Alicia silently grinned to herself about the little clearing she had found. The children had practically lived outside in the Labyrinth for the last couple months. It was difficult to find somewhere no one else had found. The little clearing had a miniature pond with a white stone bench beside it. A young willow was working on dipping its leaves into the pond’s smooth surface.
After she sketched a light picture of the clearing onto the little map that Haku had given her to finish, she turned so she could watch the willow’s leaves shimmer in the warm breeze. You’ll get your tips into the pond soon. Just keep going. Alicia thought to the willow. With a deep sigh, she thought about the real reason she had left to go exploring; she felt left out. Kayley and her were the only royals in the palace that couldn’t do magic. The older three had helped Jareth today with a new animal using their magic and all Alicia could do was watch. She hated that. She wanted to be able to use her magic to help.
A smile tried to creep onto Alicia’s lips when another gentle breeze flowed through the clearing and warmed her cool skin. She laid down, only taking up half the stone bench. She stared glassy eyed at the clouds that lazily floated above. Another breeze flowed through pulling at her hair but this time it was a little different. The slight sent of freshly turned earth and rose petals. Alicia propped herself up on her elbow to get a better smell of the air. Then she could feel the tips of her hair being played with. When she looked to her side to see Howl who was finger brushing her hair sitting on the other half of the bench.
“What’s wrong, Alicia?” He asked, his head slightly tilted to the side. Her ‘nothing’ answer didn’t satisfy him. He looked lovingly into her eyes. “I understand that you want your powers. I went through the same thing, maybe worse… Haku got his powers before I did. My powers were right on time but Haku got his a year early. You can only imagine I was after that happened.” Alicia smiled. “You will have your powers before you realize it. Did you notice you only have a few months before your birthday. You are very likely to get you powers then. Just be patient my sweet little sister.” He leaned forward and placed a kiss on Alicia’s forehead.
Alicia simply smiled up at him and rested her head on his shoulder while he stroked her hair.
When she finally felt better, the two walked back to the palace; Howl leading her with his arm around her shoulders and keeping her inside his jacket to protect her against the cooling evening air.
