I'm making a list of the manga I want to purchase and then this hit me...
What's the difference between Fushigi Yugi and Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden?
And anyone else have any suggestions?
BTW, I'll move this later.

The original was on the lines of a romantic comedy while the other is more serious.

Hi, I read a lot of manga and I have read fushigi Yugi but I've never heard of the other one.... Its probably a series sequel or prequel or something...

I recomend Ayashi no Ceres (Also Called Ceres the Celestial jerney in the translation)
It is made by the same person who made Fushigi Yugi

No suggestions, though.. unless you haven't already got X/1999 or aren't already collecting xxxHolic.. XD For a short collection, go for Sister Red. I've got both the Volumes it spans over, and its quite an interesting story..

Fushigi Yūgi (ふしぎ 遊戯) was the first manga of this story written by Yuu Watase in 1992.
In the story, two teenage girls find a book in the restricted section of the National Library, entitled The Universe of the Four Gods. When they open the book and read the first page they are transported within the story, which is set in a world similar to feudal China.
After in 2003 he start to written Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden (ふしぎ遊戲玄武開伝) that tells the history of the creation of "The Universe of the Four Gods" and the story of the Genbu no Miko, or Priestess of Genbu, who is mentioned in the first Fushigi Yūgi.
This manga is still on-going, new chapters are published quarterly in the Fushigi Yūgi Perfect World magazine and new volumes of the manga come out in Japan bi-annually.
