3nodding Damm... i need help on Scientific Notation... For 7th grade pre-algebra... I forgot how to do scientific notation right after STATE tests =( Can someone plz tell me how to work em? exclaim mrgreen neutral 3nodding

Scientific notation is when you have a number that is 1 or greater than 1 and less than 10 times 10 to the power of something. Lucky you, I'm doing scientific notations right now (I'm in 7th grade too).

isn't it like when:

write 70000 in terms of scientific notation:
7x10^4

or

write .007 in terms of scientific notation:
7x10^(-3)

Hanami10 is, correct, also remember that there can never be more than one number, to the left of the decimal point, for example.

160000 is 1.6 x 10^5 not 16 x 10^4

well...I'm going to be a freshman in geometry once school starts, but what I learned was this:

If the question is telling you to write the following in scientific notation; 1800000000

Then you move the decimal (which is at the end of the number) to right in between the 1 and the 8, like so: 1.800000000 (of course, the zeros don't need to be visible anymore)

Finally, hopefully it's multiple choice, pick the answer that has the power number equal to the number of decimal places you moved, like so: 1.8x10 ^9

I've always struggled with scientific notation, but that makes it a little bit easier.

My maths teacher is always too busy showing the class how pro he is at maths to teach us anything rofl

Also if theres more then 2 numbers(ex: 194860000000000) then you would put 1.9486 and count all the places in between the numbers (ex: 1.9.4.8.6.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.)there are 15 .'s so its would be 1.9486 x 10^15 get it? this is kinda sad cause im in 6th grade so...

Just wait till you reach the grade when they start teaching you the quadratic formula. That is friggin confusing, unless you kinda like math (that is, if you can even stand not skipping the class).

Now say that you have a problem that has you convert from the simplified number into the real number like:
0.000456 x 10^-7

The above problem would be equal to 4560. Don't forget this, kid ninja
