Vahn (Modern Age) Vahn's abilities and relationships have changed slightly over time. The author has used the process of retroactive continuity, or ret-con, to adjust to changes in popular culture, eliminate restrictive segments of the mythos, and permit contemporary story lines. These changes, while significant, permit the retention of the core elements that make Vahn an iconic character.
THE BASICS Character Name: Vahn Fah Aliases: Kasuga, Devil, TGV, Fire-Bringer Race: Elemental (Formerly Human) Nationality: None (Formerly Murmillion) Alignment: True Neutral Occupation: Wanderer Gender: Male Age: Appears in his Late-Thirties (Is actually over a 100 years old) Place of Birth: Allen Fah (now known as Barthavos) Marital Status: Married Family: Eidolon Lysager (adopted father, deceased), Draeger Fah (father, deceased), Victor Fah (brother, whereabouts unknown) Lilim Fah (mother, deceased) Ashe (former wife, deceased), Sierra (wife) Current Residence: Unknown Affiliation: Vagabond Guild/Brotherhood: A member of the Leviathan Stadium in good standing, and a known member of the Heaven or Hell Team- Glacier. ATTRIBUTES Hardiness:
Drive of Humanity Through countless battles, and years of fighting, Vahn has come to terms with the fact that he often has to do what he has to do because he feels its for the greater good. Because of this Heroic Conviction, his will to live is abnormally strong and this allows for battle even with grave wounds. He will survive as long as a decisively fatal injury isn't taken, making it very hard to put him down when he truly believes in what he is fighting for.
"Vahn's response was so solid, so determined, something cannot be conveyed in the words themselves but in the way they are said, the ferver, the burning passion. The roaring determination." -Walter, Guldor
Art of the Kyonuske Training in Guldor, as adopted heir to the Kyonuske Clan during his younger years, has taught Vahn how to use his body as a weapon in of itself. Through this esoteric ninja training, he has become both acrobatic and agile to a degree, allowing for balance on unsteady surfaces and the like. His agility and grip were further strengthened through climbing exercises making Vahn athletic enough to perform at a near gymnastic level. This allows for the user to be able to accomplish feats such as running along walls to a degree, or jumping down two stories unharmed. He is also capable of escaping from bonds, and moving silently to a degree as well as having the mobility needed for dodging and tumbling.
He is basically able to perform stupendous, but still humanly possible feats.
Drakkar Knighthood Through his training as a Drakkar, Vahn is skilled with the use of a Drakkar's preferred weapon: the zweihander. These immense two-handed weapons were used by every Drakkar, and as part of his royal upbringing Vahn's training with them was nothing short of but to be expected. He has rudimentary knowledge on other melee weapons, but exclusively prefers two-handers when needing to carry a weapon. He is effective in utilizing the entire weapon, from hilt to tip, as well as able to parry with the flat and utilize the half-sword technique.
He excels in one-on-one combat, having gained improved alertness which lets him "feel and act" upon what is the most appropriate movement during a battle.
Abnormal Toughness Because he is not actually a being of flesh and bone, Vahn's bodily tissues are substantially more durable and resistant to impact or trauma than an ordinary human, although he is certainly not invulnerable. Because of this, his skin does not permit blunt physical blows to effect him; however particularly powerful attacks from formidable opponents may injure him and cause him to bleed out the flames that make up his true composition.
"- But well, this explains something concerning your general condition and constitution." Lucind, West Fall City
Pure Violence While being primarily a mixture of fighting styles, Vahn's own custom-built style of combat features quick, successive, ferocious attacks that evoke the uncompromising danger of fire, best suited for a practitioner with high quality agility, flexibility, speed and endurance. His style of brawling has few defensive moves aside from blocking and dodging-- but the high offensive yield which translates through both his body movements, sword style and flame attacks is more than worth it.
Subtlety: Environmental Awareness Due to his ability to discern heat patterns within his surroundings (even when in human guise), he gains what most people would call the "I feel like someone's looking over my shoulder" effect. Basically, when someone gets close enough, he'll always get that odd feeling down his spine right as they come within a reasonable distance (say about 10' or so). This also pertains to distance attacks. If you are being shot at with some sort of distance attack, you'll know a few second (or less or more depending on the speed of the projectile) before it makes contact with you, giving enough time for a quick reaction but nothing more. Arcana: Blood of Fire Although he by no means has a human body, Vahn can still replicate his old ability, in a fashion. Still dependent on the presence of oxygen, after sustaining an injury- wound or what have you, Vahn can release portions of his blackened flame* out through his 'human shell'. Of course, releasing too much will completely erode his human form and completely release his true nature.
*The flames also seem to pack more physical force and produce a concussive effect not seen with normal fire. He has been seen to even destroy solid projectiles thrown at him using his enhanced flames. Vahn has been shown to intensify this effect by charging up his flame before releasing it, but putting a greater strain on his own body as consequence. Limited of course by how much "blood" the user is willing to sacrifice.
Monster Within While he can appear almost identical to his former living body, Vahn is not who he was anymore. He has been cast him back into the world of the living , clinging to the tatters of former humanity as a living extension of the black flame within him. As such, the body that he uses to interact with the real world is no more than a magical construct, a manifestation of his mind trying to come to grips with his new state of being, using his familiar old body as a means to try to hold onto the remnants of the person he was. In times when he must strip away this disguise, Vahn reveals his true form...
When in his natural state, Vahn is made up of blistering black flames. Able to control every aspect of himself, Vahn can fashion these flames into a facsimile of a human shape with the help of the Eye of Efreet, the Fang of Efreet and Greaves of Efreet, often creating a constructed skeletal form of semi-harded magma and volcanic glass with which to wrap his flaming essence around. This terrifying vissage is something Vahn desperately keeps hidden, fearing his own destructive impulses and urges when he allows his humanity to slip away. His flame is the great devourer, it has always existed to consume and destroy, giving into the impulses of true state is simply too dangerous.
"He will fill you with a burning rage, amplifying your own anger until it consumes you entirely." - Walter, Guldor
APPEARANCE Hair Color: Raven Black Eye Color: Sickly Yellow Height: 5'9 Weight: 185 Build/Complexion: His form is slender but still well built with sinewy, toned muscle, and his complexion is heavily tanned from the heat of the sun. Description: With a focus on speed and endurance over brawn, he is a seemingly wiry fellow with the build of a fighter in his prime. Composed of yellowed eyes that once were bright, (which are now dulled), dark hair that has been allowed to grow nearly to his shoulders and showing no signs of the flamboyant coloration he was apt to wear, an angular face with raised cheekbones, a piercing gaze, and a strong jaw now bearing the mantle of facial hair, he maintains that rugged and loud-mouthed charm, more than capable of matching up to the stories told about him. However he is indeed a serious man, lending an air of mystery to his noble countenance, and his once lively yellowed eyes seem to carry an echo of sadness from his past.
He still bears the most prominent and notable feature upon his body- the scar of a blade's tip having cut across and between his eyes- which has long since healed into a jagged reminder.
PERSONALITY Likes: Dislikes: Fears: Persona: Possessing a dry sense of humor and a sarcastic wit he is rather loud spoken, usually hiding his intentions and feelings behind a wall of anger and cynicism. As such, he is extremely difficult to get close too, usually projecting a swaggering, generally rude, demeanor to the world, masking the caring, soft-spoken man lurking beneath the surface. He is pragmatic and passionate, his past experiences calling for dedication to the greater good, even when it must be purchased with a price.
The duality of his nature has led him to push towards the point of being reckless, as though he may find the means to balance himself through pursuing a new threat at every turn. He will stand alone against the darkness without flinching, without a care towards the very real possibility of his own death, unshakable in his desire to defy the destructive nature that boils within him, and utterly prepared to go to any length to beat back the darkness approaching…
He is the man trapped in the present, finally free from the clutches of his past, yet unable to find solace in the future. Having thrown everything away in the pursuit of vengeance for what could have been, he is no longer sure what he has become, and thus must face an uncertain future.
Because of this, he squanders what time remains, straying perilously close to destruction along the way. Until he realizes this and finds some semblance of balance between his dual natures then he will forever remain the battle weary wanderer only spoke of in tall tales, and possibly destroy himself in the process.
BACKGROUND Considering the man in question, it is no wonder that his situation has become even more complicated. While it is true that the greatest burden he has had to bear these past years is now gone (that being the threat his brother, Victor posed), it has left an all together new problem in its wake. Vahn had matured greatly in the years since his destiny was twisted by Mari, but now that Mari herself is gone his life is one again thrown into turmoil.
Vahn has fought to defy fate for so long that even now, consumed by his very flame, he remains a man obsessed with a call to action; the struggle to defy his changed nature burns almost white hot within his breast. He is a lost man, caught up in the great sweeping flow of the blackness that compels him to action, on a collision course with a catastrophic breakdown. He can feel the impending doom like a great starving beast, threatening to devour him entirely.
Where once he was cursed, in the form of the remnant of the flame avatar once bound within him, there is now a monster of a different nature. Before, he had a name to blame in the form of his brother, Victor, yet now the monster is himself- his own drastically changed nature. In dying to remove the warped influence of his brother, dragging the mass of arcane power that had been released into death with him, Vahn was returned to the world of the living as something that should never have been.
With the mass of dark flame within his soul reaching fever point, Vahn was 'shattered', the remnants of his memories and emotions shocked back into the world of the living with no body to take hold of, thus his fragile conscious took refuge in the only available medium, the blackened flames that had once roiled within his body.
Now a being of pure elemental flame, Vahn has become an fledgling avatar himself. However flame is destructive, seeking to consume and devour all that surrounds it. With the remnants of his living conscious and thoughts under siege by his new base instincts as a construct of flame, Vahn's sanity was at risk even as he was reborn into this world.
Vahn begins a perilous journey to find solace with his new state of being, or risk becoming the very force of destruction that he has so hated all this time. Complicated, does not even being to describe it.
Yet this is no time for studied self reflection. There is work to be done, and he has his life to preserving the life of the woman he loves. He must yet find a way to reunite her very essence with the body that was taken from her, in the form of the demon Ra'Kar. His volatile nature and the skills carried over from his past life can still serve him well, even if he is no longer a man of flesh and blood. With a nearly infinite connection to the very essence of flame, and powers beyond even his own depth and gauge of understanding Vahn has yet to fully understand the scope of things to come...
