Jean smiled wide at the ball in his hand, letting out a soft chuckle and holding it up to Ancil. "Look, Ancil, we have a new friend!" He was excited as child... which made sense since really his mind was technically still that of a ten-year-old with knowledge of a seventeen-year-old. The service pokemon gave an approving nod and retook his place at Jean's side as the trainer got to his feet.
Looking around at his two options, he debated what to do. Getting another team member before getting to base was probably a good idea, but so was training up Ancil and... his new friend that he would have to come up with a name for. After some thought, he decided that he could just as easily train his pokemon against wild ones as he could trainers, and possibly catch some in the process, and the wild fights would be faster than trainer battles. He wanted to be sure to get to Ectruteak before sun down after all. So with a deep breath to calm his nerves, he gave Ancil a nod and began his way south.

The Raticate would stare Ancil down for awhile longer, teeth gnashing, fur on ends, and hissing. The Screech did what it wanted, that is allow it to get free, however from what the rodent could tell it didn't harm the Absol's fighting spirit, not one bit. The Mouse Pokemon would slowly begin to walk backwards as it realized its foe wasn't backing down itself. With a final hiss the Raticate would turn around and flee into the tall grass, disappearing into the blades. Looks like it didn't feel confident anymore.
With the Raticate taken care of Jean and Ancil would be free to continue along the route, nothing else bothering them between where they were and Ecruteak City, the tall grass giving way to a dirt path and the city's gate appearing on the horizon. All he had to do was pass through said gate and he would be in the historical city itself.

Ecruteak City was a very old settlement, one of the last places in Johto to be brought into the modern era. If one wanted to get an idea of what the entire region looked like long ago they would only have to observe Ecruteak, with its historical buildings, traditional culture, and other monuments to an era long gone. Because of how the city clung to its past there remains many places and things of historical significance such as the Bell Tower, Ho-oh's fabled roost, and its destroyed sister tower and former roost of Lugia, the Burned Tower. The monks of the Bell Tower tend to both and adhere to the old ways. Besides the towers there is also the Dance Theater where a trope of woman practice the city's ancient art of dance.
Befitting of such an old and mystical city the local gym leader specializes in Ghost Pokemon, the man named Morty a master of the spiritual. Furthermore the gym leader possesses a deep well of knowledge concerning legendary Pokemon, particularly the legendary Ho-oh, the city's mystical protectors.
While there was plenty in Ecruteak City for Jean to see that was not what he was here for and not part of his current journey. Ecruteak was simply a stop along his way to Team Snagem's headquarters. The most he might do here is pay the Pokemon Center a visit, maybe get something to eat, buy some supplies for the trek ahead, and head on out.
"You should use your time in Ecruteak City wisely." GRAY spoke up to Jean as he walked the streets of Ecruteak. "The path ahead will take you through Route 42 and without a Pokemon to ferry you across the water you'll be forced to take the alternate route through the tunnels of Mt. Mortar. The tunnels are filled to the brim with wild Pokemon, especially Zubat, so some Repel might not be a bad idea as well as some medicine for your Pokemon as you'll be cut off from civilization inside. It also gets dark inside so you'll need a light source as well. GRAY advised Jean, this time saving the sass as if to get across how serious traveling through Mt. Mortar will be. "Unless of course you find a way across the water."

The resident Nurse Joy would give Jean a slight bow and take out from underneath the counter a small tray with six Pokeball sized indents in it, the tray meant to hold Pokeballs, clearly. She would place the counter on the table in a very practiced manner and slide it perfectly straight towards the end of the counter and Jean, her hands never leaving the hands on the sides of the tray. "Yes sir. Please place any Pokeballs containing the Pokemon to be healed on the tray."
If and when Jean placed the Pokeballs the nurse would bow again and turn around. She would walk up to a large machine behind the counter and place the tray in a slot the perfect size for it. After pressing a few buttons she would take a step back from the machine and watch it hum to life and light up, a cool energy washing over the Pokeballs for a second. When it was all done the machine would ding and Nurse Joy would step back up to it, pick up the tray, and return to the counter. Like before she would set the tray on the counter and slide it towards Jean with purpose. With the tray in front of him she would bow a third time.
"Thank you for waiting, your Pokemon are now fighting fit!" She informed Jean. Now with all that out of the way she would answer his question. "The PokeMart is located across the street behind the Pokemon Center, next door to the dance theater directly behind us. It's a building with a blue roof and tall illuminate sign, you can't miss it."

"Wonderful." Jean stated, giving her an akward bow back while taking his pokemon back as he wasn't quite accustom to it.
He quickly let Ancil back out, knowing he was probably getting antsy. The absol immediately shook itself off a bit and stretched with a sigh, thankful to be back out in the open where he can watch after his human. "Thank you greatly, madame." He said, before heading out and towards the PokeMart.
Once at the store, he took out his coin pouch and counted up to see how much he had on hand. He had been given five Snag Coins with his kit, though he didn't think that was viable here. He would have to rely on the PokeDollars he had left from before he signed up with Snagem. Seemed he had about five thousand left from the random odds and ends jobs he used to take according to his notes, not a lot but enough to get by for now. He grabbed five pokeballs, five repels, and two antidotes and placed them in the shopping basket he had grabbed from the front. He would need money left for an inn and food for the night. That would probably deplete the last of his savings, but hopefully after that night he wouldn't need it.
Approaching the counter, the Kalosian placed the basket down and nodded a n akward and nervous greeting to the cashier. "U-um... how much for these please, monsieur?"

The shop keep cocked an eyebrow at Jean and his jumpy response, what a strange fellow he was. The man however just brushed it off, sighing and chalking it up to Kalosians being strange people. "Kalos huh? Never met one of you before...interesting." He said dismissively. "Any who, an inn? Sure, I know of several but the one you want is on the north-eastern side of town, been there for hundreds of years, the Rainbow Roost. Just head outside and travel north and it's directly behind us near the pond. It's very traditional so I hope you don't mind sleeping on the floor. There is a more modern one on the other side of town but I heard it has a Spinarak infestation." The man answered Jean.
If and when Jean headed out he would find the Rainbow Roost easily enough. As explained the building looked very old, perhaps as old as the mythical Bell Tower. Its architecture reflected its age, a wooden 'minka' house, as they called them, the roof made up of wooden tile, a very characteristic look. The place didn't seem very busy on the outside so it shouldn't be hard to get a room.
"Hello and welcome honored guest!" A kimono clad one would greet Jean as soon as he walked in, the woman clearly stopping whatever she was doing as she put some towels down on a nearby table and deeply bowed to Jean. "Will you be honoring us staying with us, sir?" She asked, smiling brightly.
