Belief in the Paranormal: Does it make one foolish?

I don’t just speak of paranormal, but also religion. Both are considered un-provable by science, or have been actively disproved. But what does that mean for those who still believe?

Topic:

Does believing in something that can’t be proved make you irrational or ignorant? Does it mean a person is unable to understand evidence and logical arguments?

My Thoughts:

Some people do blindly follow the paranormal and can get taken by con artists. Religion has been used to justify atrocities. Both followers of religion and paranormal actively ignore (or a large majority do) all evidence that their beliefs are logically impossible.

I believe. I’m not into organized religion, and I don’t know the names of any of the ‘celebrity’ psychics. But I believe that there is ‘something’ out there and that people do have the ability to tap into something ‘unknown’.

I don’t ignore the evidence to the contrary. I’ve looked at it. I understand that neither of my ‘beliefs’ can be proven, but that they can be put into serious question (to the point where they have basically been disproved).

I decided to believe. It does not mean I’m incapable of logical thought or make me ignorant. It simply means I made a conscious decision knowing the facts to believe anyway. Does that make me a fool?

I'm a believer and skeptic all in one. The safe definition for myself would most likely be something along the lines of "pantheist agnostic," something religious people and atheists can hate openly.

Moving on, there are plenty of intelligent religious people/people who believe in the supernatural. Some of them are professors at University (psst, my Cultural Geography professor was Christian), others are respected writers or musicians or artists. Hell, there's scientists out there who believe strongly in the unknown. Some were said they feel closer to the almighty by understanding more about the world and ourselves. It's a primitive form of thought to say a believer is (x) whereas a nonbeliever is (y). Someone once said that faith and reason are two sides that will never reach a compromise, and I believe that.

Just so long as you know when you're being gypped by someone who presents you with scraps of The Shroud of Turin or "video evidence" of ghosts. You need to be a skeptic in order to believe, if that makes any sense.

There's a book you should read (and I as well) called Conversations With God. A friend recommended it to me, and it was very intelligently done apparently. The writer claims that these are straight from the god's mouth and not fiction, but regardless of whether you believe it or not it sounds like a good read. It's a book that preaches tolerance and freedom, and to be good even to people with no patience or tolerance for you.

I believe it's possible that the paranormal exist. Show me evidence, and you've got me interested.

However, as far as religion goes... I don't even believe what the bible says, really. Well, about Jesus, yes. But not Adam and Eve starting humanity... that's just insane.

I truly do believe in the paranormal. The thing that bothers me most though, is when you get those complete idiots thinking they can feel their spirits when they can't, and taken pictures of dust convinced they're spirits. They put a bad name on those who believe.

The thing that's so hard about it is that you can't put some real scientific evidence into something that's so hard to catch, whether it be on film, in pictures, or voice.

Religion, however, is much harder for me to believe. I'm a very spiritual person but I just don't feel praying is worth much since I know I can achieve what I want without asking something no one can be sure exists. It's just one of those things you really have to feel in your soul. Whether religion exists I will never believe the bible. How are you supposed to trust something that's been rewritten and edited for centuries? I just see it as one of those stories you hear and once it's been passed around enough it's so fabricated that you will never really know what the real story was in the first place.

So between the two, I totally believe in the paranormal. Woot! ^_^

it certainly doesn't make you a fool or stupid. infact, i think not beliveing anything is foolish and stupid- i mean if you don't know what you belive in, that's fine, but thinking there is nothing 'after life' or something, i mean why whould you think that? you might as well belive in something, it doesn't hurt anyways.

I believe that there is an explaination for everything. That doesn't mean I don't believe in the possiblity of the paranormal. There may be an explaination for everything, but that doesn't mean everybody's going to like it.

Yes it does make you silly and gullible. There is a scientific explentaion for everything be it abnormal electrical activity or something else

I think that like in all there has to be balance. Yes, you should question things, but do it in order to get to a mora plausible explanation. Not that put aside the paranormal, far from that. You got to keep an open mind, but with an healthy skepticism. "The supernatural is the natural not yet understood." by Elbert Hubbard.

I sorta believe in zee paranormal... just depends on the case...

There's alot of fakes out there, and each case is different.... There needs to be proof such as a picture that doesn't look like someone got a random reflection of something in there

I kinda believe in ghosts since that spatula doesn't fly off the wall by it's self and breadpans don't either. If no one is around them and their isn't enough vibration to knock them off and makes you wonder. I don't like to believe in it but I do, which is a reason why I watch taps. They don't go out there to prove it they go out there to debunk it, or in other words prove that it's "Just an old wives' tale"
