Adventures in Insanity
Chapter 4: Regret
After a couple days of traveling, they finally made it to a town. It had turned night quickly, so Shark rented out rooms in a hotel. “So… who is rooming with who…?” Lunei asked as they mad their way towards the two rooms they had rented. They all suddenly went silent and thought. Pohkii was the first to break the silence. “I’ll room with Lunei-chan!” she said, trotting over to Lunei’s side. Lion seemed to twitch a bit at the thought of rooming with Shark, then sighed. He knew that rooming with Lunei would make her uncomfortable so he decided that he would have to put up with it. Lunei was happy to room with Pohkii, hut she started to worry once she saw Lion’s expression. Shark nodded. “Fine. Come on, cat…” he grumbled, walking off to their room. Lion’s ears twitched angrily and he followed after Shark, mumbling something under his breath. “Come on, Lunei-chan” Pohkii said, tugging on her arm. “Uh… okay…” she murmured quietly and followed after Pohkii. “Hey, Lunei-chan, is something wrong?” Pohkii asked suddenly once thy got to the room. “Huh? Wha?” Lunei blinked, looking at Pohkii. “Where did that come from?” Pohkii shrugged. “Well, you just looked like something was bothering you…” “I agree…” Sadie purred from on top of Lunei’s head. “You haven’t been eating much… and you’ve been looking like something’s on your mind…” Lunei paused. “Well… I…” she shook her head. “I just realized that if I do get out of insanity… well…. I can’t remember where I was before I came here…” she murmured. “And… I feel bad about leaving here… You guys are my friends… I don’t want to just leave…” Sadie blinked, as did Pohkii. “Why do you feel bad about it…?” Pohkii asked. “Well… I just don’t want to leave you guys…” Lunei said. “What if I never see you guys again…? Pohkii blinked, then smiled. “That’d never happen.” She said confidently. “And if id did, we would never forget about each other.” Lunei blinked a bit, then smiled happily. “Yeah, that’s true…” she said, nodding in agreement. Sadie purred, hopping off of Lunei’s head and landed in her lap, curling up and falling asleep, making Lunei smile. “Lunei-chaaaaan!!” Lion cried as he burst into the room and hopped up on the bed that Pohkii and Lunei were sitting on, looking at Lunei with big eyes. “You don’t have to find the exit to Insanity, do you??” he asked. Shark growled, following Lion in. “Can’t you learn how to knock on a door, stupid cat…” Lion ignored Shark’s comment and just stared at Lunei, waiting for an answer. Lunei blushed faintly, then finally spoke. “Well, I would like to stay here… but…” she let her voice trail off. “But…?” Lion pressed. “Well…” Lunei murmured hesitantly. “I just… can’t help but wonder… is there anybody waiting for me when I get back to… wherever I came from…” Lion nodded. “Well… alright…” he said. “But you will come back, right?” Lunei smiled faintly and nodded. “Of course.” Lion looked down for a moment, then back up at her. “Promise…?” Lunei grinned and gave him a hug. “Promise…” “Uh, if you’re done with your corny love scene, we’re gonna explore the town before it gets too late…” Shark grumbled. Lunei blushed. “Oh yeah…” she murmured. “Sorry…” Pohkii giggled while Lion sat there blushing. Shark rolled his eyes and headed out of the Inn, followed by the others. As they wandered around town, Lunei didn’t really seem like she was enjoying it so much. “Um, I’m gonna go look around in the forest and explore… I’ll meet up with you guys later…’ Lunei said, then headed off before anyone could protest. Pohkii frowned. “Lunei’s been acting strange…” she murmured. “Has she?” Shark asked. “I didn’t notice…” Lion stood there silently for a couple moments then quickly headed in the direction that Lunei went without saying a word. Pohkii blinked curiously, then looked up at Shark. “Should we follow them…?” she asked. Shark shrugged. “They’ll be fine…” he grumbled, blowing smoke from his cigarette past his lips. “If they’re in trouble, they’d call for help… or somethin’…” Pohkii pouted “Okay, how about this: why don’t you cut back on those cigarettes? You’re turning our breathing air white!” she scolded. Shark rolled his eyes. “You’ll live… the most that could happen is that I would set something on fire!” he then changed the subject. “Come on, let’s get something to eat… I’m starving…” Pohkii growled. “Screw you if you think I’m paying…” she muttered as they headed off to the café.
Lunei was wandering through the forest quietly, sighing to herself. “What is that strange feeling?” she asked herself. “Could it be—“ Suddenly, the surrounding forest disappeared and she was just standing in blank space. “What the hell? Where did everything go?” she asked, not really expecting an answer. “Hello?! Is anyone there?!” Once she established that she was the only one there, she just sighed and stared down at her feet, clenching her fists. “This is so weird… Everything’s gone…” she murmured. Lunei felt something touch her arm and she screamed jumping away from whatever touched her and looked at the being. It was a boy at the age of 10 or 11 that had brown hair that was almost down to his shoulders and had brown eyes. “Hi Lizzy!” he said happily. Lunei stared at him in shock. “Ben…? Is… that really you…?” she asked softly. The boy smiled happily. “Hey sis. Long time no see, huh?” he said, grinning. Lunei was speechless. “But… that can’t be… Ben… you’re dead, aren’t you…?” Ben’s smile faded. “Yeah…” he murmured before he quickly ran off into the black space. “Wait! Ben, come back!!” she called after him, then followed. Soon the blankness turned into a street. They had been standing in a park next to a street. “Ben! Mom said you’re not supposed to play in the street!” she yelled. “BEN!!” Suddenly a car flew past her and rammed right into Ben, sending him flying. Blood sprayed against her face as she stood there in shock. Before she knew it, her mother was there. “Why weren’t you watching him?!?” she screamed. “He’s dead now because of you! It’s all your fault! You little witch! My baby is dead and it’s all your fault!!” Lunei’s eyes welled up with tears and she started to back away, afraid. The scene then flashed to the park where she and Ben sat on a pair of swings. “Yeah… mom was pretty mad, wasn’t she…?” Ben asked. Lunei stared down at her feet quietly. “ ‘Pretty mad’ is an understatement.” She murmured. “Is that why you used this…?” he asked, holding up a switchblade that had rusty bloodstains on it. Lunei glanced at the blade for a moment, then looked down again. “Yeah…” she admitted. “But I couldn’t even do that right…” She continued. “I mean, I’m still alive, aren’t I…?” Ben was silent for a couple moments before he spoke again. “I dunno… are you?” he asked. Lunei blinked and looked at Ben in confusion, but then looked back down at her feet. After awhile of silence, Ben spoke up again. “Lizzy, it’s okay… Mom may have been mad, but I’m not…” she murmured. “You’re not?” she asked, sounding surprised. “Of course no! You’re my sister!” he said, nodding. “I know you would never hurt me! It’s not your fault…” Suddenly, Ben hugged onto Lunei tightly. “Lizzy, don’t go away again! I don’t wanna me alone!” he cried. Lunei looked down at Ben sadly. “I won’t… I won’t go anywhere…” she said softly.
LUNEI!!!
Lunei’s head snapped upward and she looked around. “Ben, what did you call me?” she asked. “Lizzy…” Ben replied with a confused look. “But I heard someone call “Lunei”…” she said. “Why would I call you that…?” Ben asked, laughing nervously. “Well… I don’t think you would… but I know some people who would…” she murmured, stepping away from Ben. Ben’s eyes went wide. “What…? No… No! You’re leaving again, aren’t you?!” he yelled. “You can’t go! Please Lizzy, I’m so lonely! Don’t leave me here alone!” he cried. Lunei looked down. “I’m sorry… but some people need me too…” she said. “So… I…” “You’re wrong!” Ben interrupted. “You’re just denying the truth! You’re the one that needs them!” Lunei smiled sadly and looked away. “I guess… maybe you’re right…” she said quietly.
LUNEI!!!
“Lunei! Lunei, wake up!” Lion cried, shaking her and trying to revive the soaked wolf demon. Lunei’s eyes snapped open and she sat up, coughing heavily to get water out of her lungs. “Lunei! You’re alive!” he said with relief, hugging her tightly. Lunei blushed a bit. “I-I’m fine… why am I all wet??” she asked. “You were drowning…” Lion whispered after a long pause. “No I wasn’t…” “Yeah you were…” “Dude, I so was not…” “Yes, you so were…” Lunei sighed and looked away. “I’m sorry… I thought I was with my brother…” she murmured. Lion blinked. “Your brother?” he asked quietly. “What happened to him?” It was obvious that he knew something bad had happened to him. Lunei kept looking down at her lap. “He died in a traffic accident while I was watching him…” she said softly. Lion looked shocked for a moment before he took his mask off, put it to the side, then wrapped his arms around her pulling her close into his chest. “I’m so sorry, Lunei…” he said quietly, pecking her forehead. Lunei blushed, looking up at Lion for a moment before tears welled up in her eyes and she buried her head into his chest. Lion held her close, petting her hair. “It’ll be alright, Lunei-chan…” he said softly. Once Lunei had calmed down, she and Lion sat together in silence, Lion keeping Lunei close and petting her hair gently. “Are you feeling better…?” Lion asked. Lunei nodded a bit. “Yeah… I think so…” Lion smiled, pecking her cheek before he stood up, helping Lunei stand as well. “Come on. We should head back.” He said with a smile. “While heading over there, tell me about yourself and I’ll tell you about myself.” Lunei smiled a bit and nodded. “Okay. I’d like that…”
When they got back to the town, Lion and Lunei knew a lot about each other. They knew each other’s favorite color, favorite animals, what they did as a child, what childhood games they liked, etc, etc. “There you guys are!” Pohkii said, running over to them. Lunei smiled a bit. “Yeah… sorry we took so long to get back…” she said quietly. Shark snorted. “Whatever. Can we go home?” Pohkii pouted. “But I wanna look at the shop over there!” she whined. Shark sighed. “Fine…” he murmured. Pohkii smiled, pleased with Shark’s cooperation, then headed towards the shop. Lion laughed and followed after them. Lunei watched them for a couple moments, then smiled. These people… my friends… my family… she thought before she closed her eyes and fell to the ground, getting sucked into darkness.
