Router Trouble! ...Or User Error. |

It's the evening now, but yesterday, I spent a lot of time experimenting with the new router, a D-Link DIR-655. It is also known as an Xtreme N Gigabit Router. That router was to replace the Linksys WRT54G one from a little while ago.
It all started when Mom came in with bags of stuff, as usual. I looked in one of them and saw the router and two desktop wireless-N network cards. I was like, "Cool!" and such.
About two hours later, I was in my sister's room. I opened the box that contained the router and took it out. It was a bright white router with a black stripe around the center when faced horizontally. I was ecstatic. There was plastic ALL OVER the router, so I removed it and plugged it in to see how it would light up.
I planned to install it later, so I unplugged it and set it on the TV tray next to me. I then grabbed one of the desktop wireless-N network cards and opened it to see what it looked like. It was just a PCI card with antennas. razz Anyway, I took that and the CD to the basement to install it, but had to remove the PCI modem from the Dimension 8200 as a compromise. Of course it was successful. 3nodding
I went back to my sister's room and browsed around Gaia for a few hours, where I gave a practically TL;DR response to a dev regarding an inventory bug. sweatdrop
Some point later, after Mom left for work, I told sis that I was switching routers again, and she complied.
After some more router setting changes, everything was good to go... on the wireless side, and I always wondered why it asked me to reboot every time I hit 'Save Settings', and when I did, it disconnected from the Internet and reconnect, which also interfered with AmiSaphLinux, the personal website server. All that time (30 minutes), and it was a bad network cord. xp
Also, I forgot one simple change. Remember the router reconnect mode options: Always On, On Demand, and sometimes Manual? The setting chosen was On Demand. Our option was and always will be Always On. That was the cause of the required reboot prompts. They don't occur anymore, though. Thank goodness. Now I can port forward more ports to one computer!
I like this particular router because of the multiple port forwarding feature, something I don't usually see on routers. Also, there is a website blocker. Not useful to me, but will be fun to mess with. There are lots of other features, especially the virtual server setting.
Now that the problem is resolved, this journal entry will end. Later.
And yeah, the problem was due to user error, or PEBKAC. rolleyes
