‘Till Death Do Us Part
Part 1
tab The faint white light was shining down from the bulb in the middle of the bathroom ceiling. Its soft glow seemed to travel to all the nooks and crannies of the pale white room. On the edge of the tub sat a young woman. She had on nothing more than a pair of shorts and a tank top, the same clothes that she had worn to bed the night before. Her short brown hair was still somewhat matted from rolling around all night in the bed last night. Tears streamed slowly down her face, parts of her hair sticking to where the tear trails were whenever the strands got close enough. She kept using her left hand to push her hair back behind her ear each time it fell down while holding a small bottle of pain medication in her right one.
tab She found the bottle in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom when she’d entered that morning. It was a pretty small bottle and only had about fifty pills but, even if some of them had been used, there should have been enough for what she wanted it for. She continued sniffling softly, spending a few seconds opening the bottle, the soft clicking of the bottle cap echoing through the bathroom. She finally removed the cap, dropping it the floor, and tipped the bottle into her hand. She looked at the eight small white pills that fell into her hand, closing her eyes as she bit her lip. She paused for a few minutes, thinking about what she was planning to do and why she was. She clenched the bottle tighter and quickly brought her left hand up to her mouth, putting all eight pills in. She tried to swallow them but quickly started gagging and ended up coughing. Within a matter of seconds, she had coughed all of the pills out and onto the floor.
tab She looked down at them, continuing to dissolve on the floor. She quickly whipped some of her tears away then tried again, pouring more pills into her hand, but this time trying to take them one by one. After she coughed up the fifth pill, she screamed, throwing the pills and the bottle. The pills flew around the room but the bottle slammed into the items that were propped up on the sink, sending everything crashing to the floor. She whipped her eyes again, looking at the mess that she’d just caused, and spotted the utensil she’d attempt to use next. She stood up, walking over to a razor that was now lying on the floor. She pulled out the blade and went back to the tub, sitting on the edge of it once more.
tab She held the small blade, pressing it tightly between her forefinger and thumb, inhaling deeply as she prepared to try again. She closed her eyes, biting her lip again, harder this time. She kept her eyes closed tightly as she slowly brought the razor to her arm, pressing down across her veins. She could feel it pressing into her skin, the pressure of it, the cool metal, but she couldn’t feel any blood. She opened her eyes and, to her frustration, saw no sign of injury to herself. She began crying more now, slouching downwards while still sitting on the edge of the tub. After a few seconds she threw the razor across the room, slamming the bathroom door open as she stormed out into the living room. She needed something long, durable. A rope, a sheet, a cord, anything that she could use to try and hang herself. The she found it.
tab She found an extension chord plugged into the wall beside the couch. Perfect place seeing as that’s where the pole was that she was going to try and hang herself from. She unplugged it and tied one end to the pole that extended from the wall. She stood up on the arm of the couch, making sure that it would be just short enough to strangle her once she jumped off. She slowly climbed up onto the arm, tying the other end securely around her neck, then tugging on it to make sure it was tight. She closed her eyes once again, just like her other attempts. After a short inhale and exhale, she kicked herself off the arm of the couch. She fell, and she was sure that she could feel it tightening but, before it could even tighten enough around her neck, the cord snapped and she fell to the ground.
tab She tumbled onto the floor into a slump, crying even more. She was refusing to move, not because of pain, but because of her inability to do what she wanted. She slowly brought her hands up to her face, covering it, still crying, her face soaked with tears by this point. She wanted to do it. She wanted to be able to finish it. But she couldn’t. She kept getting stopped. Things kept going wrong. She heard a cooing outside and she slowly looked up. There, on the balcony was a pigeon, perched on the bars. She slowly pulled herself up, removing the chord from around her neck, and went over to the window. She opened it up and, once she did, the pigeon noticed her and flew off. She watched it as it slowly flew off through the nearby apartment buildings, slowly getting smaller as it went off into the distance. She was just about to go back inside and try another idea when she looked down. Below her, ten stories down, was the rushing of cars, typical traffic for the city. She then looked up, peering towards the roof that extended at least another ten floors. This was it.
tab She rushed out of the apartment, the door slamming behind her as she rushed to the elevator. She pushed the button and looked up at the light saying where it was. It was on the first floor, lurching up. After five minutes of waiting, she couldn’t take it anymore. She ran to the stairs, pushing open the door, already up two flights when it finally closed back. Within a matter of minutes, she was one the roof of the apartment building. The sun was still rising into the sky, the air moving softly around her, her hair blowing in the wind. She slowly stepped towards the edge of the roof, inching closer. She peaked over the edge, looking down, the cars looking like nothing more than ants at this point. She took in a deep breath, slightly frightened by the sheer height that she was planning to drop from. No matter though. This would succeed. It had to succeed. There’s no way that it couldn’t have.
