Everything around her was filled with a bright white light. She was standing up. She felt no more pain. She was dressed in a soft white gown. She didn’t know where she was or what was going on. She looked around and saw Richard. He was dressed in a white suit and standing not but a few feet in front of her. “Kit,” said Richard. “Richie!” yelled Kit, and she tried to step towards him. “Stay there.” “Huh?” “Trust me.” She stood still. “I don’t understand.” “Kit, you shouldn’t have done what you did.” “I had to.” “No, you didn’t.” “He killed you.” “So?” “Richie, I-.” “I understand.” “Am I dead?” “Not, yet.” “That’s good.” “Yes, it is. You should be more careful.” “I know.” “You have to wake up now.” “Oh?” “Close your eyes.” “Why?” “Just close them.” She closed her eyes.
When she opened her eyes again everything was still white, just not as white. There was some red and she had a vague suspicion that it was blood and it was hers. She was in pain. She hadn’t been in pain a second ago but she was now. She groaned and looked around her. She was in a bed and in the Goldman and Trent infirmary. She felt kind of groggy; she was definitely on some kind of medication. She tried to remember what had happened. She remembered the mission, her team, her plan. There was Nathan; she’d definitely killed him. Then she remembered Richard. “Richie?” asked Kit. “KIT!” yelled someone. She looked and saw Leon and Sam and the others. “What did you just say?” asked Doc. “Huh?” asked Kit, “What happened?” “‘What happened’? ‘What happened’!” yelled Doc, “How dare you ask me that!?” “Huh?” “You can’t ask me what happened! Not when I’ve been sitting here for the past few days wondering if you’re going to be okay or not and wanting simply to know what happened on that damn mission.” “Right, the mission,” said Kit cautiously and she turned to look at her new team, “How long have I been out?” “Only a few days,” said Sam. “Perfect.” “‘Perfect’! Do you have any idea about the extent of your injuries?” “No, but I have a feeling that I’m about to get a lecture on it.” “A ‘lecture’! You’re getting annoyed about a ‘lecture’! You deserve a lot more than a ‘lecture’. Three broken ribs, one of which punched straight through your chest. Both of your legs have compound fractures, dislocated shoulders, broken arms, chipped teeth, broken jaw, cracked skull, smashed fingers, broken wrist and ankle.” “Sweet,” said Kit. “‘SWEET’! That’s just the stuff you did to your bones. Cuts and bruises that are anything but minor. You’ve been stabbed repeated, obviously electrocuted at well. There was internal bleeding. You punctured a lung,” “Is that all?” “‘IS THAT ALL’!?” Doc was practically fuming. “What?” “‘Is that all’? All of this is on top of your previous wounds.” “‘Previous wounds’?” asked Kyle. “I should’ve never cleared you for active duty. Not after you got shot.” “SHOT!?” asked Leon. “That’s right, this psycho of a team leader that you all have went into that damn mission one week after being shot three times in the stomach.” “You make it sound like I did something crazy.” “You did do something crazy!” “You were shot three times?” asked Leon. “It’s a long story, it happened on my last mission, I don’t want to talk about it.” “Okay.” “So,” said Kit and she looked at the doctor, “When can I go home?” He just gawked at her. “Kit Thompson! You-.” “I love that it’s so easy for me to push your buttons.” “I hate you,” said Doc D and he walked out of the room. “You were shot?” asked Leon. “Of course I was, keep up.” “I don’t understand exactly what happened on our mission,” said Sam, “And what exactly was our mission?” “Oh, that’s a long, long story.” “Are you going to tell it to us?” “Eh.” “Is that a yes or a no?” “Oh, I’ll tell you some things.” They stopped and looked at her. “Well?” asked Sam. “Billy,” said Kit, “The bomb was specifically designed so you’d have to drop it. The crate was also filled with weights. But even despite that you refused to let go of the damn thing until I cast a spell to make you.” “Seriously?” asked Billy in shock. “Seriously.” Jimmy patted him on the back. “Way to go Billy.” “Why’d I have to drop the bomb?” “To give away our position of course.” “Huh?” “The mission was to get Nathaniel out the game.” “Huh?” “We recently found one of his outposts. But Nathaniel never goes to the outposts unless there’s something there for him. So to draw him out we needed to put something in the outpost that he would want enough to come get directly.” “And what do we put there?” “Me.” “Huh?” “If Nathaniel ever got wind of me he’d come rushing.” “Why?” “In case you couldn’t tell Nathaniel and I knew each other.” “So?” “I might have killed his brother.” “WHAT?” “Eh. Long story.” “So what we you saying?” “Our mission was to draw him out. I decided that the best thing to do was to let myself get tortured and not break in such a spectacular way that Nathaniel would have to come and see if it was me.” “Why would he know it was you?” “How many twelve year old girls do you know that fit my physical description and could do what I did? I broke the man who was trying to break me.” “Good point.” “So he’d come and check it out. Once there all we had to do was wait for the back up team to arrive and starting bombing the s**t out of the outpost. That was the sign that we ready to move to the next phase.” “Which was?” “Escape.” “Right. Anything else you want to tell us? I mean, why keep us in the dark?” “I thought it was obvious. Your reactions of a botched mission were perfect. You couldn’t fake that. Jimmy’s was the best. Which was probably why you tortured to. How are you by the way?” “Fine, better than you. The healing spells went to immediately. I’m all patched up.” “Lucky you. And I am sorry. I didn’t think he was going to do that. I assumed he was going to be so preoccupied with me he’d forget about all of you. So you know sorry.” “Don’t worry. It’s not like it was the first time I was tortured.” “Although I am surprised that none you of figured it out. Especially John. I wasn’t really being all sneaky about it.” They turned at John. “Why John?” “Well he is a telepath and he peered lightly inside my head a couple of times. Plus I know he saw me pop at least one pain pill into my mouth.” “You were taking pills?” “Of course, what do you think I am? Crazy?” “That would be a yes.” “And I know that John caught me slapping on the pop-cuffs.” “Pop-cuffs?” “They react to blood and explode.” She pulled up her blank and revealed her scorched ankle. They stared at it. “That’s how you busted out of your chains!” “Yep.” “Man,” said Leon, “You pulled some amazing moves.” “Thanks. So did I past you test?” They froze. “You knew about that?” asked Sam. “Yeah.” “How?” “I didn’t forget my folder. I purposefully left my folder out in the hall so I could pretend to go get it and then listen to your conversation.” “You are a very evil person.” “I know.” “So what are you going to do?” asked Billy. “Don’t worry. Revenge is a dish best served cold.” She smiled at them. “That is creepy,” said Sam. “We’ll just leave you to it, then, shall we?” asked Leon. They filed out of the room as fast as they could because Kit was making them extremely uncomfortable. Once they were gone she smiled and snapped her fingers. She heard screaming in the halls and they all rushed back inside. This time all eleven of them were wearing bright pink tutus on top even brighter pink spandex leotards. The outfits were complete with tiny, glittery fairy wings. Kit burst into maniacal laughter when she saw their faces. “KIT!” yelled all of them. “Who am I kidding? Revenge is totally better hot.” She had the widest smile. “So much evil, in such a small person,” said Sam. “Kit, change us back,” said Leon. “You can’t order me around. I’m in charge.” “What are you going to do?” “Oh, I’m going to change back, eventually.” “What are you going to do first?” Kit picked her cell phone off the table. “First, I’m going to snap a photo.” Before they could stop her she took a picture with her phone to their utter embarrassment. “KIT!!” “Now will you change us back?” asked Jimmy. “I might as well.” She waved her hand over them and the tutus were replaced by their normal clothes. “I hate you,” said Billy. “This team might just work out after all.” “Huh?” asked Sam. “Nothing. Go home, rest up for our next mission.” “When is that going to be?” asked Leon. “I don’t know yet, you honestly think I’ve seen Steve? I’m probably in trouble. Eh, whatever,” said Kit with a smile, “Now you may leave.” She gestured to the door as Doc came back in. “Out, the lot of you,” said Doc as they obeyed, “One of these days you’re going to get yourself killed. You know that, Kit?” Sam was the last one to leave and he hid behind the door and listened in on their conversation. “Oh, you know just as well as I do that everyone dies eventually, the trick is learning how to live first,” said Kit. “And when exactly are you going to start living? Hopefully you can do that now that Nathan’s dead and all.” “Oh?” “Wasn’t he the last on your damn list?” “That he was.” “Doesn’t that mean you can take a break?” “After I crack his equation.” “You just jump from one obsession to the next, don’t you?” “Pretty much.” “I hate you.” “I know.” “What was that little rhyme that Richie made up about you?” “A fallen angel destined to fly, broken and crazy but too strong to cry.” “He was right.” “He always was.”
