VALE -- A Fred T. Foard student died in a single-vehicle wreck Thursday.
Donald Tyler Howton, 16, of Hickory, died as a result of injuries sustained in the traffic crash. Howton was a junior at Foard.
Counseling teams were on campus Friday to speak with students and staff, said Carleen Crawford, Catawba County Schools’ public information officer. There will be ongoing opportunities for students throughout the next few weeks to speak with counselors. Staff members were asked to try to maintain as much normalcy as possible, Crawford said.
Howton was the passenger in the vehicle. The make and model were not released. The driver was fellow Foard student Ryan Hoyle. Hoyle is in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, according to hospital officials.
The wreck happened around 6:45 p.m. Thursday on Zur Leonard Road in Lincoln County. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a culvert and overturned, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The wreck report has not been turned in. Officials have not disclosed if the teens were wearing seat belts or how fast the vehicle was traveling.
The crash remains under investigation.
