Name:Cheyaden (chay YAH den)
Age: 17
Nameday: 3560.09.22
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: Former Minecraft/ now LC worker
Rank:Apprentice
Location: High Reaches Weyr

Physical Description: 5'10" or so and fit-if-narrow, Cheyaden lives a life of near-constant motion punctuated by moments of utter stillness. Sandy brown hair is rough cut and short, as though he does his best to trim it himself. His eyes are sea-glass green. His build makes even his jaw seem long; his smiles are quick and slight. His hands are the only point of grace about him, being long-fingered and very deft. He wears serviceable clothing with no extra flash or ornamentation, but it is all in good repair.

Personality: Cheyaden's biggest challenge is simply standing sill, most of the time that he's awake. He is a fidgeter: if his fingers are not drumming out the rhythm to some song that only he can hear, then his foot is twitching, or his leg is bouncing as he sits and polishes a boot. He is not one to flinch or startle, so any assumption that his twitches make him flighty would be wrong. As a matter of fact, when startled or surprised, Cheyaden is anything but flighty: he does almost-breathlessly still. Even his telltale finger-drumming will stop if he is abruptly approached.

Nor does his constant need to move mean that he's in any way distractable. Give him a task to do and he will see it through to the end, no matter the time required to complete it. Whether he has to rise early or go to bed late, he will see it done and do it without complaint. He is not the sort to *volunteer* himself for extra chores or duties, but once assigned, rest assured that he will not try to pawn them off on anyone else, either. They are his responsibility and his alone.

Though he isn't chatty, he is comfortable in the company of others. When asked, he'll offer his opinion, though he won't be the first to jump in with a suggestion or correction. If there is an argument, he will watch and listen, but not take a vocal side. Fights are the last resort of any confrontation in his mind, though he is surprisingly quick and capable of holding his own. He would simply prefer to walk away before things get that far.

He does not enjoy being in the spotlight. Too much attention makes i hard to breathe. He will not spend much time hunkered down in the shadows -- solitude doesn't suit him any more than glory does -- but he's more than happy to stay on the edges of the action, so he can be relied on to keep secrets and he will gladly listen to jokes or woes, but it's best not to rely on him to have your back in a brawl.

In a small group, however? Cheyaden has a fantastic imagination, and in a one-on-one with a friend, that is where it shines. He lives a heroic life in his imagination and has a way with spinning his dreams and fantasies into stories that can be surprising. But after all, doesn't everyone want to be the hero of their own dreams?

Positive Trait List dedicated, steadfast, imaginative
Negative Trait List hesitant, lacks confidence, restless

History: Cheyaden was born at Crom Hold. His family for generations had been miners and smiths and he had absolutely no aspiration to anything else for himself. He apprenticed o the Smithcraft at 10, and set about learning the basics of the craft. Despite an inability to keep his hands -- or any other bit of himself -- still for more than a few moments, he was taken with the beauty and intricacy of some of the jewelry made in the Hall and thought, perhaps one day, when he'd learned enough, he might be able to home his talents there. Until then, he took to lessons and he was a good student.

Thread returned to Pern when he was 11. A terrifying thing, no question, but not something that touched him too directly, by a stroke of good fortune. His parents and his siblings all made it through that First Fall unscathed and though the fear of what *could* have happened stole a few nights of sleep from him, Cheyaden moved on.

No, it was not the threat of Thread that sent him running from the Hall, but rather a fight between his father and the head of another family. Gems and fine ore had been disappearing for some months during Cheyaden's 15th turn and there were rumors and speculation filling the halls. His father stumbled on some evidence that pointed the finger of blame for the thefts toward anoother man, a journeyman who had always been somewhat at odds with Cheyaden's father.

But before an investigation could formally begin, Cheyaden's father was killed in an accident in which he was clipped by an overloaded mining cart, fell, and struck his head. It was ruled a tragic incident with no one at fault but cruel fate.

The return of a portion of missing ore on his mother's workbench in the hall was called an inventory error.

The figh that landed his older brother in the infirmary with a broken arm was just a case of boys being boys and letting temper win out over good sense.
And at his mother's request, Cheyaden had a sudden mission from his mother to take his younger sister out of Crom, and to sanctuary at High Reaches Weyr. For a time, only for a while. Long enough to let things settle and memories fade.

So he did. He and Adeyanah came to the Weyr, and both took up positions working in the lower caverns, until Cheyaden was asked if he would Stand.
The letter still come from his mother at Crom. She has not invited them to come home.

Other: Someone could have Adeyanah. smile

I'm a little confused by the part of Cheyaden's history where his mother sends him on a mission to High Reaches Weyr. Weyrs don't just accept people, and certainly not for the period of time we're talking about here. He's too young to be a journeyman, so he definitely wouldn't have been assigned there for that reason. If they had picked him up or rescued him and he had nowhere else to go and he wound up having a skill they needed, then maybe they would've considered it. With Thread's return there's been an influx of people wanting to get into High Reaches and a shortage of resources as a result.

In general, borders are less open than they were before Threadfall, but even before it they were less open than I think most people imagine. In short, he needs an actual reason to be there - plus a reason that the Weyr might've kept his little sister as well. More than likely they would have been sent to another neighboring Hold by the Weyr, as Weyrs aren't set up to have a surplus of civilians. Especially non-weyrbred ones.

How can we tweak this to make it work with what you had in mind? We'll try to expand on borders/Weyrs/Holds/Halls a little more in the future so this type of thing doesn't come up as much.
