1. What did you do in 2018 that you'd never done before? Saw a fertility specialist about my difficulties with getting pregnant, got treatment, and then go...so far...17 weeks pregnant.
2. Did you keep your New Years' Resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Some. Taina still doesn't have his restricted license. I did well at making more time to relax by myself though.
3 . Did anyone close to you give birth? Sy and Carol had their second baby (Sy is Taina's younger brother), so I have a new nephew Riley.
4. Did anyone close to you die? Not really. Taina's grandmother died at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't say she was close to me though, I'd only met her once or twice.
5. What countries did you visit? Just stayed in New Zealand this year. I'd done plenty of travelling last year, plus I'd been hoping all year to get pregnant (and then finally did) so I didn't want to make any major plans to fly anywhere just in case.
6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018? I'd like for things to get a bit more settled money-wise, and to be less depressed about work. How we get there I don't know. Ideally Taina gets a good job that is enough to support both of us and then I can just focus on the baby once it's born. Or maybe he gets a job, but doesn't earn enough to cover costs so maybe I get a part-time job a few months after baby is born? Or maybe worst case scenario none of these things work out and we try to scrape by on benefit money and gifts from Dad?
...I don't know. I am just so completely mentally done with my job and I desperately want to leave. So all that I want now is a way to make ends meet without me having to work there.
7. What date from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Probably the day me and Taina were at our appointment with the Fertility Specialist, and found out we're pregnant. Also the day we moved from Mana Esplanade to Warspite Avenue. It's always a huge job, moving. Dad and Jill's wedding was also a fun time.
8.What was your biggest achievement of the year? Getting pregnant, and getting this far along in the pregnancy.
9. What was your biggest failure? Well, work just went from one bad thing to the next. I had a lot of illnesses, bad flus and colds, and Katy didn't deal with that well. Having to go back and forward to work during the week I was scheduled for jury service was stressful. And now, I have lost my Supervisor position, and keep having regular meetings with Katy, who has no sympathy for my pregnancy symptoms and seems to be looking for a way to get rid of me.
I mean sure, I do want to leave. I just don't want to get pushed out in the wrong way, and be stuck with this negative-looking outcome on my job history.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? One or two severe flus. A few colds. One cold then caused me to get vertigo which was pretty intense. I had a lot of migraines, especially once I got pregnant. Then there's the other pregnancy symptoms I've had so far, nausea, exhaustion, leg cramps, trouble sleeping, getting dizzy and light-headed on hot days, stuff like that.
11. What was the best thing you bought? Wow, this is a toughie this year. What did I buy? I didn't have much money for anything so I don't know if I did buy anything. Oh, I bought a pregnancy journal book. And a 2019 diary for keeping track of things. I guess those were my favourite things.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration? Mark has been calm and helpful at work, which is fortunate, because Katy has been really difficult to work with. I also enjoyed working with Cameron, because he's friendly and we have plenty to chat about. The fertility specialist, and the GP that referred me to him. Thank goodness for their help.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Katy- particularly the day I was struggling a lot with pregnancy nausea, and she told me to either "have a glass of water and get over it, or go home, because I won't pay you to be here and not working". As though I could just instantly stop needing to throw up by having a glass of water? Jeez.
14. Where did most of your money go? The appointments with the fertility specialist cost an arm and a leg. Travel costs for work are always high, and then there's bills, plus rent got a lot higher once we moved into our current place.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? The Bleachers concert at the beginning of the year. That was really fun. Plus just spending the few days in Auckland was nice.
16. What song will always remind you of 2018? Dancing on Glass- St Lucia. And most Wild Cub songs.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you: i. Happier or Sadder? Happier because I am looking forward to having my baby. ii. Thinner or Fatter than last year? Fatter, although to be fair some of that can be attributed to pregnancy weight. iii. Richer or Poorer? Poorer. Living expenses are higher, and my pay has stayed the same, so I just can't make ends meet easily anymore.
18: What do you wish you'd done more of? Exercising, and doing things to take my mind off work.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Working. If only that had been possible.
20. How will you be spending Christmas? I spent it at Dad and Jill's place. Me and Taina stayed over Christmas Eve night like usual, did the normal morning thing with playing Christmas music, opening presents, a nice breakfast. The Pilchers came over for lunch, Janine was absent for the second year in a row, but we found out she just had a miscarriage so she wasn't feeling great.
The main difference from previous Christmases is we had no big Kelly family get-together in the evening. The evening was just me, Taina, Dad, Jill, Jill's daughter Brierlee and her partner Steve and we played games on the PS4.
22. Did you fall in love in 2018? I love my husband, so I'm all set.
23. How many one-night stands? Well, like I said, I love my husband, so I'm all set.
24. What was your favourite TV programme? The Good Place is so brilliant. I need to re-watch it. Also Crazy Ex-Girlfriend took a real serious turn in that last season, but I liked it. I re-watched Gilmore Girls, because hey, why not? And I'm not normally a fan of reality shows, but I enjoyed watching some cooking shows this year, like Nailed It.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? I don't really do hating people much.
26. What was the best book you read? Once again I didn't get around to reading anything new. But I re-read the whole Animorphs series from start to finish. It was worth it.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Wild Cub and St Lucia were the two bands I got really into. Also the 2017 Misterwives album is really decent.
28. What did you want and get? I got a new microwave from Dad for Christmas. The old one was second hand, Nick gave it to me when me and Taina first moved in together because he didn't need it anymore, but now it's rusted at the top and flaky. The new one is bigger and flasher so I like it. Also, I got the game Ticket to Ride for my birthday from Nick. That's really good. Oh, and most importantly, I got pregnant. Yay.
29. What did you want and not get? Enough money to pay off debts, and have some savings, and other things like that.
30. What was your favorite film of the year? Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was exciting to see. Oh, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Of course any movie about Queen has to be a good movie.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 33. Me and Taina went to see Bohemian Rhapsody. We went out for dinner to Mexico with Dad, Jill and Nick (who came over briefly for a visit from London). I enjoyed drinking the mocktails.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more enjoyable? Having a better job, and having more money.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2018? Wear trackpants all the time when possible, that way I don't have to shave my legs. Lol.
34. What kept you sane? Netflix. Animorphs. Taina. My fertility specialist.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I can't think of anyone particularly.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? Occasionally Trump would say or do things that annoyed me. I took a bit of an interest in the story over here where a young British tourist got murdered- it wasn't a political issue as such but I appreciated how Jacinda Ardern made a public statement to show her sympathy.
37. Who did you miss? Mum. Sometimes other old friends who I'm not in contact with anymore.
38. Who was the best new person you met? I didn't meet many new people. One or two new part-time staff started at work. They seem nice.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018? That usually the things I most want in life will happen....they just like to take their sweet time in coming along.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "We've been chasing this, all of your years, far beyond all our blood, sweat and tears"- Chasing This by Misterwives
