Ok well first off: sorry if this is in the wrong area!
Anywho I wanted to have abit of a rant. Why is it that almost all fighting roleplay characters nowadays are the following: -demon/vampire/werewolf -spell casters -japanese -users of katanas
I mean where is the scale? Not everyone is going to be the greatest! Vampires and werewolves are supposed to be outcasts of a human world after all. Think about Dracula: the lonely vampire who rules over peasants from his house on the hill. Demons are even more reclusive as generally they're meant to be stuck in hell and only seen on the pages of dusty leather-bound books. I can see that a roleplay world should open up the imaginations of people, but it's also something that should be shared with other people. I'm not saying that restrictions should be applied on people but surely it's about time that people realised that it's getting tedious!
Discuss, argue and debate please!

They try so hard to be non streotypical, makeing a new streotype. They want to feel special. Me I like being a normal human. With out use of a sword at all. They are a weapon of self defense that is all. Lances, bows and guns are the greastest. Also I use the Dragoon threoy. I don't need no magic. I shall kill you by stabeing a lance into your chest, and if you are going to unleash a power ful move, I'm going to jump in the air and leave your as behind. Now and then I will be a spell sword though.

Before you offer me your first born duaghter, let me point out that I don't write a who lot fopr posts, there is no need to write a page for the action of wakeing up. I'm also very picky on who and where I rp with. They have to be seriouse to rp corectly, but loose enough to let spelling mistakes and such slide.

Firstly. Gaiko Thou Art Mine Sworn Enemy!
Secondly most of the characters that people think of as 'cool' are now steriotypes, whereas the more classical architypes are becoming more and more rare. In the video game industry ever since Cloud in FF7 there have been Cloud clones every where. Also vampires, gods, demons, and all sorts of things which used to be considered 'bad guys' are now commonly used as player characters. The Drow for instance now have 'rebelious youths who fight for the cause of good' If that dosn't scream out angsty teenage steriotype I do not know what does. It is now more unique to find a human who grew up on a farm and set out adventuring, than a vampire paladin who suffers from turrets, and has fallen in love with a demigod, and has a sword thats bigger than you are.
Oh yes, and about the huge sword bit. Frued would be proud.

Paragraph roleplay is incredibly tedious for action-orientated scenarios. I think it works for a slower pace though.

Now there are two problems with that: 1) It could get boring 2) The mojority of conversations on gaia are pointless rabbles that sound like someone who's stoned anyway.

Ugh. I agree full heartedly here. On another forum, in an action RP I actually made a rule:
NO KATANAS ALLOWED
I don't understand it. Why use a katana in a European setting, with a European character who has ACCESS TO GUNS. xp That's one thing I can't stand.
I try to be nice about the vampire/semi-god/bigass sword thing, and just tell them what they're doing wrong. In my earlier RP days...I used to do that. Looking back on it, I'm incredibly humiliated.

I think that essentially: the more experienced a roleplayer gets, the more they are willing to be different. You learn that after a while that a god-like character is boring, and doesn't give you much scope for interresting plots.

ninja THE MANTIS BUNNY OF D00M STRIKES AGAIN! domokun PH34R ME!
Okay, done with that. I agree about not allowing Katanas in a setting that is obviously not made for them. I also agree about the overabundance of demons and demon hybrids. Werewolves aren't meant to be good people. Lycanthropy is a disease that drives the affected person to insanity as he takes on this new form. O.o I know, I've read it in a book ninja
Godly character most definitely can get boring, but if you're lucky, you can find a group that you can use to set an RP where said godly character sets said group on an incredible adventure. Stuff like that can be plenty fun, and really takes things back to D&D style RP, especially if the godly character acts as the RPM (read: RolePlay Master), and sets up the obstacles for the adventures, making sure that said adventurers can actually deal with said obstacles ninja
Hmm... stare I seem to be going off on a tangent...well, anyways, weapons being used in an improper setting: bad. Overabundance of character with traits that shouldn't mix in the first place: bad. Godly characters: bad, unless you know how to manage them. Playin' to regular old human who gets caught up in something they never expected: good and fun if you can pull it off without accidentally killing said human or being forced to give them super abilities to deal with whatever comes up...I think that covers it all with what I have to say...so...yeah... ninja
domokun PH34R ME! domokun

True, which would make one of those so well done. What about the neighbors? Crazy sounds to go investigate? Places to find dealers? If one puts more thought into it, it can be even more interesting than werewolf half-vampire fox demons in a dark forest with a full moon.

I was in an RP that didn't get off the ground once, some idiot wanted to be an air pirate with a katana. He ******** up a Japanese name. He also claimed that he was the best swordsman ever, and though guns could kill him he was fast enough to dodge them. Those RPs get boring really fast because there are no flaws except perfection. I'm tired of the vampire thing, the demon thing's okay but it can be too much sometimes. I've never even done a vampire RP and I'm tired. It's much harder and requires more talent to play a regular person. It's bad RPing to make huge angst for a flaw, also a sign of weakness to need to add all sorts of cool things just to feel interesting and important. Not to advertise myself as a HP nut (WHICH I'M NOT scream ) but I'd love to see someone who's a muggle or a squib or a Neville in one of those rather than the perfect wizard/witch. Mary Sues and Gary Stus are annoying, sparkly-poos too. Pretty much they happen everywhere, fanfiction, RPs, even original novels and storylines. I'm not sure where I was going with this, but it's a rant.

About the no Katanas bit. I really don't mind if people have odd weapons, as long as they can explain them. However most people's explination of having a katana is "It's like in that one movie, with all the ninjas" So unless you have a good reason to have a weapon don't just take because all the sudden you like Asain weapons. Ninja sticks should be left to the professionals. (and b*****d swords are cooler.)
