Right now, in history class, we're learning about the Vietnam War. Well of course we've all heard of it, so no one is paying much attention to the notes or what are teacher is talking about. At least not till we get to the end, and Ms. Merryman shows us a video from Youtube. It has clips from various movies on Vietnam, like We Were Soldiers and Full Metal Jacket. It has music, and it has facts about the war and the consequences. It's a heart wrenching video, with scenes that, while they may have been exaggerated, are not far from the truth. The whole thing is put together in such a way that I couldn't help but cry. And heres the thing... people were laughing. "hey, look at that." They say as a helicopter crashes, completely ignoring the fact that it's crashing because theirs a dead soldier in front with blood on the windshield. It makes me want to scream at them. "show some respect, dammit! So the video ends, and as I'm moving my hands back into my line of sight, fore one horrifying moment, it looks their covered in blood. It takes me a minuet to realize that its just my neon orange nail polish, but it really did startle me.
So the whole point of this story is that I show the video to my dad. And then he tells me something that changes my whole prospective on the War. The War right now. When we pulled out of Vietnam, we left completely. We wouldn't even help the people we left behind, our allies. So the communists invade, and many of the people we left behind are sent to 'reeducations camps'. I think we all know what the really means. And that got me thinking. Up till now, I wanted the war in Iraq to just end, to bring back are troops. But now I know that it isn't that easy, can't be that easy. I don't think we should have invaded, but now were their, and if we just leave, we'll be doing something horrible. We'll be abandoning the people who trust us and support us. I'm not the most knowledgeable person about the wars going on, but if I'm remembering right, we have at least two 'wars' going on. We shouldn't have gotten involved in the first place, but now were there, and we cant just leave.
