You can't tell from the pictures, but they were actually slightly pink. The batter was a beautiful rosey color but when it fried, it turned golden brown all except the edges. This is probably partly because I used half whole wheat flour and lots of brown sugar.
Last year I did french toast with a heart cut out of the middle (with a cookie cutter) and the heart hole filled with an egg, but shaping these guys was so fun I'm already plotting and planning to attempt clovers for St. Patrick's Day *laughs*
