The Payne family has resided in the UK for centuries. The clan was previously known as a family of healers and priests, though as of the last two-hundred-and-some-odd years, they have been known strictly as a family of morticians after settling in Winchester and opening the Payne Funeral Home & Mortuary.

Despite their close relationship with all things death, the Paynes are an exceptionally long-lived family, most living well into their nineties. Ironically, it was the family's first known wizard, Herschel Payne, that was met with an early demise via a fallen bookshelf in his wife's heavily-cluttered store. He always warned her penchant for hoarding wares would be someone's undoing.

It was Ursula's great-great-grandmother, Cybil Hemlock, that was the first family seer chosen by the stars. After that was her grandmother, Althea Hemlock, and then herself. It is unknown why the stars have chosen to skip generations, or if that will always be the case.

Although Ursula's adopted granddaughter, Moira, is every bit a Payne Seer in her family's eyes, it is Uriel--the family's first male seer--that carries on the Hemlock Seer gene as the fourth of his bloodline.

Family Registry:

Herschel Payne (9/19/1961 - 1/7/2030) Muggleborn, Hufflepuff. Death by blunt force trauma. Continues to haunt his wife, unwilling to part from her prematurely. Ghostly companion, former Mortician.

Dead; unable to part from his wife, Herschel has chosen to remain forever on the mortal plane as a ghost. He is almost exclusively with Ursula, however sometimes he stays behind from her travels to haunt the fortune shop where he died, so that he may keep his grandchildren company. He was killed by a fallen bookshelf, and buried under a pile of grimoires and other knick-knacks. He is buried at the Payne Funeral Home & Mortuary, where he dedicated most of his life.

Known to the wizarding community and muggle Winchester as "Madame Ursula", Ursula has been telling fortunes at her shop for decades. In recent years she has chosen to retire, and has passed the mantle of Madame Ursula on to her granddaughter, Moira, so that she may travel the world. She is the third generation of the Hemlock family seers.

DREAM JOB (What career does your character want?)
CURRENT OCCUPATION (What career does your character have?)

xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

BATTY Theoā€™s a bit of an eccentric, sure, but donā€™t get it confusedā€“the manā€™s a genius in his own right. Heā€™s never been one to think inside the box, always preferring to experiment and eager to apply new approaches to familiar challenges to see what comes of it.

PUMPKIN This man is sweet as pie with a warm and inviting spirit despite his dreary surroundings. He is nothing but a family man at heartā€”and everyone is his familyā€”so he is always waiting with comforting words and a listening ear to whoever might need it.

SANGUINE Even with hands dripping of blood, Theo looks on the brighter side of things. Life, finite as it is, is full of endless possibilities and therefore each person, and each day, is precious. Though things may sometimes go awry, Theo firmly believes there is always a reason, and that each step forward will lead to something even more magnificent than the last.

RITUALISTIC Tradition and routine are important to Theopolis Payne. He starts every morning the same, and looks forward to fulfilling each family tradition with a new memory to cherish each time.

TRICKSY Theo could be considered a bit of a jokester with a morbid sense of humor. One of his favorite things is to come up with puns related to death. After all, itā€™s important to laugh at work! The occasional prank against his family isnā€™t out of the ordinary, either, thoughā€¦ Not everyone appreciates his jokes, especially if it involves posing as a cadaver to give someone an innocent freight.

SPELL-BINDING Payne men are known charmers, at least thatā€™s what his parents always said. This holds true for Theo in any case. Though humanity can be exhausting in large doses, Theo is full of charisma and since coming into his own, has never had much difficulty in forging friendships or finding a fling or twoā€¦ Or three. Of course the latter is mostly in the past. Beyond a joking flirtatious banter here and there, he is loyal only to his beloved Aveline.

LIKES
ā–  Dark humor.
ā–  Stylish eyewear.
ā–  The solemn quiet of the morgue.
ā–  ā€œTackyā€ Knick-knacks. Theyā€™re just fun. A lamp shaped like a leg? Brilliant!
ā–  The Arts. Theo enjoys observing all forms of creativity.

DISLIKES
ā–  When people are needlessly cruel. Children especially. Itā€™s sad, knowing such innocence is being tainted by dreadful parenting.
ā–  Dramatics are all well and goodā€”Theo loves some tea. There is a line, however, and he finds that he quite dislikes when someoneā€™s drama puts a needless wedge into outside relationshipsā€¦ Especially during funerals, when one should be honoring and celebrating the life of the deceased rather than focusing on their own selfish antics. Completely dishonorable.
ā–  Judgemental people. Particularly those claiming to be devout to the religion where ā€œthou shall not judge.ā€ Hypocrites in general, really.
ā–  How death always seems to bring out the worst in people. Of course, heā€™s no exception.
ā–  Carrots. Raw or cooked, it doesnā€™t matter. There is nothing redeemable about them!

STRENGTHS
ā–  Self-confidence. So what if people think heā€™s odd? Heā€™s running a successful business, has a happy marriage with his beautiful wife, and two loving children. Heā€™s doing just fine, thank you.
ā–  Has extensive knowledge of all things morbid or relating to the human body.

WEAKNESSES
ā–  Can be a little naive.
ā–  Doesnā€™t always consider both sides of a disagreement, leading to frustration and confusion for the other party.

DESIRES
ā–  For one of his children to pursue the family business.
ā–  To spend some time traveling with his wife.

FEARS
ā–  For one of his children to wind up on his table one day.

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

EARLY CHILDHOOD Theopolis was the only child of Herschel and Ursula Payne. Their family might have been small, but they were tight-knit, and they were happy. Growing up in a mortuary never minded him one bit. He made friends with the ghosts, who were practically family themselves, and played with his dog, a tiny little bundle of black fluff named Zero. At the tender age of 8, as his father before him, Theo began to learn the mortuary business from a hands-on standpoint. Getting up close and personal with the cadavers never bothered him one bitā€“instead, a morbid fascination grew, and Theo found himself learning everything he could about the human body and the process of death. He may have been bullied for it in primary school, sure. But that was fine. His parents loved him for who he was anyway.

SCHOOL YEARS
Theo was an exceptional student. So long as a subject held his interest, he absorbed knowledge like a sponge. He played Quidditchā€“did quite well, in factā€“and loved nothing more than to explore the mysterious of Hogwarts castle. As the years passed, he found himself spending more and more time in the hospital wing. This wasnā€™t because he was prone to injury, but rather, Theo simply enjoyed watching the nurse work. He offered to help where he could, and continued to learn as much as he could.

In comparison to his reception in Primary School, one might say Theo was popular. He had several friends, and there was hardly anyone he couldnā€™t get along with. He was made prefect, and maintained his status amongst the top of his class. There was a girl a few years below him by the name of Nari Choi. For some reason, she seemed drawn to him, and as such Theo gladly took her under his wing. As it turned outā€“not that he was particularly interestedā€“Nari was betrothed to another boy in their house named Everett Siddall. Theo had never thought much of the younger delinquent before then, but as he grew jealous of Theoā€™s thriving mentorship with his fiancee? Well, how could he not have fun with that? Thus began the incredibly one-sided rivalry of Everett Siddall and Theo Payne. It was all quite cute, really. Theo might have pursued him if Everett wasnā€™t already so dedicated to an arranged marriage. He would miss their banters after graduation.

POST-GRADUATION
Beyond the occasional check-in over the years from his former protege, that was pretty much it for his fun with Nari and Everett. In the years following graduation Theo worked at the mortuary as was always planned, and did some traveling with his family. By the time he was 25 heā€™d gone to Egypt, Greece, India, Israel and Romania. Though heā€™d had his share of romance, nothing had ever quite clicked until a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he quite literally fell for one Aveline Dupont. She was a gorgeous woman, and once she caught his eye, he found himself unable to look awayā€¦ Leading to a stumble down some stairs. Lucky for him, Aveline was happy to patch him right up. A worldwind romance followed during his month in America, eventually ending in a spur-of-the-moment proposal to return to the UK with him that adventurous Aveline practically jumped to accept. With both families in proximity, they were married the night before returning home. Was it fast? Yes, but neither of them ever had a single regret.

Theo and Aveline were like two pieces of a puzzle. Aveline took straight away to work at the mortuary, much better at dealing with grieving customers than Theo ever thought himself to be. The two agreed they wanted a large family and set to work. As it turned out, having children was much harder than they ever expected it to be. A year passed, and then another. A trip to the healers, then another, but never anything to show for it. Somewhere in the mix, Herschel died in an accident at his motherā€™s shop, leaving the mortuary solely to the struggling couple.
It was a tragedy the day Nari Choiā€“no, Nari Siddallā€“passed away. Theo hadnā€™t expected Everett to come to him about the preparations, but he was honored to be the one to transition Nari to her final resting place. She was gone entirely too young, killed by a spell meant to protect her, but what was truly heart-wrenching was the small children she had left behind. Small children that were very much alive, but not a light to be had in their eyes. He wished there was something more he could do.

After years of trying, Theo and Aveline had pretty well given up. It was only after a fortune from his mother, about a little one with the same sight as she, that they regained any hope. When they finally made the trip to Woolā€™s, and saw a little red-headed girl with a familiar dull gaze playing alone with her teddy, they knew they would have to bring her home. It didnā€™t take long at all for the light to come back to Moiraā€™s dark, dark eyes. Before Theo knew it, he was Daddy. He couldnā€™t have been happier with his little poppet. Years passed further, and once again at the tender age of 8, it was time for another Payne to be ushered into the family business. Moira took to it just fine. Theo loved nothing more than to teach his little girl.

It was a sad day when Moira finally left for Hogwarts, but it wasnā€™t long after that Theo and Aveline had received the shock of their lives: Aveline was finally pregnant. They thought it would never happen. Nine months later, sure enough, little Uriel was in their arms squirming and crying and very much there.

After that the family settled into a routine. Theo was quite happy with the way his life turned out. There were ups and downs, absolutelyā€”seeing those he knew and cared for wind up on his table was certainly an unwelcome occasion, but he took each loss in stride, honored to at least be the one to guide them through their final journeys.

DREAM JOB He hasnā€™t quite settled for himself yet. Maybe a surgeon? His sister is pretty keen on him taking over the mortuary in her stead, though.
CURRENT OCCUPATION Student. Occasional helper in the Payne Family Mortuary and Madame Ursulaā€™s Fortune Shop. "Unpaid Intern", of course.

xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

STRAIGHTFORWARD If thereā€™s one thing growing up in a mortuary taught him, itā€™s that life is short and so, so easily wasted. As a result, Uriel doesnā€™t like to dilly-dally or waste his time beating around the metaphorical bush. He believes in honesty above all else for better or worse. As a friend he is truly loyal and wants only the best for others, so heā€™ll often be the first to call someone out when theyā€™re going too far or need to be brought back down to Earth. This may result in some hurt feelings initially, and for that heā€™s truly sorryā€“but heā€™s prepared to build them back up and send them back out better equipped to try again.

IDEALIST Uriel doesnā€™t take things at face value, instead preferring to ponder why things are as they are. Surely there has to be a reason when something goes awry, and surely there must be a way to set things right. In the grand scheme of things, the world canā€™t truly be as bleak as it appears. If people would just take action, would just stand true, everything could work itself out for the better. Uriel is not the type to idly stand by and let misfortune happenā€“he will do anything in his limited power to set things as they should be, be it through motivating others to reach their potential and provide support from the sidelines, or getting his hands dirty himself. If he comes off as impractical then so be it. At least he has compassion.

OBSERVATIONAL As soon as he was old enough to be quiet and keep his hands to himself, Uriel was dressed up and brought to funerals to learn the family business. Since kids rarely wanted to play with him, there wasn't much else to do besides watch and learn. If he wasn't learning from his parents, he was doing so from his grandmother, or his sister, or her friends. Uriel quickly understood before he could put it into words that if he wanted to do anything, he was best off watching first. Watch and learn. Ask questions. Recognize when it was okay to ask questions or offer to help, and recognize when it was time to shut up, step back, and just observe. As it turned out, Uriel quite liked to learn, and even more-so enjoyed putting his lessons to practice and cementing that knowledge within him. Whether it was music, wandlore, plants, mortuary work, or divination, he approached each task with an open mind and open ears.

WARM Contrary to popular belief, Uriel is not "cold as a corpse". Upon getting to know him one would discover he is a genuinely kind person at his core, patient and welcoming to friendship. He's a good listener that refrains from passing judgment and is someone that can be relied on.

INDIVIDUALISTIC Okay, he gets it. He comes off as a weird kid--graveyards are spooky and black is bleak. The whole talking to ghosts schtick probably hasn't helped his case, but aren't his quirks a good thing? Uriel is quite comfortable with who he is as a person and doesn't plan to compromise himself for anyone or anything. Life's too short to waste it pretending to be something you're not. That being said, he admires those who are also unapologetic in simply being themselves and stray from the dreadfully dull line of "normalcy". Weirdos are more fun, anyway.

LONELY It wasn't often growing up that Uriel was able to spend time with children his own age. Sometimes he got to tag along with his older sister and her friends, or her friends' younger siblings, but it wasn't quite the same as if he had friends of his own. Though occasionally he would try to engage fellow children at the funeral home, those children were never much interested in playing as they were wrapped up in their own lives and grieving. As for his classmates? Well... Children could be cruel. The ghosts at home were welcome company, but it wasn't quite the same as having someone he could physically interact with.

LIKES
āœ– The smell of incense
āœ– Coffee, on the rare occasion heā€™s allowed to have some. His parents told him theyā€™d much prefer he wait until heā€™s at least 13 to drink it regularly. Until then, teaā€™s quite nice as well.
āœ– Flower Language. He thinks itā€™s fascinating how people can communicate so many feelings with a single flower, and entire messages with just one bouquet.
āœ– Quality time with his family.
āœ– Festivals where a bunch of people come together. Times when people are happy and cheerful and make memories and even the ghosts are more lively.

DISLIKES
āœ– Roses. Besides being allergic theyā€™re just done to death, and he always manages to p***k himself on the thorns no matter how careful.
āœ– Half-assed work. If youā€™re going to do something, put some effort into it. He hates when itā€™s obvious people donā€™t care.
āœ– His mumā€™s gumbo. One time, he ate it while he had a stomach bug, and wellā€¦ He just canā€™t quite look at it the same anymore.
āœ– The smell of open cadavers during embalming. If they smoked itā€™s absolutely dreadful, enough to make even his dad gag. You never quite get used to the smell.
āœ– Labels and quick judgements. Yeah, yeah, he gets it. Heā€™s the creepy funeral home kid that wears nothing but black and makes a habit of talking to ghosts and predicting the future! Spooky! Thatā€™s all that matters, right? Not like thereā€™s anything more to him than that, right? People can be so shallow. But you know, itā€™s just a little bit his own fault. Sometimes itā€™s just too fun to lean into the role and spook some people. He takes it much less kindly when he sees other people being teased, however.

STRENGTHS
āœ– Eye for detail. Observing people and objects. Good at reading people.
āœ– Quite comfortable in his own skin. Has a good sense of humor and is able to laugh at himself, so itā€™s hard to make him feel insecure.

WEAKNESSES
āœ– A little socially awkward from lack of close friendships. Comes off as polite, but distant and a little too formal sometimes.
āœ– Has a tendency not to finish things until the last minute; not because he procrastinates, but because heā€™ll take so much time to make sure itā€™s as perfect as possible. Nothing frustrates him quite like pouring so much effort into something only to see a glaring flaw after itā€™s all said and done, and no longer being able to go back and fix it.

DESIRES
āœ– To have friends that accept him as he is. Preferably living. Justā€¦ Donā€™t tell Adelaide he said that.
āœ– To do his family proud. Itā€™s not a hard taskā€“they always tell him how proud they are, after all. He just wants to continue to do well and make them happy.

FEARS
āœ– Being buried alive. Uriel has extensively researched how to escape such a situation, but the thought still unsettles him.
āœ– Being embalmed alive. Canā€™t plan for that, now can you?

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

EARLY CHILDHOOD After years of trying to conceive, Theopolis Payne and his wife Aveline all but gave up on children of their own. It was a few short years after the adoption of their daughter, Moira, that Uriel finally came along, a happy blessing to complete their small family.

The Paynes have run a funeral home and mortuary in Winchester for generations. The property lays on a cemetery, peaceful and beautiful and ripe for exploring. On a sunny Summer day Moira and her friend Wren were meant to be watching, little Uriel crawled himself into an open grave. How was he supposed to know there was a hole in the ground? Isn't the floor supposed to be flat? Much to Moira's relief, Uriel's landing was miraculously soft with not a bump or bruise to be had. Fortunately for them after, her friends Nimbus and Eion climbed (fell) down to his rescue. Uriel was more carefully watched outside after that. It helped that the resident ghosts had taken a liking to the little tyke, but even so, Uriel was extra careful where he was going from then on.

As he grew, he watched and learned from his sister and her friends. Nimbus taught him the basics of music theory, so he took up learning to play his grandpaā€™s old viola. He picked up an interest in wandlore and potions from Wren and enjoyed asking questions as he watched him work. Besides his sister and her boyfriend, nearly all of the older kids in Urielā€™s life seemed to have an affinity towards plants, so he managed to learn a thing or two. Wren and Nimbus had younger siblings to spend time with as well, but Uriel didnā€™t spend much time with them. They were all a little too old, or a little too young for him to properly relate with. Still, he was always nice to them and would join in if asked. It was better than the alternativeā€“like Moira, Uriel didnā€™t have the easiest time dealing with his classmates in primary school. He wished he could have been homeschooled. It would have been better.

Uriel's best friend growing up was a young ghost named Adelaide. Though she tragically died at the age of 10, sheā€™d been haunting the cemetery for hundreds of years. She was a little impatient, and surprisingly clingy for a ghost, but he liked her all the same. She was also friends with the youngest Siddall, Aria, and the three would occasionally have picnics at Adelaideā€™s tombstone. Ariaā€™s cooking hurt. How did she manage to make egg salad so spicy? She left this world too soon. Though he canā€™t recall her voice anymore, Uriel will always remember her smile and her terrifying love of spice. If only Adelaide would forgive her for departing.

As was Payne Tradition, the first time Uriel was brought down to the morgue in their basement was at the age of seven to observe Theo in his work. It started off just by watching the embalming process. Uriel was never scared, but seeing the corpses, and the incisions, and the organs, it all twisted his stomach something fierce at first. He wasnā€™t asked to get his hands dirty quite yet, but Moira warned with a sweet smile that it would be much sooner than he might think. Only several weeks later, he would accompany his father and sister in the collection of corpses. Uriel remembered the day of the Winchester Massacre well: The emptiness in Sparrowā€™s eyes as she stared at the aftermath. The stench of smoke, the crumble of fallen ceiling beneath his shoe. Locating each body, some of whom were charred beyond recognition. People he knew, but would never really know. They were a kind family. Uriel didnā€™t know much at his age, but he knew with certainty not one of them deserved this.

Grandma Ursula sat down with him and Moira shortly after the funeral. Uriel knew that the three of them had a knack for divination more than most, or so they said, but he never really knew what being a seer meant until then. He remembered the evening Moira had her prophecyā€“they were all at the Winchester Estate, during one of their many parties. Moira was sitting with Uriel and Aria and some of the younger guests, having a simple conversation when she seemed to leave her own body. Her eyes were far away, and though it was her voice and he was too small to remember the words, they didnā€™t seem like her, a vague premonition of death and unity. Knowing now what it was didnā€™t sit well with him. If Moira knew this was going to happen, why didnā€™t she stop it? Even if the Siddalls couldnā€™t have been saved, shouldnā€™t they have been able to connect the dots and stop the latest tragedy? It was the only time he had ever seen Moira cry. Ursula explained to him that fate is what it is, and that unfortunately, once it is set in motion it cannot be changed. Uriel rejected such a notion. The future isnā€™t something that can be set in stone, no matter what any prophecy says. It just canā€™t. If it ever happened to him one day, which Ursula seemed to think it might, he wanted to be able to prove it wrong.

Uriel learned more and more about the family businesses as he grew, to the point he could perform certain procedures on his own so long as he was supervised. He could stitch a cadaver, knew how to inject the embalming fluids, how to apply the cosmetics, and had a firm handle on human anatomy. Though he was aware learning at such a young age was a little unorthodox, he didnā€™t mind it. Bonding time with Dad was always welcome, no matter what they were doing. There was one incident though, shortly before his 11th birthday, that they took a cadaver to the embalming table and Uriel was certain heā€™d seen the old man breathe. Theo didnā€™t think much of it, but as they were prepping, the man woke up and gave Uriel a freight! As it turned out this wasnā€™t an entirely uncommon occurrence. Uriel could only imagine what might have happened had he awoken mid-incision. Of course Moira thought it was the funniest thing when he told her. Ah, yes, childhood trauma. Freaking hilarious.

To the surprise of hardly anyone, Uriel received his Hogwarts acceptance letter. Honestly, he was relieved at the prospect of leaving his muggle school. His sister had clearly thrived at Hogwarts, so it stood to reason Uriel would find happiness there as well, right? The only one that hadnā€™t been happy to hear the news was Adelaide, who was convinced Uriel was no longer going to be her friend now that he would be going off and meeting new kids. He did his best to convince her otherwise, and up until September 1 she seemed better. He didnā€™t miss that raspberry she blew at him after he said his goodbyes, though. Rude.

Just a few days before he left, Moira and Eion had their twins: Delphi and Dahlia Delacroix. It was a traumatic birth that nearly took his sister's life, but praise the stars, everyone made it out okay. It was difficult to leave his new nieces and recovering sister, especially in her bizarrely emotional state, but Yuri knew she was in safe hands with Eion and their parents until he could see them all again for Yule.

ENEMIES Sir Abernathy Abernathy the Second of Enderā€™s Grove ā€“ A frankly rude ghost that comes around to haunt the Cemetery occasionally. Sir Abernathy is probably the best source of ghostly gossip in this hemisphereā€“or so he claimsā€“but Uriel thinks heā€™s a cold-hearted (metaphorically and literally) elitist with a very annoying sense of ethics. (Mostly because while honorable, Sir Abernathy is also a rules stickler and will report Every Single Thing Uriel does or says to his parents. Not that his parents usually care about all that, but the ONE TIME he stole an extra brownie and sat on Madam St. Aubinā€™s giant block of a memorial, Sir Abernathy went tattling to his mum about where that brownie had gone, and went blabbing to the whole bloody cemetery about it. Whatā€™s he on such a high horse about, anyway? His name is Abernathy Abernathy for Merlinā€™s sake! Someone could stand to learn some humility.
