascinated by the theory, studied hard, experimented plenty, and was more than happy to be able to use his insights on the NEWT exam.
xxxxx⇾Arithmancy ~ {O} Arithmancy is, at its core, math. Quinn's logical brain allows him to excel in maths based classes, meaning Arithmancy was a breeze. Just because it was easy didn't mean he didn't study quite hard for it, however. He put in the work to ensure his grade in the class.
xxxxx⇾Cursebreaking ~ {O} Cursebreaking was a tricky class, but with help from friends and family, Quinn figured out the strategies that worked best for him. Once he fell into rhythm, it was easy to study and master the subject.
xxxxx⇾Muggle Studies ~ {O} Being from a muggle/magic household, Quinn didn't need to take the class to sit the exam. Quinn had long since dismantled most of the appliances and tech learned about in the class... and usually put it back together... usually.
xxxxx⇾Mythology ~ {O} Despite his dislike of history, Quinn really enjoyed Mythology. Something about all the different ways people viewed the same things fascinated him, leading him to study extra until he was confident in all his answers.
xxxxx⇾Study of Ancient Runes ~ {O} Runes was an interesting subject for Quinn. Normally he didn't like linguistic studies, but something about the class held his attention. He practiced extra until he felt comfortable using runes for their intended communication. Despite worrying about the exam, it all seemed easy enough to do.
xxxxx⇾Wizard Law ~ {O} Quinn doubled down on working on communicating his position–in writing if not speaking, and built upon his knowledge base this way. When it came time to present his case on the NEWT, he simply read off his notes, channeling his fear into straightforward statements. It might have been accidental, but it came across as cool confidence, earning him the O.
All O Justification Quinn spends like 99% of his time either studying or tinkering. Since electronics don't work in Hogwarts, more of his tinkering time is dedicated to studying. He also has about a million family members, all whom have taken all the various classes he took. It allowed him to gain extra insight from dozens of others, all interested in helping him succeed.
