Chapter Ten
When I woke up, I had a splitting headache, my ears were filled with air, and it felt like I was going to throw up. I looked out the window, and only saw clear blue sky, and fluffy white clouds. I smiled to myself. So this was what it was like up here. I rubbed my eyes to get the sleep out of them, turn my head and winced. My neck was sore. Mental note: don’t sleep with your head sideways, you’ll have killer pain when you wake up. I looked around. Zack and Wild Talon were awake talking silently to themselves, Zoey was asleep on the rather huge white leather couch across from me, and Jay…where was Jay? I sat up straight, and looked around. He wasn’t anywhere. I got up, and flapped my wings. They hurt. Probably slept on them wrong, this time. I walked, well, rather stumbled over to Zack and Wild Talon, who looked up when I approached. Zack smiled.
“Good afternoon sleepy head.” Wild Talon flapped her black wing in greeting. I nodded in return.
“What time is it?”
“Just about 4:30, two more hours before we land.” Wild Talon replied happily. I smiled, and sat down in an extra chair in between them.
“Are you good friends with Jenn?” I asked. Wild Talon shrugged.
“We’re not close or anything, but we get along fairly well.” she smiled. “Why?”
“Just curious. You seemed all happy to see her.”
“Jenn tells Wild Talon things about her past.” Zack put in. I looked at him confused.
“Wild Talon doesn’t remember anything about her childhood.” I looked at the brown haired girl sitting beside me. She was staring out the window again. I looked back at Zack, who was sitting back, with his eyes closed. I was still confused.
“Why doesn’t she remember anything?”
“We don’t know.”
“Does Jenn know?”
“No. Wild Talon tried asking her, but Jenn doesn’t remember anything either.” I thought for a moment.
“Were Jenn and Wild Talon friends before? Why does Jenn know so much about her past?” Zack smiled.
“Jenn has a thing for spying on people.”
“Spying?” I asked, surprised by his choice of words. He nodded slowly.
“Jenns parent s seem to always kick her out of her house, so to pass the time, Jenn finds other people, and try to understand how they live. Wild Talon just happened to be one of those people.” I laughed lightly.
“Her parents kick her out of the house?”
“Jenns parents aren’t what you call, great parents. They always drink, and do bad stuff, and for no reason, Jenn says, they kick her out, for days, weeks, even months at a time.” “Where does she stay then if her parents wont let her come home?” I asked, concerned. Zack shrugs.
“She built herself a tree house.”
“A tree house?”
“Yeah, she has to have somewhere to stay, doesn’t she?” Zack opened his eyes, and leaned forward a little with ease. “She doesn’t have any money or anything, so she can’t stay anywhere, and she has no relatives that are close by.”
“Oh, I see.” I said sympathetically. “God, that must suck. How old is Jenn anyways?”
“She’s turning 16 in a couple of months.” I sighed, and sat back in my chair.
“Am I youngest one here?”
“No, Wild talon just turned 14 last week.” I smiled, glad that I wasn’t the youngest. “I’m the same age as Jay, 16, and Zoey is 15.”
“So basically, me and Zoey are the middle aged ones here?” Zack laughed.
“Yeah, pretty much.”
“What are you guys laughing about?” Zoey asked in a groggily voice. I looked over my shoulder, and almost burst out laughing. Zoeys light orange hair was all over the place. I’m afraid its worse then mine.
“Oh nothing, Zoey, just a little something Angel said.” Zack smiled at me, then looked back at Zoey, patting a part of his seat. “Care to join us?”
“I can try, though I’m not sure if my back will allow me to move…ow!” Zoey yelped in pain as she stood up. Her hand went immediately to her back. I frowned in worry.
“Does your back always hurt, Zoey?” I asked as she hobbled over to Zack, and sat down awkwardly. She sighed, and rested her head on Zacks shoulder.
“Most of the time. I hurt it badly when I was climbing a tree and I fell.”
“Ouch, I’m sorry.” Zoey waved off my apology.
“No worries, it was a while ago, but it still hurts like a..” she trailed off as she looked around. “Where’s Jay?”
“Yeah, where is he?” Wild Talon asked. I looked over at her. She finally was out of her daze, and was looking at us with confusion. I shrugged to all of them, and looked around.
“I don’t know. When I woke up he wasn’t anywhere that I could see.” Zoey and Zack looked at each other concerned. I looked at them questionably, and with worry.
“What?” I asked. Zoey was about to say something when the door to the pilots cabin opened and closed. I turned around swiftly, and there was Jay. I stared at him. Where was he?
“Sorry, I was just having a word with the captain. He said we will be landing in twenty.” he said, smiling innocently. I looked back at Zack and Zoey. Zoey was glaring at him like usual, and Zack was just staring at him. He pulled up a chair beside me, and sat down. I looked at him for a moment longer, then stared out the window.
“Have a good sleep?” Jay asked he quietly. I jumped a little. His voice was very close to my ear. I wasn’t expecting it.
“Um, yeah, except for the fact I slept on my neck wrong.” I shrugged. Jay chuckled.
“No dreams?” I shook my head.
“Nope.” I looked up at him. His face seemed a little disappointed at first, but then turned calm again. And they thought us girls had major mood swings. I smiled awkwardly at him, then turned my head away. I wondered about my mom and dad, and how they were taking my disappearance. They were probably either freaking out, and calling the police, or they were just sitting at home, doing ordinary things, and not caring if I was missing. They were probably not caring, but that’s just me. I also wondered what happened to Wild Talon, and how she lost all her memories of her childhood. Maybe she had a head injury, and it recovered badly, or she just one day chose not to remember anything, and then one by one, all her memories were erased. Anyone’s guess is as good as mine. I looked down at my clothes. They seemed old, and wrinkled now. I grimaced. What was I going to do about clothes?
“Don’t worry, Zoey has that all taken care of.” Jay whispered in my ear. I through my hands up in utter annoyance.
“Ugh, will you stop going in my mind and reading every little thought that comes into my head! You know I have a personal space bubble, and you just popped it!” I yelled. Everyone looked at me, startled. Jay just smiled happily.
“See, I’m not the only one who hates it.” Zoey scowled. I got up from my seat, and moved as far away as possible from Jay. I walked over to the far corner, and sat down in a round orange bean bag chair that was conveniently away from all other seating. I crossed my arms and legs, and looked outside once more. Why couldn’t he just leave me alone? If there is a law against mind reading or what ever, he should follow it. I now know how it can get annoying. I had my own mind, and my thoughts are supposed to be just thoughts, not conversations. The whole point in thoughts is for them to be silent, and unknown to others around you, not the other way around.
“Angel, may I sit with you?” Zoey asked suddenly. I looked up. Her blue eyes were pleading. I nodded once, and moved over on the bean bag chair so she could sit down too.
“Apparently if you’re farther away from a Thought Lifter, its harder for them to hear you.” she whispered as she sat down slowly. I looked at her, dumbfounded.
“ Thought Lifter?” I asked. Zoey nodded.
“That’s what mind readers are called.”
“So there’s Twins, Thought Lifters…” I listed the two names I knew. “Is there anything else?”
“The only other one I know of are Half Breeds.”
“Half Breeds…”I trailed off. “What are those?”
“One person of two kinds.” Zoey said simply. I thought about it. One person of two kinds. Was there more than one kind of “winged people.” I had no idea what people with wings were called. I only knew of the Naturelles, but no one seems to have explained what that is yet. I sighed.
“Too much to take in on your second day outside?” Zoey smirked playfully. I smiled, grateful for her supportive nature. Another thought and question came to mind.
“So are the gifted ones Half Breeds then?” I asked. Zoey nodded. I looked over at Jay, who was quietly staring at nothing. Probably trying to hear my thoughts, and probably Zoeys too.
“Does that mean Jay is a Half Breed then?” I asked.
“Seat belts on, we are descending in 2 minutes.” the pilot came on the radio. I sighed, and found a near by seat belt. There are in the most convenient places. I’m thankful for Zoeys parents intelligence. I heard Wild Talon laugh in excitement.
“How long has Wild Talon been away from her past?” I asked.
“Since she was 4.”
“What about her parents?” I asked.
“Dead.”
