in the throne room, "they said the princess had refused to let anyone come into the room." i herd some of our maids say. ''You can't come in,'' she said. ''You mustn't get what I have.'' I went up to her and found her in exactly the position I had left her , white-faced, but with the tops of her cheeks flushed by the fever, staring still, as she had stared, at the foot of the bed. seto took her temperature. ''What is it' ''Something like a hundred,'' he said. It was one hundred and two and four tenths. '' It was a hundred and two,'' she said. '' Who said so?'' mahado asked. ''The doctor.'' ''Your temperature is all right,'' I said. 'It's nothing to worry about.'' mahado said. ''I don't worry, '' she said, ''but I can't keep from thinking.'' ''Don't think,'' I said. ''Just take it easy.'' seto said. '''I'm taking it easy,'' she said and looked straight ahead. she was evidently holding tight onto herself about something. ''Do you think it will do any good?'' ''Of course it will.'' I sat down on her bed , about to say something, but, ''About what time do you think I'm going to die?'' she asked. my heart stopped. ''What?'' i asked. she looked me in the eyes. ''About how long, will it be, before I die?'' she repeated. ''You aren't going to die.'' mahado said. '' What's the matter with you?!'' seto said. " dont yell at her." i told seto. "I heard her say a hundred and two.'' ''People don't die with a fever of one hundred and two, atenra. That's a silly way to talk.'' i said " the boys in mahado's class told me you can't live with forty-four . I've got a hundred and two.'' she said. "im sorry my pharaoh, i'll get on them about that." mahado said. "its alright mahado, boys will be boys." them i motioned them to come with me out side her door. " she had been waiting to die all day, ever since ra came up this morning.'' " poor atenra.'" I said. "what should we do,tell her," asked seto. "of course, we cant let her sit there and think she will die in a couple days."mahado told him. "i will tell her, since i got mad at her." seto said. " ok." he walked in to the room. ''atenra,You aren't going to die. what the boys said are lies." ''Are you sure?'' ''Absolutely," seto said. "It's like riding a horse and walking to the Nile. You know, how long it takes." seto told her "Oh" she said. But her gaze at the foot of her bed relaxed slowly. The hold over herself relaxed too, finally, and the next day it was very slack and she cried very easily at little things that were of no importance.
