Anger, pain, and loathing flickered in Jules’ purple eyes.
“James Constantine is my blood parent, but other than that we have no relationship,” she spoke quietly, her voice harsh.
An uncomfortable static filled the room, so thick it was hard to breathe.
The spell suddenly shattered when Phoenix cleared his throat.
“Jules and I are going to get something to eat. Come on, Jules,” he said as he grabbed her hand and led her to the lunch line.
“Sorry about that,” he said with an apologetic smile, “Maggie’s a freshie. She hasn’t learned how to keep her mouth shut yet.”
“It’s okay,” Jules replied, “I’m used to it.”
They reached the back of the line and Jules cleared her throat.
“Um, Phoenix, you’re still holding my hand,” she said quietly.
Phoenix shrugged as he shoved his free hand into the pocket of his pants.
“Yeah? What’s wrong with that? We used to hold hands all the time as kids. What’s the matter, Jules? You don’t want to hold my hand anymore?” he teased.
Jules turned bright red.
“N-no,” she stammered, “Th-that’s not what I said! I-I…wh-what I meant was…”
Phoenix chuckled.
“I forgot how cute you look when you blush,” he smiled, pulling his hand out of his pocket to gently brush is fingers against Jules’ cheek, pushing away a stray brown bang.
Jules stared at Phoenix wide-eyed. For a moment she forgot how to breathe.
“Line’s moved up,” Phoenix said, breaking the spell as he moved up, releasing her hand.
Jules shook her head to clear it and followed Phoenix.
