Hope
His thoughts drifted to times of when he was young. Thoughts to the girl he was returning to. A young beauty who had fallen for him years back. Whom, he admittedly, had strong feelings for. He slowly fell into memories of days spent with her; when she loved him and he was afraid to admit to her afraid of bieng hurt.

It was his strong headed ways, and his need to see the world that had driven them to the fateful day. The day they had bid each other farewell. When she wished him a happy life, stating simply that she would wait for him.

Seven years had passed since then. When he had come across a letter she had written ages ago covered in dust in his office. She had filled his head since then, so now he was returning home. To see if she was still waiting, and if she was, to tell her what he should have said seven years back.

He drove into the small town that he had worked so hard to escape so long ago. He drove on through straight to the old field where they had said thier goodbyes. He parked then trudged up the hill to the familiar willow tree. Laying under it he succumbed to sleep.

The sun was setting; letting the brilliant shades purple, pink, orange and yellow fade out when he finally woke. He sat up and saw a darkened sillouet of a woman picking a wildflower. As if in a trance the man walked up to her.

He recognised the beautiful golden hair that came down in waves on her back. She wore a knee length powder blue sundress that billowed in the breeze. She stood up stretching out her long, perfect, pale legs. She had always been pale as a sheet no matter how much sun she got.

He called out her name, "Hope? Is it really you? It's me, Jonathon".She gracefully turned and looked up at him. He immediately recognised her face, made even more beautiful over the years.

Her pale, heart shaped face, her lightly blushing cheeks, the perfectly shaped pink lips. Her gentle features, though, could never match the eyes he loved so much. They were almond shaped and were deep saphires set behind long thick lashes. They were gleaming as a single tear streaked down her cheek. She barely moved her lips as she whispered, "You came".

The sheer feeling of love spread through him. He smiled then spoke softly, "Dear Hope, I was wrong to leave you. I know now that I love you". Tears flowed freely now down her face. She spoke with a beautifully musical voice tinged with sadness.

"I waited six full years, turning down all those who pursued me. When my father, who wanted me to move on, told me you had died in a car crash. I was grief stricken and could not imagine a world in which you did not exist. I wanted to join you, but you were not there. So I waited and waited and you finally came".

By now the stars were twinkling and the full moon kept her features lit. He shook his head as tears swam in his eyes, he blinked them back. He reached out for her hands to see for himself, but he could not touch her. He got chills as his hands passed through her.

She gave a light sob then brought her arms foreward in the light. His eyes settled on the scarlet carve marks on her small wrists. She stated sadly, "I do not have long before I must leave. When the sun rises I will disappear."

He swallowed hard "no please", he whispered desperately. "I have no choice, my waiting is done, you came back for me. Now when you left me, it was to see the world. Please tell me about it", she said softly.

They retired under the willow tree laying side by side, close, but not touching. As fantastic descriptions spilled from his lips. He went on untill he fell to dreams of her smiling face lit by the bright sun.

When Jonathon awoke the next morning his heart felt heavy and his body cold and numb. As he sat up he noticed a single saphire blue rose with a golden ribbon tied around the stem. He gently kissed the dainty petals then buried it under the willow tree. He whispered softly into the dew soaked, chill morning, "Let your waiting end and rest peacefully my beloved Hope."
